Thanks so much everyone. Thank you for supporting my work and giving me the critiques I needed to improve. It really means alot to me that my fellow peers support me as much as you do. I can't say enough about what this community has done for me and others. Thanks KG.
I look forward to providing you with the best possible product, as do the rest of the people here at Jordan. |

Congradulations Justin, have fun and get all of the celebrating out of your system because I need you to make MJ and everyone on this board proud!
Now, you don't want to dissapoint MJ, do you?
To the rest of you Dreams really do come true. It took me 11 years to get to Nike and I work just as hard today if, not harder as I did to get here.
It only took Justin 1 year and I think I saw Justin's work here for the first time and I could tell he was going to be special because he had natural ablity and a good thought process. No fancy renderings just solid well proportioned designs. If you guys learn anything from him study his work. His work will tell you everything you need to know about him and that is also true for you as well.
When you are designing remember your work should and will always speak for you.
Tony and Ryan's work spoke for them and now they are getting paid to design shoes. The are even a few others that have been on here and are now Pro's.
Dreams really do come true and the same way I saw something special in Tony, Ryan and Justin I see something special in a few others on this board. Not that I am the final judge when it comes to talent but I was just like all of you on this board 18 years ago wishing someone would help me but that help never came so, I worked hard until I got my chance and when I got my chance I had to work even harder to keep it. Today, I have to work even harder because of all of you young bucks. You guys are so much more talented and to be honest with you all, you inspire me, to be better.
Sorry for the long post but keep up the good work everyone and I will reach out to some of you other special people soon.
D
PS:Justin, get back to work!

Someone help me out, I got too questions, first off the new Ronaldinho shoe, I was checkin it out recently, anybody have any idea what's put into the tongue, or what's it made out of so it holds in place over the lacebed?? Secound off, I was readin' an article on car tires, and how the "ribs" or "lines", not sure what you call them are there so the water on the road has channels to flow through so the rest of the tire keeps in contact with the road. And the reaon they use plain tires for race cars when not rainin' is because it provides a lot more traction. So the question would be why dont they just make indoor bball shoes with simple outsoles without a herrinbone pattern, since there aint any water inside??? ANyone have any ideas?? |

Johnny : The R10's tongue seems to be made of super supple leather with no foam inside, and maybe there is a lace loop inside to hold it in place.
Some ideas for cars :
Cars have approximately always the same contact zone with the ground & go in the same direction. With a bball shoe, your foot flex, the contact zone always changes, sometimes you go right forward, and suddenly you go left or right.
The herringbone pattern allows rubber to flex, to be deformed, in order to stay in contact with the ground a bit longer during a movement. If the rubber is plain, the whole sole needs to be deformed to have a longer contact with the ground, so in this case you need a super soft rubber, but less durable.
So, up to you all to adjust these ideas, and add some others to get the answer. |

Johnny there is velcro under the tongue so that it stays on the shoe, Ronaldinho himself even has a rubber band attached to it which goes around the shoe to stay on it and it is made out of some smooth soft leather!

i would be curious to know the answer as well? though, i have to respectfully disagree with arnaud, friction is friction (traction) and the more one surface is in contact with another the more friction (traction). so it does not make sense to me that an outsole that is fragmented would have more traction (on a smooth surface) than one that is not? unless the grooves create some sort of vacuum effect (suction)? car tires have grooves so when in the rain or dirt you get more (friction) traction my guess would be that herringbone (and other variations) might be to accommodate the various surfaces one may encounter while wearing a shoe because we do not always wear our $100+ sneakers on ideal surfaces, and herringbone patterns likely provide the best traction on an array of surfaces? i think most of the grip we get when on smooth surfaces is from the properties/texture of the rubber not so much the pattern (though many vouch for herringbone being the "best performing" outsole patterns) |

I definitely know durability is a factor because in a car race, they use very soft tread less tires, but they must change them multiple times during a race. I think while they create more friction, or ground contact initially, the return would not be so great in the long run. As for shoe, would you want to change your soles midway through a game? Could you even afford to?
I would think the tread, sometimes a herringbone pattern, allows a sole to deform and create maximum court contact, but uses a hard enough rubber to remain durable. |

Ade, I've got your answer.
But first of all, Brent nailed it in regard to racing tires. My previous job as Snap-on exposed me to many conversations about that. It's about getting maximum durability and traction simultaneously. Additionally, the soft rubber that comes off of the tire actually gets hot and sticks to the track. So it's not just rubber against asphalt; it's rubber against a combination of rubber and asphalt---even moreso as the race goes on. Sticky, sticky!
Now, as for why a herringbone or any blade-shaped tread is best for hoops, it's about concentrated weight meeting at that tiny point at the edge of the tread "blade". Even though the edges of the blades don't combine to equal as much surface contact as a flat sole would, they do come down with a much more concentrated amount of weight on their minimized points of contact. That's where your traction comes from.
Of course most of us are aware of how Jordan Brand is now recessing every other row of tread. One wears down, or compresses under exptreme weight, and you get a fresh set touching down.
You see adidas use squared off tread blades. I don't know, but my theory on that is that when the blades bend with lateral friction, you actually get the sharp edge on either side functioning much like traditional herringbone tread, sort of like this...

Maybe Mark Miner can check in and confirm if I'm wrong or right. |

Ryan,
Just reading over discussion, was a long day of travel from All-Star weekend in Vegas. I was down there with Tom. Will post up some pics from the travel soon. I think adidas did a great job with teaming up with the nba and las vegas for this event. Jam session was nice to see kids playing the sport and seeing the excitement and love for the game. Couple kids there hit a half court shot to win a free xbox and nba live07 (saw one of them do it the other just heard the cheers).
On the topic of "squared off tread blades" if you had some pics or names of shoes that you are ref. I could better explain or confirm. But from my understanding the squared off tread gives you more ground contact + stability. Will get more information.
be well

ohhhh, i see...thanks ryan. i understand the sticky thing with racing, it is part of the reason they try to stay in the racing line of of the rubber previously laid, right? i think you and arnaud were actually saying the same thing, my apologies arnaud. so is it that with the herringbone (and variations) "gives" slighty and "pushes" against the force of movement? |

Actually, that element of the XX2 design is easily traceable to the F-22 Raptor. I'm sure it's not a bite on JP's design. I just thought it was notable how similar they are. The fact that JPs design is a revision of the Jordan 1 is a large part of what makes it intersting. If it was just some other Nike or another brand I don't think it would be worth mentioning. The fact is that after all that's been on the market in the history of basketball footwear, it's alomost impossible to design a shoe that doesn't resemble some elemtent of a previous design. |

i like the overall design of the XX2, but i just want to know WHY the "camo" stuff was necessary? i saw a pic of a white/red colorway without the camo and i have to say that if it dropped i would have it in a second. i realize all black would maybe be too simple but its jordan brand..and thats the best thing they came up with? in my opinion its just a visual turn off that steals the focus of an otherwise very nice shoe |

Johnny just hit on part of it. For one thing, it's original. Secondly, if it didn't make most people uneasy in a couple ways, it wouldn't work. An equally valid question, Travis, is why NOT the camo? (the "camo", by the way, is not really camo. It's the word "Jordan" repeated over and over. You could make it out better on a larger piece of the material.) I mean, guys, THAT'S AN AIR JORDAN; it's not a team shoe. Every year, I see the new one for the first time say, "WHAT?!". But then over the next few viewings I get to the point where, even if I'm still a little uncomfortable with it, I think, "Yeah, that's a freakin' Air Jordan." |

jordans are always a tough debate. on one hand, it's an air jordan, THE basketball sneaker, how can you scrutinize it? on the other hand, how can i not question it when it's got a $175 tag on it? jb is always boosting the bar higher, so mad prop(ers). unfortunately, they boost the sticker price, too...guess that's why piggy banks get broken... |

abou the herringbone structere i think one importan fact is that the herringbones need to be flexible,so they can move.while moving the dirt that gets stuck on the outsole is rubbed away.the outsole keeps it's traction.
if the outsole would be flat, you'll have a thin film of dust stuck to the rubber.you'll feel like running on an ice surface. |
