Why did you youngsters have to rain on my parade with these 5K times? I can't compete with those numbers! Oh, well...
I ran my very first 5K on Saturday and LOVED IT. My goal was to do it under 22 minutes. I ran a 21:58 and got 2nd in my age division---24th out of 313 overall.
I started running on March 10th, going out for 3-mile runs about 3 or 4 times a week. My first run was 26:45. Three days later it was 24:30. I have progressed gradually since then, mixing in a couple 5-mile runs a week. I've twice run 7.5 miles, and plan to start pushing harder to improve my times. I might eventually start running 10Ks, but for now the 5K seems more fun. Well see.
I have a question for you Padilla bros... Is it necessary/helpful to taper before a 5K, or is that mainly for longer events like 10K or marathon? If so, what's the ideal taper for a 5K? I'm up to 16-20 miles a week, but only ran 12 last week (before the 5K) not running at all on Thursday or Friday.
I will be hitting you guys with more questions about running so get ready. I'm really enjoying it. I've tried running in the past, but always lost intrest after a week or so. The iPod and my running journal have helped keep it interesting this time around.
By the way, about the shoes, I wear the Pegasus more often than the Spiras nowadays. I still really like the Spiras, but the Pegasus seems to withstand the pounding a little better. I wore them in the 5K, but feel like I could have run it faster in the Spiras. I plan to start wearing the Spiras more often in the future.
I'm registered for another 5K this Saturday. |

Hey Ryan - good to hear that you're enjoying the running. As for tapering...it is helpful the day before or even a couple days before a race to take it easier than usual. If you're doing 3-4 miles a day, do like 1-2 miles really easy the day before your race and stretch out well. Also, it also helps to get a good pair of road racing flats for those 5k/10ks. It's a good feeling to put them on before your race since they're so light and comfortable, and they'll most likely improve your times. |

Hey Ryan:
Like my bro said...great to hear that your're enjoying the running!
As for improving your times...I have some good advice. First off, if you have the time of course, GRADUALLY increase your weekly mileage. You can do this either by increasing the miles you do each day or maybe dedicate one day as a 'long run'. Keep these runs easy and don't worry about pace, but concentrate more on how you feel, etc. You should also do some easy strides after these runs, where you run 100 yards or so at a quick pace just to stretch out the leg muscles, etc. I would also suggest dedicating maybe like 2 days out of the week as 'tempo days', where you have a set distance of around 3-4 miles and you sustain a steady pace, but not an all-out effort. You will want to time these runs and try to hit a certain pace as well. You will definitely see these tempo times improve over the weeks as your body gets used to running a steady pace over a set distance. I would definitely buy a nice pair of racing flats too...nothing makes you feel more ready for a race than putting those on before the start. Best of luck to you. |

Hey Ryan:
here are some nice Nike racing flats. Chris and I use the Zoom Marathoners since we get them for free for our team here at Virginia Tech. They are very comfortable. As you can see, as the distance of the race increases, so does the weight of the racing flat, since more cushioning is necessary. I thought you might like the Pegasus Racers (below), since they are pretty much the pegasus model made for road races.

Cool. Thanks for the advice, guys. I will follow it. It's actually not too far off of what I've been doing. It all seems pretty logical. One thing I forgot to mention is that my usual 3-mile run ends at a point about a half mile from my house. I've been finishing that distance by sprinting 70 steps with long strides, then walking 50 steps, sprint 70, walk 50, and so on.
Remember, I have a pair of these Spira Stingers. They weigh 7.5 oz. I've only run in them once. Maybe I'll run my next 5K in them.

Hoops is my first love too, Johnny. I've been fortunate to not seriously injure a knee or ankle at any point in my career. And when I play nowadays, I find myself thinking how stupid it would be suffer something like that at this stage of my life. So I decided to give up competitive hoops. I can't slash like I used to, and bangin' in the middle isn't as fun.
Like I said earlier, you can make running more interesting by 1)wearing your iPod and 2)keeping a running journal so you can compete against yourself. I record my miles, overall time, split times (by mile), avgerage per-mile time, the shoe I wear, temperature/weather, and if I feel crappy during a run, I make notes on what I ate and how I slept prior. As you could imagine, it helps me eat healthier and get to bed earlier.
This is hopefully the last of my several attempts to become a runner. I finally found a way to make it interesting. My first goal was a 22:00 5K. I did that. Now it's 21:00. I'll let you know how I do this Saturday. |

Ryan - great point with the running log/journal. Throughout our entire high school running careers, my brother and I never wrote anything down about our workouts or mileage or anything like that. However, now that we are training at a D1 collegiate level, it's a totally different story. We make sure to log every day's mileage, write down our
speed-workout splits, take note of ice bath sessions, recognize any slight aches or pains, etc....basically every detail. Although it may be tedious to record all of this, it really is worth it in the end. It's great to go back and look at certain days where you pushed yourself, or days that you just want to forget as a whole. Either way, there is no better method that can show you how much work you have actually put in over the the long seasons. |

Hey everyone:
I just wanted to share a running watch design I did today for Nike. It features a red backlight display, and in order to relate this post to footwear, I thought that maybe it would be sold with a pair of running shoes with microchip technology that would send your pace, mileage, etc to the watch for you to see.
Ryan: I would definitely use those Spira Stingers for the next race. They look and sound like they are pretty good flats.

Ryan: our team runs anywhere from 30-40 miles a week during non-race weeks but when we have a cross country race on a saturday we run only a mile on the friday before, just to keep stretched out and loose. Then we eat a big pasta dinner the night before the race. These things help ensure that we run well the next day. Its all completely preference though. Things I like to do before a race that at least make me think I'm going to run a good time are drinking alot, but not too much water, and to mentally prepare I have religiously memorized some running quotes that motivate me during races...lol.
Here's the website I get most of them from:

Ryan, man you've made me all enthousiastic for running now.. I've tried before but always gave up after a few weeks because it was too boring for my quickthinking action-addicted basketballmind.. But I have started thinking about it recently again (partly because off that chin/gut thing too, and because I'll transfer to Decathlons running/walking brand soon and I want to experience first hand the products that I work on), and I thought that music might do the trick.. to chase away the nasty thougts about the little pains in my body while running. And this running log thing is a good idea too, I'll start one too. One question though; at what time do you run? Where do you fit that in your schedule between work/family/travel? PEP |

Pep, get out there and hit the road, man. I continue to be amazed by how much I'm enjoying this.
To answer your question, some people I work with like to run early in the morning. I don't like getting up early, so I run in the evenings. My wife is a stay-home mom, and likes to cook early, so supper is usually ready when I come home. In that case I can eat, hang with the kids for an hour or so, then go for a run.
Occasionally I run right after work. I live less than a mile from work, so I can be home and dressed for a run by 5:45.
I don't have a set schedule for weekend runs, but my favorite time to run is morning, because if I don't spend myself too much, I feel more energetic the rest of the day. Today was an exception--I felt ragged after my run so I took an hour nap in my back yard hammock.
By the way, that advice Phil Padilla gave me on May 8th is playing out well. I've been increasing my miles a little. I was running 16 to 20 miles back then, but last week I ran 28 miles. A month ago I was pushing pretty hard to average a 7:30/mile pace. Now, I don't push as hard, and my last couple runs have averaged 6:55/mile. It's sort of crazy how things change without you really feeling it. I'm sure another part of the equation is that my weight has dropped from 187 to 165 pounds since I started.
This coming Saturday I'll be running the "Bison Stampede" listed above. The goal is 21:00. I've been told it's around a lake, so I don't anticipate a lot of hills. We'll see. |

As for music, my attitude has changed about that. I started off thinking I needed uptempo music that would get me pumped up. But after a while I started getting annoyed by it. Some music is actually distracting for running. Today I ran listening to Wilco's new album , Sky Blue Sky. It's a fairly mellow album from beginning to end, but I found it great for running. Wilco's my favorite band though. I'm not saying they're for everybody. I'm just saying try running to what you'd enjoy listening to any other time. Don't run to Twisa or Motorhead if you don't really like Twista or Motorhead. :) |

No, I've not used a monitor. But my resting rate is 52. I remember it reading 53 as a sophomore while playing juco hoops -- but that was a LONG time ago. I was surprised by the 52 now. It was measured by a sitdown health-o-meter thingy at the gym. Is that pretty good for someone who runs regularly? I don't really know. |

im no expert but... if the pain is in the bone or a joint stop and see a dr. if the pain is in the muscle and its just soreness then its no biggie. If you have what feels a knife being stabed into you arch try stretching out your calves. I have really high arches so i get the knife stabbing pain in my arches if im not properly streched out. to fix this i just stand on the steps outside my house one foot at a time lowering the heel of that foot as low as it will go so i feel a good stretch through my calf. hopefully this helps sarah. if pain persists though you have to see a dr. |

5K RUN REPORT (as promised):
I ran Saturday's Bison Stampede 5K in ... 20:05.78.
I almost couldn't believe my watch when I looked down. That's a 1:26 improvement over my previous best (21:31) two weeks ago.
It was a very hilly run, which I didn't expect. But most of the hills were in the first half of the race. And about 75% of the route was a gravel road and was very wet in several spots as it had rained hard in the early AM hours.
A 55 year-old man blew by me near the end. I was a quite humbled. I talked to him after the race. He's been running for 30 years. I felt better after learning that.
I wore the Spira Stingers. I love those shoes. |

Hey all,
Wanted to share a little UA running project I put together. I had it up in core but Mr. Holler made a special request for me to drop it in here for you guys. LOL I did it in about a week with some hand sketching and working illustrator versions as I went. I wanted to have a "tough" looking shoe that communicated the feel of the brand..almost like a Full Back version of a typical running shoe (or a running shoe on roids) that communicated speed and had a breathability and dual EVA impact protection story. In addition, I did some thinking about implementing their moisture wicking material into a seamless interior and doing a quilted Hex pattern to allow heat to dissipate away from the foot.
I knew I wanted to have a mostly mesh upper with some HF welded exoskeletal support overlays and an aggressive/durable toe cap. I played with overlasting the forefoot and heel with the first density of EVA to bring the shoe closer to the foot, but think this may have been a poor approach in the end. Anyways, all feedback appreciated!

Hey Tony:
Awesome project. I always enjoy seeing new running designs. To me, the shoe feels like a trail running design, especially the black/orange and black/gold colorways, and I think that's what you may have been aiming towards when you wanted to design a "tough" running shoe. I also think that the exoskeleton and durable toe cap features add to the trail/off-road aspects of the shoe. I'm liking the Under Armour choice too...different from the Nike, Adida, Asics, etc. out on the market now.

I'm not a fan of trail running shoes in general but I really like your concept and I like all the variation of design. The rendering I like the most is the first one on the left on the top sheet of six shoes. I think it has great proportions and shape and looks like something I would run in (if only it weren't black). It's a great project; I wish I had the skill to put something like that together. jason is that the medial or the lateral side of the shoe? it appears to be the lateral but when you look at the lines on the bottom of the shoe, the only way it lines up is if you are showing us the medial side. Either way id like to see what the other side of the shoe looks like, since the design ques on the out sole indicate that both sides are slightly different. Im not wild about the design but perhaps you can show us some sketches, so we can see how you arrived at this idea.

It's the lateral side. I still need to get some practice in on proportions and getting the shoe the right shape.
About the logo matching up with the outsole ur right about it being off. Though it does fit its just I've forgotten to reverse the outsole in that image. So I geuss that outsole above would be on the right shoe. My bad.

Travis and Phil~ Thanks a lot for your comments. Honestly, I was not at all trying to do anything trail related, but clearly I have hit that mark. LOL. I just wanted something that looked different for running, then I think the colors are throwing it off too. I would imagine a much luggier (is that even a word?) outsole for trail...but your perception is always correct. So trail it is!
Travis, funny you liked that top left shoe as I thought the proportions were terrible on it ( I debated even showing that one. Ha ha) and you can see the next version I changed it quite a bit based on an existing running silhouette. Amazing how views can be so different. Tanks again for the feedback!

Im just wondering, to all the guys here who work or worked on a shoe company design. Does the company ask you for a certain amount of design per month, per week or per project?
And how does your job flows?
Im just curious.

Joseph, it's different depending on who you work for. A designer might be handed 3 (or more) design briefs and one time. They might have a week to get them done or they may have 3 months or more. It really depends on what brand the designer works for, and maybe what level they've reached. At a big brand (Nike, Jordan, adidas, Converse, etc.), designers have longer to work on a shoe because more technical attention has to be given to it.
The lower the degree of technical performance for which a brand is known is usually a pretty good indicator of how much time is spent on each design. A brand which puts a low priority on technical performance and comfort is more likely to produce a larger number of designs through one designer in a shorter span of time.
It's difficult to answer your question more specifically than that because of all the variables involved. |
