does anyone know who designed it? |
Paul Erdmann (22)
| 6:33:00 PM Tuesday, March 06, 2007
Hi everybody,
here's something I finished about eight months ago. I did it in my second term at the university (I'm studying Industrial Design in Pforzheim, Germany) and it was the first design project I did, since the first term was just theory.
The theme was to design a coffeemaker for a company, we were able to choose ourselves (the actual companies had nothing to do with it). The coffeemaker was supposed to be based on a pad-system, like the Philips senseo. And since I'm a shoehead and I thought, it would be interesting, I chose Jumpman23.
So, I developed a concept for a Jumpman23-coffeemaker, including some athlete-inspired features (always having the dehydrating effect of coffee in mind). Since it would take too much space to explain all the features, I'll just mention them (for further information just ask me):
-a pad changer holding up to three pads
-a special web-service, giving you the possibility to determine the right coffee-pad to consume before going to the court through performance relevant data (age, weight, body fat,…)
-an integrated, cooled water dispenser, that’s portable and can be used as a drinking bottle
-integrated cups, that can be connected to the water dispenser and be taken along as well |
Paul Erdmann (22)
| 6:34:00 PM Tuesday, March 06, 2007
The design was mainly inspired by the Air Jordan 18, 19 and 21, so it should be clear, distinct, strong, elegant and dynamic.
I originally wanted to send the designers at Jordan a pdf-portfolio of the coffeemaker to get some feedback and hear, what they think about it, which didn’t come about, since it’s not that easy to get through to them. But now, that I know, that they and other gifted people watch, what happens on this site, maybe I’ll nevertheless get my feedback.
For further information, the pdf still exists, email me at erdpau@hs-pforzheim.de
Now, excuse the many words, here are some photos and renderings of the final design, tell me what you think. ( Sadly, the paint on the original scale model turned out to look different from what the proof looked like. The color should more be like on the renderings or like the tech flex on the 19s)

Barbu, 3D software that's simple an fast to learn does not exist, at least in terms of getting to the level at which you can render shoes, as they are quite complex forms. I've tinkered with Rhinoceros and Romans CAD, but neither of those fit what you're looking for, in my opinion. |

I agree....it is challenging to successfully model and render shoes on any 3d software programs. Personally, I just jumped in and tried a whole bunch of different things until I finally came up with a refined technique that i use for my work...but this took a good month or so to perfect. I use Rhinoceros for all of my models, and then i import those models into Maxwell for a high quality rendering. Here are some examples of my models and renderings, which are track spike concepts...hope this helps

Barbu -- I know nothing about 3D Studio Max. Like I said, my only experience is with Rhino and Romans CAD.
By the way, Roman's CAD is one of the very few 3D softwares that are designed specifically for shoe design/production. It allows very nice presentation renderings from any angle, like most 3D software, but what makes it special is that it stores all the information that is key to the factory production process. It automatically factors leather thicknesses and material textures. It's a very technical program when it comes to footwear, much moreso than Rhinoceros. |

Barbu, with all this talk I don't mean to make you think that your 3D software development skills are of great importance right now. They're not. You saw Tony Hardman's work earlier in this thread. You've seen Justin Taylor's work before too. Those guys don't know dink about 3D software (or if they do, they haven't told or shown me). But they know how to comunicate with handsketches and 2D software. The most important thing is to learn to think like a designer--problem solving through design--and to communicate your ideas clearly. Here's a GREAT example of some simple handsketching by Andreas Harlow for the design of the Nike Considered BB Low. Drag this image into your address field to blow it up for a closer look. See how well he explains things? No intense shading, no lense flares, just great linework and a little color for presentation.

I think they don't look like feet. Please excuse my bluntness. The shape and proportion is way off. Here are a couple template layouts to help you (a hi-top basketball shoe and a low runner). The 4-ups are for smaller sketching. Download and print them for tracing. You can also use a photo of an actual shoe.

Barbu, looks pretty good. One comment in general is that the front of your shoe looks to be at a steep slant. You might wanna fix that.
On a totally seperate topic, while I was examening the XX2 a while back, I noticed that every line on the shoe flows with another. I thought this was a really cool detail, and really contributes to a complete look IMO....here's an illustration...(right click, view image on PC's, drop and drop into url box on a MAC to see clearer)

"The most important thing is to learn to think like a designer--problem solving through design--and to communicate your ideas clearly."
"See how well he explains things? No intense shading, no lense flares..."
everything was very much on point there mr. holler...
everything except for the comment about the lens flares...they area very integral part of the design process; in fact in a candid roundtable discussion amongst myself, tinker, @coop, avar, DE, and link, we all pretty much agreed that lens flares were indeed a must for any design to be fully realized and insomuch also came to the conclusion that lens flare should be incorporated into everyone's daily life (the memo & newsletter is forthcoming)...
so in summary,
lens flares rule...

"ok ok, what exactly is a lens flare? i may be the only one who doesn't know."
oh no, you are not alone, there are many that are not schooled in the art of the lens flare. it is shielded from the general populace for fear that the power fall in the wrong hands, and its true definition would probably shatter one's mind without proper preparations & training (in fact it takes many lifetimes to know this true definition, many have withered from its unbearable truth)
though i can reveal that the lens flare was once a mystic occurrence that would happen sporadically in nature. it would astound and confuse all in its presence, man & beast alike; it would take man millennia to harness its power in an approximate, albeit less powerful, incarnation as a filter in photoshop...
i would say something here about the kid in the video harnessing the power of the lens flare on his defenders, but it would probably be overkill...sweet vid |

Hej you guys!
Remeber I asked you about the Zoom Lebron IV and the Gil Zero, well I was in Munich yesterday and at the kickz.com store they had both, but unfortunatly the Gil Zero not in my size, I tried the LBIV but it´s too heavy and doesn´t fit for just walking around, but I guess it is an awsome shoe for playing ball in. SO now I´m waiting cause they wll get another colorway of the Gil Zero at KICKZ in some weeks.
In the meanwhile I hooked my self up with the nice white K1X Meet The Parents, great shoe, check it out on the webside kickz.com, it´s more comfortable than the Converse All Star for sure!

that´s what I found:
The Nike Air Book is the compendium for everything AIR by Nike. You will find all various Air Models with detailed images of the respective air cushion(s) and design features.
Besides the technical aspects there is also a section with portraits of famous athletes who are closely connected with/related to Nike Air.
A true collectors item that comes with the legendary Nike Air Max 95 Air cushion.
the price is $40
I guess it would be a nice collection item

So far I think I prefer the ZK1, but seeing the shoes in my hands may change that. They need a colorway with red in it like the AS colorway ZK1. |

Rich, this book only exists in japanese version.
so i have another question : do you know this book? its called "WIN" > Welcome Into Nike
"Its a limited edition book that was only given to Nike employees."
i hesitate between the NIKE-AIR-BOOK and this WIN-book.
Can anyone help me to chose the right thing?

Hmm no idea on those books. I just went to a local Nike stor and they had some booklets, which contained pretty much everything you need to know, for free. But its probably nowhere near the information amount that can be released. BUt I think Ima pick up some kind of book too. Wow that aint cheap Christoph, but if you ask me it was worth it! I dont think the new Kobes are bad, I liked the first better, but I'll wait till its in my hand. I'd guess 135, I dont think Nikes gonna go higher or lower either. |

Anyone have any information on impact/stress points of the foot (bottom, sides, and top) for basketball players? I know that different players/positions have different points, but maybe a summarized list or by position would be great. Trying to compile some info and can't find anything in my research. Any help you guys can give would be great.
Thanks,

I just picked up that nice new jersey! I finally had to get one and honestly I love it that adidas sponsors the NBA! they have done so many nice things in the past month and certainly have the best looking yersey ever!and also the best quality, you can´t compare it with the Rbk yersey from last year and their Swingman yerseys like this one are far more detailed like the ones from Nike and RBK. All there NBA clothing is great and of course all their new shoe!

It´s amazing in my opinion, like
remember some years ago there was Champion and Nike and some had Puma like the NY Knicks ans the Kings, then there was almost just Nike and RBK, where Nike did the best job, really they had such nice shoot around shirts and that kind of stuff, I´m talking about the 2003 season and now adidas is doing the best job of all! |

craft looks nice on the adidas, for sure. i still rock the champions...i haven't actually gotten a new one from a store in a while. however, i did score a nwt champion isiah thomas road and a nwt jordan red road on ebay. that's some gold, for me at least. |

I bought this yersey from ebay out of the US, the pitty is that we in Europe only get the champion ones, so I´m not even going to start listing all the yersey I have:-) but this is the first that I´ve bought in about four years. |

i think the reason i've not bought any new ones lately is the fact that they're cut like wnba jerseys...kind of like a sleeveless. except for the nets, celts, bulls, and a few others... |

Stephen, the honest answer is that there isn't a mechanical advantage to double-lasting (or overlasting) a shoe. Some may say there is, but it's arguable at best. The fact is that you can use either overlasting or conventional lasting to build a shoe with any footbed height and with any level of lateral stability. The key element that the lasting method gives a shoe is appearance. An overlasted shoe creates an appearance of being lower to the ground, even when it might have a thicker midsole, albeit hidden, than a traditionally lasted shoe. Neither is better or worse. If it was, you'd see the big brands pick one way of doing it and stick with it. Even the Air Jordan line has gone back and forth between the two---the XX1 being overlasted, and the XX2 having an exposed midsole. It's just a design element, plain and simple. |

Towards the bottom of the page there is some info that Richard has written about Double-Lasting.
http://boards.core77.com/viewtopic.php?t=12478
There are some Cost Benefits to Double-Lasting. You can re-use existing midsole, and often the drop in shank plate. You can re-use midsole/shank with conventional lasting as well although the new uppers on a double-lasted shoe will look more like a totally new shoe, rather than a new upper on a old midsole.
If you wanted to change the outsole it would add cost but less money since you are using existing midsole/ shank.. With the saved money (after the molds have been paid off) make better margin (make more money) and you can add more money to the upper materials/ details.
Also believe that with Double lasting is that you dont get as good of a fit. because material is wrapping around the midsole, and not so much around the foot. In some cases too can add more glue and material making it more heavy. (in many ways each shoe is different can be designed/ constructed many ways so can be more or less functional).
good to see you guys questioning constructions,
be easy
Mm

MM, great info man. Its brings Double-lasting into a whole new light for me..
To: Mark, Ryan, and/or anyone that can answer.
Speaking of cost benefits. Is there a cost effective way to have a clear outsole and an "air" unit on a shoe like the Starbury's and maintain the same price point?

just some shoes in my collection. The Zoom Kobe 1's are probably the most comfortable shoes i've worn in a while. i just couldnt resist ordering a 3rd pair - the 'black mamba' all-black colourway...should get those in the mail sometime this week. the Lebron's are great too, but the foamposite upper is still fairly stiff so they hurt my feet when worn for too long.

Apparently PPR, a company that owns Gucci and Yves St Laurent, have put a bid for Puma. In the article, analysts speculate Nike might make a bid for it. This would be crazy if Nike bought Puma. But please discuss.

I just came up with an idea. I dont recall anyone ever mentioning this on the site. But how about we have regional KG summits? Obviously we all live in different states and some of us are either too married or too young to fly across the country to meet up, but we might be able to pull off like a KG Los Angeles, Summit - New York Summit, etc etc.. maybe organize it at some park on a saturday... have a BBQ, throw down a few cold ones ( those that are 21+ )and just talk about designs or anything in general. We could take a few pics and post them here for the other "regions" to share. |

These are the Gil Zero Vegas Edition, from Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards!
I got them on ebay from the US well acutally from Thailand and I had to pay a damn lot for custom office, which I didn´t know first!!
retail price for this edition is $200 US Dollars!
I got them cheaper on ebay, but since I had to pay $87 Bucks for the damn custom shit, these are the most expensive shoes I´ve ever bought! |
