General Discussion, Vol. 2 This is where we cover a slightly wider range of topics and allow the Artist Series threads to remain focused on the respective competitions. Let's keep it related in some way to sneakers or the KG community... i.e. a new design rendering, a recent shoe purchase, a sighting of an interesting shoe, an encounter with a notable person in the sneaker world, or if you've been around here for a while, anything you've done which other KGers would find interesting.

Check it out...someone thought Sindri's rendering might be a leak of the XXIII...I will admit it's a clean rendering..I hope its ok that I burst their bubble.

yes I have and I can´t see it coming yet!
it looks just boring compared to the IV´s

10:49:00 AM Wednesday, July 04, 2007
I agree with Christoph...its just lackluster. The shape is weird, there's nothing special-looking about it, it doesn't have any return-to-classic lines like the IV. I loved the IV...still gotta get my pair but they're still available here for like $90.
4:50:00 AM Thursday, July 05, 2007
there´s a big story behing the show though, I just saw some stuff where they got their inpiration from , once you see it you understand the design better, but stillit´s not a shoe that I couldn´t wait to buy

Guys, I posted this template over on the "Running..." thread. I created this based on the layout of a basketball shoe template that Jason Mayden shared with us a couple years ago. Here are both of them. These should help you guys with your proportions. The 1-ups are for big renderings and the 4-ups are for smaller sketches.
(Johnny, judging from your sketches above, proportion is something you need to work hard on improving. These should come in handy for you. Save them to your computer and print them out. And be sure to show us your new sketches after you start using them.)
11:10:00 PM Thursday, July 05, 2007
Jason Mayden, from Jordan Brand, originally created the basketball shoe template. A few months ago I wanted one for running shoes, so I built the running shoe template based on Jason's layout.
Here's one of Jay-May's renderings (of D.E.'s design) I laid over the template just to show how closely he followed it.

My latest pick up. They kinda feel wierd on my feet, but maybe it might need some breaking in. I probably would just display it somewhere too haha. Hey Ryan, if I sent you the shoe with return postage would you sign it? :)
8:07:00 PM Tuesday, July 10, 2007
Of course I would, Rich. I'd feel very honored. Thanks for buying it. Does the shoe feel a bit too roomy in the forefoot? That was the only issue I had with them when I got mine. I suggested they fix it but I honestly don't know if they did. I added some Dr. Scholls liners under the factory liner and they felt fine. I played about 6 rec league games in them. I also thought they could've carried the ankle/heel counter padding down closer to the midfoot.

It didnt feel roomy at all. In all honesty I wasnt looking for anything techincal with the shoe, only because this is more or less more for collections sake ( I buy any shoe if they look good no matter the brand ) and more importantly to show support for all the peeps here on KG that have helped me out with tips and critiques :)
1:59:00 PM Wednesday, July 11, 2007
I like those sean John's except for the seam on the toe...seems to take away from the clean aesthetic. But I am sure I ahve seen a lot of high end dress shoes with the same application. Maybe on the white it's not as appealing.
Ryan: your shoe looks great! I need to find a nearby walmart so I can cop!

Here is my current work and first work with my new scanner. Let me introduce it for y'all. It is a Kobe conept with Zoom Air in the heel. The toe is subject to change but is now a Foamposite-inspired thing I don't really know yet I want it to be lightweight and flexible (quick question when the toe is covered with the material is it called double-lasted?). It has a carbon fiber shank plate that comes up the side on the lateral arch for stability. Aiding to the stability issue is the TPU toe strap and connected TPU piece that goes to the heel. Then comes the coolest part. The upper strap is removable. The logo on the back is connected to the heel piece with magnets on the edges (sketches will come). The logo is connected to the strap which can be removed and the logo can be replaced with a normal logo (without the strap). Let me know what you think!
Rich Benares (644)
11:18:00 PM Wednesday, July 11, 2007
Double Lasted: The use of two pieces of fabric in the upper. One is sewn in the traditional way - either Strobel slip-lasted or slip-lasted, while the other is kept loose until the midsole is attached. Then it is wrapped under the midsole before the outersole is attached, thereby covering the midsole and adding support and protection to the shoe.

Travis, good job, looks better then the Kobe 3, thatsfor sure. I cant really see Kobe doin Foamposite though. And I think the midsole is a bit too thick, would add extra weight which he wouldnt like.....good job though.

I don't have any relationship with Jordan Brand except chatting with designers here on kicksguide or over other sites.
It's funny because when I posted my shoe, I had received a lot of comments saying leopard print was too much for a Jordan shoe (which is sometime intended just for classic clean style, while i believe there is room for Wild style, given MJ's wild cmpetitor spirit on court).
...so now seeing cheetah displayed over real Jordan Brand shoe (Air Jordan XI low I.E.!!!) makes me even more confident about my ideas ;)
4:16:00 PM Tuesday, July 17, 2007
I actually think the leopard print looks WAY better on your design than on those XI IE's, Pietro. The print combined with the patent is way too much for me.
I just wanted to get feedback on my And1 Cornering II design. I've developed it some more since I last posted it.
BTW, right-click, "view image", to see in best resolution.
4:54:00 PM Tuesday, July 17, 2007
Ben thats an excellent job. Knowing how old you are and how much more time you have to develop I can honestly say ( if you stay on course ) you will have a very promising career in the footwear industry. Keep up the good work. Im glad to see someone so young be able to grasp what it takes to design a shoe as oppose to creating a pretty picture and also take all the critisisms as well as suggestions and apply them to your product. Good Job again :)
5:46:00 PM Tuesday, July 17, 2007
Ben: your Cornering II design looks very good!
I think the only functional downside i can find is the top strap which i believe would be difficult to fix, especially top and bottom row of straps seem to work in a bad angle...I believe the effect of that combination of forces will result in a force that will fold the heel counter like panel that serves also as strap locker.
I also think lock down pressure is a bit too much concentrated on soft parts of the ankle (top ankle, frontal tendons) so you need to cushion it very well.
Beside that the design is very cool and i also like how you have combined different styles for presentation to seek your own way (i.e. zen, justin and even tony's attention in studying each shoe angle - cool outsole too).
My only advice for renderings is maybe to slightly work them with photoshop to improve a bit the contrast (if my screen is correct...).
Nice stuff!!!
Ciaoooo
Pietro
P.S.: it would be cool to see the comments of og. Cornering designer ;)...Justin...
6:29:00 PM Tuesday, July 17, 2007
Thanks for the comments guys!
Rich: Thanks man! Hopefully I can stay on course and keep doing what I'm doing....that's really my goal for the next few years.....and maybe to make the finals in a few more contests ;-)
Pietro: Thanks a lot dude! I did realize the straps would add some pressure to the ankle. That's why I had the booty go all the way up to the ankle. I did not think of the angle of those top and bottom straps...that's a very good point.
I'm glad you caught on to me combining the different means of presentation. I didn't think anyone would. I figured since this was sort of a tribute to JT, I might as well throw in some of the styles of other KG greats.
That's another good point about the contrast. That seems to be something I'm not so good at since most of my stuff is hand-done. Do you have any advice on improving the contrast in ps? I really wouldn't know where to start, and I do think that could help my presentation a lot.
PS: Justin already commented on the 1st version of my design a few pages back....although it would be cool to hear more in-depth thoughts from him.
7:01:00 PM Tuesday, July 17, 2007
Ben: contrast/brightness regulation is very important because it's difficult to scan images just like you have designed them, so a little refinement work is necessary.
The command should be in the "Image" >>> "Modify" menu...i'm not sure because i have italian version which has italian command names...
What i usually do is to work both on lightness and contrast to be sure that background is white and then the colors of design are net and bright like I've designed them...
There is no rule about that, just your own sensitivity which will improve along the way...each time we talk about renderings/photoshop/... we say "you will improve with practice"...and that's the truth.
The more you work with them the more you become good.
So make your experiments and go with what you feel it's better, trying to improve it time after time.
After brightness/contrast you can also play with "color balance" and "hue/saturation" commands which are VERY powerful to obtain colors like you want.
NOTE: picture brightness/contrast also depends on your pc screen calibration, so be sure it is correct ;)
Rendering/presentation styles: no problem, trying different styles is correct, so you will be able to find your own way and you can shift through diff styles easily.
10:29:00 PM Tuesday, July 17, 2007
Thanks for that advice Pietro. I actually used the hue/saturation function to render the regional colors for this shoe. It's very powerful and easy to use.
Anyways I'll keep your advice in mind and hopefully it will help get my renderings to the level I'd like them to be at.

Oh man Ryan, that really sucks, I´m sorry to see that!
I was just talking ti my boss the other day how stupid that is!
6:32:00 AM Wednesday, July 18, 2007
Damn, sorry to hear that Ryan, that was a really nice shoe you did. Ben really nice stuff, opne thing that bothers my eyes are the angles of the little strp pieces or I dont know what to call em on the heelpiece, maybe make the angle a bit different or make the line a bit more curved. Other then that sick job on that design. Hands down, if we compare it to your age, man I'm jelous. Good work, keep it up!
6:53:00 AM Wednesday, July 18, 2007
Yeah its a shame. I wish you could be compensated somehow. But like I said in the other thread, they look pretty decent even though they left out some cool details. Im still looking for a pic of my huarache that got ripped off. I forgot to save the pic.
8:07:00 AM Wednesday, July 18, 2007
Ryan: ...it is really a sad thing...I believe they could afford buying original design from you...I don't believe it could be too expensive for them...
Anyway I hope things will change in China...the other day they have executed (!) the minister of economy due to a corruption case regarding imitating products...I'm totally against capital punishment, but they seem to start to take care of companies knocking off everything from westerrn countries...we will see...
Thomas: I've saved my own Qyordan (the name was something like that...i believe it is the chinese translation of "Jordan") knock off on my home pc, so I could have saved even yours. Have you tried to look for the pictures here on Kicksguide? maybe in the first "general discussion" topic.

If you are going to steal someones design and not compensate them for it, the least they could do is send you a pair of the shoes you are knocking off to the person who designed it. I mean really.

Pretty sad that its most chinese companies who do this. while allot of chinese people, are good designers. Sad there are bad designers/companies who steels designs stuff.
Too bad allot of beginning design student think its best too copy design.
I've been making skins and mods for a game for few years. I learned myself best way to make skins , but allot beginning skinner take my skins for base and edit small things and say they made it.
I really hate it when someone steals design and I will never steal, cause I know how hard it is for designers to make things. To bad allot of beginners think is easy to edit stuff instead of begin from a clean sheet.

It depends from where you look at it.
first of: it is a chance for you all to see what a drawing on a web site can magically become a product, and the one who drew it, can claim it put some picture in a portfolio....etc... it offers a plus, as somebody considered your idea as a marketing value. the bad point is you didn't have a chance to experience the development of your idea, all the steps u should take from a rendering to a product etc....
second point, If you dont want to be ripped off, then challenge yourself with a more futuristic, difficult to build, piece of footwear and then you will see their impossibility to copy.
I am not wondering why this shoe instead of this other shoe is been knocked off, and it won't stop it until you all stop drawing simple hoops shoes the way they have been built for the last 35 years, I mean an upper over a mid sole over an outsole with whatever plastic thing in between....
I would take this opportunity here to question completely the footwear, something nobody knows how to build it or something that will take these clever copy cats4 years to release it.....that means never.
with that written, I hope i have offended nobody's sensibility this time...........

I donno if it is possible to design a shoe that can not be made, cause mostly if its can not be made it would be a bad design actually.
And if you do design a total new closing mechanism or any new tech probably not the smartest to send in here. Cause they can easily steal it, but best to get a patent for it so you get legal protection. But its very expensive to get a patent.
Probly still best to stick with velcro, laces and other kind of fastners. I can't think would be possible to design a shoe that cant be made.
5:27:00 PM Thursday, July 19, 2007
Bruno:
your point of view is very interesting and challenging...but...imagine i have a revolutionary idea for making a shoe completely out of carbon fibre or an idea to create smart studs for soccer boots, well, i will never post them here or in other sites.
If i have an idea for a new type of construction, feasible in 5-10 years from now I think I will not post it here.
I think a lot of persons have eyes wide open on here and it's too "easy" to take inspiration from fresh minds.
On the other side I believe this site is a big aid for young designers willing to improve their skills. But you have to know that for getting exposure you risk that your ideas could be used from greedy people.
I also would like to move the discussion on a different theme now.
FOOTWEAR DESIGN IS DEAD
Just check the right side of this site...
Best designer in best companies to see their design dropped, while the "retro it all" movement is gaining more and more yards...in the name of pure PROFIT...
In 2003 Tinker Hatfield have said (see Crooked Tongues interview) that at that time it was almost impossible to create new and inovative products having to go through so many hurdles (marketing groups, regional groups...)...his most successful and inovative designs were created putting the ear to the ground and listening to the heart beat of different cultures, countries, neighbourhoods...it was impossible to do that in 2003, imagine today!
To me is a huge shame to see such a big amount of talent (my friend designers own tons of that) so under-employed by companies.
I would like to listen to other voices...Am I the only fool perceiving this???
12:38:00 AM Friday, July 20, 2007
I understand where you're coming from, Pietro, but I don't agree.
Tinker delivered gound-breaking shoe design at a time when the footwear industry was primed for it. The stars were aligned... The fitness craze/industry was booming, Nike Air was young, and PU and EVA foams were new shoe manufacturing mediums. And there was still a very clear line between fashion and performance footwear, which was swiftly obliterated by Nike.
That environment can never be recreated. It's gone. It's extremely difficult to make anything other than small incremental improvements in footwear technology anymore. So the change-craving market has to rely more on fashion elements than technology. And fashion, being the circular cycle that it is, is going to deliver "retro" trends.
FOOTWEAR DESIGN IS NOT DEAD and it never will be. It's just going through a period that looks a bit gloomy from your/our vantage point. We have a strong bent toward hoop shoes here. Hi-tops for casual wear is nowhere near as popular as it used to be. And though it may never be as strong as it once was, it will likely be stronger in the future.
But if you're a running shoe designer at Asics, Brooks or Mizuno, or if you worked for Puma, you'd laugh your a$$ off at the notion of footwear design being dead.
I know you typed that line as much for shock value as anything else. But it does open an interesting discussion.
2:43:00 AM Friday, July 20, 2007
Interesting discussion guys!
Yes, the exciting athletic market that we once knew is now gone. Being a part of sport culture is now more of a commonality than the movement it once was. Leading performance footwear companies are scratching their heads as their hoops and running shoe sales plummet despite many efforts to revive it. The bottom line, as Ryan said, is that "tech" is not fashionable for everyday so much anymore. People got played out after years of this dominating and are looking for something else. The problem is, nobody know WHAT that something else is, so we'll continue to see nonsensical material and colorway "exclusives" until this fad exhausts itself and SOMEBODY has the balls to step up with the next "IN" thing. I don't think anyone will be able to foresee what this "thing" will be- it will just happen magically as Jordan's partnership with Nike.
What saddens me is that BALLS used to determine who was on top and why they were the ones people followed. Nike specifically has now fallen into the trap of FOLLOWING half a$$ companies that deal in trendiness and has left their pride in innovation behind. It seems that the corporate monster they have become as a result of their years of dominance has now left them trapped inside of their own box. They have stood by "performance only" for so long, that once loyal customers now feel cheated by their inability to evolve in any way except by following the current fads to hold market share and selling out on all they stood for to keep dollars coming in. After all, it is a business. (cont'd)
3:03:00 AM Friday, July 20, 2007
I am talking about Nike/Jordan in particular because of my own feelings for the company AND the fact that they have become the very benchmark by which footwear sales and design is measured.
Granted, the methods by which shoes are made are actually very old, and as Ryan said, difficult to change to say the least. And perhaps a solution to THAT will bring the change. It seems strange though that they haven't experimented with some new and innovative footwear SOLUTIONS for today's society that aren't necessarily sport-related. Just life-related! This applies to all companies I suppose. How come nobody can design a comfortable casual shoe for the blue-collar worker that looks cool and feels good? You can't tell me there's no customer for that! I used to be on my feet walking hard for 11 hours a day. My soles were falling off in 2 weeks and I wasn't allowed to wear athletic shoes. Or what about a casual shoe that just works better with the foot than an Air Force one and has a completely different language than anything we've seen? Anyone seen a snowboarding/ski boot you can walk in without feeling like Frankenstein?
(cont'd)
3:04:00 AM Friday, July 20, 2007
It's a very disheartening time. I hope all of you guys can stay passionate about FOOTWEAR design in general and not just hoops, because the climate is changing and it would be a hell of a waste of talent to box yourselves in. Use your love for hoops shoes to carry you over and find that same love for designing creative solutions to other activities. What do people do? How can the shoe they wear make it better? It's great that we have this forum to share our ideas and thoughts. I like what KG has done in branching out in terms of the contest themes. These are the little things that are creating the next evolution, even though we may not see it now. It's going to be a long haul, my friends but everything comes full circle. Tech WILL make a return, just not in the way you remember it. Be an artist and make the foot better with your creative talents.Keep the faith strong and your minds open! We are the future!
5:03:00 AM Friday, July 20, 2007
OK Ryan, if you want to properly tell it, it's not a death case...but a DEEP COMA...;)
I live far from the biz and I believe my perspective is almost the same I have had in years, only a bit deeper, so I think my perception is quite correct.
For sure until the passion will be burning inside designers hearts all over the world footwear design will never die!!!
But there are no signals of a trend change and I have to say that in todays market both top range and mid range shoes lack of some creativity.
Sometimes low priced shoes look more interesting than the higher priced one, which shows how much the hurdles for designers become higher and higher when expectations arise.
If you look at upcoming releases, not just nike or jordan, but adidas, reebok...you can see design is stagnating...they have designers 10 times better than me and amazing resources...how is it possible?
I agree with you about Tinker initial designs...everything had to be created, there was room for revolutionize the footwear world.
But HIS words (check interview in Crooked Tongues website, you have to register first) were latter, he was talking of 2003...if it was difficult for him (having such a huge background and personality) to make marketing /managing people accept his ideas imagine an average Joe coming from whatsoever part of the world.
My provocation is kind of a wake up call, and not ato criticise designers for sure.
I'd like to see what people think, I'd like to get other designers involved into this.
8:18:00 AM Friday, July 20, 2007

"Be an artist and make the foot better with your creative talents.Keep the faith strong and your minds open! We are the future!"
As long as we will read those kind of words, design won't die.
the future, obviously is not written, its a consequence.
the situation in the market today, what Pietro calls the frozen creativity (stagnation) isn't due to the lack of talent and commitment, its is due to the objective set by the share holders and the attempt to quantify every little corner of our industry. every shoe should pay back.
nobody can quantify the creativity, the emotion, the smart idea, THE THING that will make a precedent.
Marketing can quantify, with the power of numbers, the philosophy dripping from it the strategies the formulas......etc
but i am positive, because too much of something creates one day its opposite, because human being hasn't changed...

6:10:00 PM Friday, July 20, 2007
back to your comments Johnny and Pietro, what kind of feedback are you looking for?? the lines of your shoes are beautiful?? what a color blocking?? whoaoo u added a new piece of carbon nice perforations, nice rendering beautiful little window.....I don't think so.
Unfortunately, the position I am in today, doesn't allow myself to post anything more than words, and this carefully, in order to avoid any conflict or non-intentional disclosure.
In the meantime, i have hundreds of ideas like you guys that haven't hit the market still, why? because it is partly frozen.
these ideas might be too old one day...we will be gone one day.
here is the choice: either i am designing shoe with my parents technology (35 years old), either i challenge the most i can my community by producing the "unseen" here or at work
guess what, u might not get money for inspiring copy cats in and out, but you can claim and prove you were the first..... in short either you are the ones who shake the tree either you are the ones waiting for the fruits.
6:57:00 PM Friday, July 20, 2007
Guys, that's only ,midnight Pacific time....it's not that serious. LOL. KG's site posts all times as Eastern. I am somewhat of a night owl though. That's when my mind works the best: When the rest of society has gone to sleep and there is unforced peace and calm around me. It's like thinking in outerspace ;)
Bruno: I will admit that it can be hard for me to follow your English, but I think I get the gyst of what you are saying. In some ways, CREATIVITY ITSELF used to BE the precedent. People gravitated toward it and embraced it. They were excited by it as I have always been and I am not sure why it has changed for them. But now, sadly, society is composed of billions of sheep who seemingly favor rehashed trends and forced "uniqueness". Or is it that they are making that choice because that is all they have to choose from when they look at a wall of shoes? Which came first? the chicken or the egg? I suppose it goes against the natural laws of marketing and capitalism to have some Balls and put something FRESH and UNPROVEN on that wall to see if it works. But that is not a guaranteed dollar, so nevermind. I think Puma is one of only a few companies doing it. Thank you, Puma. But, in the same Token, I doubt it's translating to big dollars which will probably make it short-lived.
We will undoubtedly look back at this confused time much as we do the 80's and wonder what the hell we were thinking. Neon green crocskin and pink velvet shoes?! "What was I wearing?!!"
But let's not forget what the 80's eventually brought us: The 90's.
Everything happens for a reason. I think we are in a transition focused on materials and graphics that will eventually merge back with tech and bring us some unprecented, and beautiful product that could not have existed before due to the closed mind on fashion from the sporting goods industry. Eventually it will make sense.

We must be patient and continue to broaden our talents and skills while absorbing this evolution around us, so when the time comes we can spearhead the next revolution in footwear. Damn, I can NOT seem to get off of this Soapbox!!! Somebody slap me! LOL.

I haven't been on here in a while, but I had to weigh in on this one. I feel that we as a society are not satisfied with what we have. We live in a society of instant gratification, but that gratification only lasts for a minute. I feel that some designers (not all) are pressed by owners, marketing annalists, and corporate drones to produce on an unprecedented level. They are run like slaves to try to come up with the next big thing that will make them their next dollar, not the next big thing that is going to be a technological wonder or an artistic masterpiece. If you look at the number of products released today and the frequency in which they are released, it has grown at an exponential rate when compared to 10, 20, even 30 years ago. They have flooded the market with half a$$ed ideas just to rush to get the next item out before their competitors so they can keep growing. If they don't grow in profit, their company shows a loss, their stocks drop, investors sell out, they lose money, and then they fire people because it was "their" design that was the problem. It most times is always about money, and that is not a bad thing. We all want to make money. The problem is when it becomes nothing more than about just money and not about a design that impresses people now, and will impress them through out time. I know that a lot of this is out of designers’ control. Designers don't design because we think that "hey this is a piece of crap, quality wise and artistically, but its what the marketing people said they needed; something different than the product we released two weeks ago, because its lost its now-ness, and we have to grow our company, because the $250 billion dollars we made last year was 2% less than the 10% growth we projected."

But hey, this is just my opinion. And please don't get me wrong, not all companies are like this, but I feel a good number of them are. I do feel that the market is in stagnation, but I don't feel it is the designers’ faults. There are a great number of factors that have contributed to this stagnation, some of which I stated above.

I know this isn't on the topic of discussion but I need to start getting some footwear items in my portfolio and was wondering what exactly makes a good footwear designer portfolio (as far as design, or subject, rendering)...
Rich Benares (644)
12:28:00 AM Saturday, July 21, 2007
William the key to a good footwear portfolio is to be able to show your thought process that lead up the final design. As an example..look at Tony Hardmans Jordan submission and you will see what it takes to create a very nice, effect and more importantly professional presentation. One other key thing is for you to truly understand what you have put down on paper and be able to either defend it or find an alternative when asked by the interviewer.

Bruno, youve got a ppoint I aint sayin that. But I think dsesign aint dead, if I put it in the words of Nas and Hip-Hop. On the feedback, Im ion high school still plenty to go and since most people here are pro or better then me, they all help me move forward and get better. I look for negatives and expect those in critiqs.

Heres something I was tinkering around with last night..
5:54:00 AM Wednesday, July 25, 2007
I have a uni assignment/folio at the moment, which pretty much involves designing some sort of electrical device that aids in a sport, it can help a player, coach, spectator, umpire/ref in either training and/or competition or even just messing around non-competitively. Or even as a health monitor or rehibilhtaion device..
i would like to do something shoe related, as shoes are one of my passions and i know a lot abotut them thus reducing research time... but i am not forcing myself to, so if anyone has anything else please tell me
however it can be for any sport, even something as obscure as chess, or croquet.
i was just wondering if anyone has been doing a sport and thought "it would be really useful if i had a ..... now" or if anyone has any ideas that would really help a sport.
something like the nike+ kit, where the shoe can link to an ipod to motivate as well as track run distances, calerioes, speeds etc really helps promote running and gives great feedback.
it is a tough one because i dont want anything that gives a major advantage, ie shoes that make you jump higher in bball or anything that cheats the sport or makes a skill in the sport redundant!

Ryan: I'm watching a friendly basketball game , Serbia vs Australia. Australian team has "PEAK" as technical partner...An aussie player is wearing a white/grey shoe that could be your design...I will better investigate.
Have you contacted them?
1:05:00 PM Friday, August 03, 2007
RYAN: Man, if you keep producing these hot designs for other companies, Wal-Mart is going to get mad! Isn't it some kind of breach-of-contract to design for 2 companies at the same time!
BEN A-K: Once again, nice work. Are you trying to make me look bad by showing me up!? J/K. That is really nice work. Your drawing skills are obviously improving, which is something I value highly, and it is nice to see that you took the time to revisit it and refine it. That s important, because there is pretty much never going to be a time when you finish a design, and it is done. We are always reworking it and reworking it. I do think it would be a bit restrictive around the ankle, though. But, hey, that's what pattern trials and fit tests are for! Also, it looks like you have 5 dots on the end of the strap. You couldn't do that on a non-Nike shoe because of the Alpha Project 5 dots that Nike used to use alot and still shows up from time to time.
Good job with the alternate views as well, because we all know that even though WE can see what is going on in our heads, MARKETING can't. That's why they are in marketing, LOL. Sorry, I had to take that little shot at marketing. (Disclaimer: our marketing is really quite good.)
1:15:00 PM Friday, August 03, 2007
Here is something for you designers to try out.
Your mission should you choose to accept it:
1. Design a shoe, or any product for that matter.
2. When finished, show it around to friends and family and/or anyone you think knows anything about the product you designed.
3. Gather their feedback, and rework the design accordingly.
(It is important to remember that i this step you don't have to change everything, if there are some parts you think are necessary and are important to the design, you can fight for them to stay, but you have to be able to defend those parts.)
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the desired design is reached. It should be something that keeps your design intent but still solves the intended problem, while being pleasing to your "focus group."
This should give you a little taste of how the design and marketing teams work together, and the process of reworking the design and tweaking it until the desired product is created. It would also be nice to see documentation of the different feedback gathered from friends and family and how you used or didn't use it. This is, of course, not mandatory, but just a little something I think would be a valuable experience for aspiring footwear designers. If you can show that you can take feedback, and execute against it, the powers that be will definately like that. Trust me.

Problem if you don't have a family or friend who got taste, you got a big problem. My whole msn list of 50 person only 1 is a good designer.
3:27:00 PM Friday, August 03, 2007
Not necessarily. Do you think every kid in the focus groups we conduct has "taste" or a good fashion sense. Almost none of them are going to be good designers, or even want to be for that matter.
It's all about taking the feedback and filtering it out. You never know where a good nugget of knowledge will come from. You can also talk to anyone who plays sports. They don't have to be super athletes, either, just people who can provide feedback.
Chung Dha Lam (0)
4:00:00 PM Friday, August 03, 2007
Problem I know most people who arent designers only say things like or hate it with no helping comment on what parts could be improved. Other designers give better feedback then not designers.

Stephen, hmm Im liking the concept, using the flightposite again, cool. I think thats actualy a manufacturable shoe. Although one thing is the anle of the swoosh, dont think that looks too good. ANd doesnt look like something Nike would do. And another thing is placing a support panel or call it whatever under the arch of the foot, know which one I mean? I think thats unnecesarry and its just extra weight. Other then that good job!
Brian Moughty (378)
9:27:00 PM Tuesday, August 07, 2007
stephen- The ankle is similar to the XVI low...but more advanced..The cut is a lot higher and the material/build is stronger as it mimics and ankle sleeve...There is a closure system at top, and then can be flipped over, and folded down and closed again...It is for a court/street look...or just a player who wants more or less support..
10:04:00 AM Wednesday, August 08, 2007
that woulda been decent for the freestyle, brian...cool idea. and johnny, i got a few cues from the ajxiii, like the support pod on the lateral side of the midfoot, i know it worked for that shoe. but there's probably a good reason we haven't seen it since. 13 is my favourite jordan, though...

Medials sick, the lateral is maybew a bit too simple for my taste. But the Kobes are overall well designed, although the 3s aree really ugly on pics so far.
5:39:00 PM Tuesday, August 14, 2007
That Shaq shoe is kinda ugly whats that lasering on the side?
Barbu nice rendering, did you colour that with PS? The shape is off, toebox is too long and thin for a bball shoe and the midsole is much too thick.
Great stuff Tyler, the first one, upper left I really like, try drawing the whole shoe on a straight line, cause the outsoles shape is kinda wierd and a line helps you see hoe it needs to look. Otherwise good ideas, shape needs work usually. The one on the left 2nd from top is a really cool cleat! And I'm feelin the one with a 3/4 view. Great job, keep it up!

Does anyone else hate their sketches as soon as they scan them in? I just find mine so ugly on the computer! I'm not saying their perfect on paper at all, but I can't even look at them for too long on screen! (Check the image below). I know it's not quite Justin Taylor or Ryan Holler marker material, nowhere near! But on paper I'm happy with it, but once scanned I hate it!
I do have quite a cheap scanner. Is that anything to do with it? Or maybe I just need to take more care with my drawings. I was just wondering with your marker renderings, do you do anything to them or do you just scan them in and thats it?
11:47:00 PM Friday, August 24, 2007
Jason: the sketches look fine. I actually prefer ur b/w...the one where u added color is a little flat looking. I think it's the white highlight on the vamp..don't add so much.

for materials i usually either search for them in google image, scan that material if i have it, or i will actually create it in photoshop or illustrator.
12:35:00 AM Monday, August 27, 2007
Barbu, to echo Nick, Google image search is easiest.
HERE'S A QUICK PHOTOSHOP TEXTURE TUTORIAL...
When seeking a good texture (Canvas for instance) once you find one you like, get it into Photoshop and use either Brightness/Contrast or your Levels adjuster to give it a high black/white contrast (This will give you a wider range of control when you use it later, trust me). Just to be safe, create a "Textures and Patterns" folder somewhere in your files and save it there.
With your new texture file open in Photoshop, choose Edit > Define Pattern. Now, in your design rendering, after you create a design detail (make sure it's on its own layer), go to Layer > Layer Style > Pattern overlay. Your new texture will be among those in the image menu that appears. Choose it.
But before you click OK... If your rendering detail already had some level of shading and highlighting in it that you'd like to keep, play around with the "Blend Mode" menu in the open dialog box, particularly the Darken, Multiply, Color Burn, & Linear Burn options. This will keep your shading intact and still get the new texture effect.
Don't click OK yet... Now tinker with your Scale and Opacity settings to get the final appearance you want. (This is where the high contrast of the original texture is helpful.)
Working with all of these variables, once you get the look you desire, CLICK OK! You're done.

Hi guys,
Been following up the kicks in this site for quite sometime. I've been a big basketball shoe fan, but haven't bought any in the last 1 year (having problem rotating all the shoes for every game >_<). I also design shoes, but not sport shoes per say, more casual boots. Ideally I would love to design sport shoes, however since the company left sports shoe since the 80's...
Anyways, here's my submission, a rough design done in vector, and the actual shoe (w/ slight adjustment here and there). The shoe is a casual boot that is upgradeable to safety boots (yes, there's a steel toecap in there). Wanted to design a work shoe that's different with the ones already in the market. The upper and outsole are original design, outsole design conforms to the EN standard. I used Nubuck leather to give the shoe a more luxurious look, and nylon waterproof canvas for the variations. Since I'm still making them in small quantities, had to go with whatever I currently have.
Also saw a posting earlier in this thread about the shoe design software. I actually have a USM3 3D design software. The software actually uses an actual scanned shoelast model, and we just create the upper right on top of it. However since the program is a derivative from Crispin, there are a lot of designs that can't be done (like a big part with foam padding), I guess the software is ideal only for simple designs. The only advantage from the software is that it's simple and fast, and from the 3D model, I can convert it directly to a 2D shoe pattern..
Just in case that the designs I made should be posted elsewhere, sorry ;P

Very cool, Brian. Is that boot in retail? If so, go over to the "List of production shoes designed by KGers" thread, repost the pic and tell us where it's being sold. Nice work.

Those are actually pretty nice tennis shoes.

4:16:00 AM Thursday, August 30, 2007
Thanks Ryan, yeah it's in retail, only in 1 store hehehe. I'll repost it there. I could use the input, pretty subjective to my own designs.
12:33:00 PM Saturday, September 01, 2007
Those Venus Williams shoes are actually pretty nice. I like the mesh-material used on the overlay. Very clean.
I just wanted to post my revised And1 design to get comments before I did the completed renderings. A few things not noted in the rendering and sketch: There will be a slit in the shroud where the line is below the "AND1" text. As it's rendered now, it looks like there is a line sticking out, but I plan to make that a slit to allow natural flex and make the shroud less restraining.
1:07:00 PM Saturday, September 01, 2007
BA Keane: I think I might prefer the shoe if you lost the strap that covers the vamp. It justs seems like there are too many layers at this point. I'm guessing that u have MORE upper material under the shroud. yeah?
The medial side looks much cleaner and lighter...but even still a little heavy. Maybeeee...you could carve more out of the white material that wraps around the heel? And does it need to wrap around BOTH sides..the same way?
6:03:00 PM Saturday, September 01, 2007
Good points Wayne. Maybe I could combine the forefoot and ankle straps into one huge quarter piece. No straps or anything, just one perforated leather piece with lacing. Or maybe not. I'll just try some different things. It definitely needs to change though.
You're right about the medial. I just did that sketch quickly to show how the shroud would attach at the heel and to show the large shank. I don't think that big bulky heel piece would be necessary anyway, since you doesn't push off the medial side of your foot. Maybe I could eliminate it and have "AND1" in huge letters like on my other design.
Anyways, thanks for the comment Wayne. Hopefully I can get a few other comments so I can perfect this design.
9:42:00 AM Sunday, September 02, 2007
Nice stuff Be. I agree on Wayne and his pointers about, maybe too many lyewrs being on it, which will result in a hjeavy basketball shoe, which not too many people like. Try combinin the straps, that seem like a good idea, although I like how, one there's a strap that locks on the medial and one that locks on the lateral, that'll create great lockdown most likely. So maybe try to simplify and cant wait to see a full rendering!
Brian Lee (37)
4:52:00 AM Thursday, September 06, 2007
Ben:
Love the And1 design, looks nice.
What material is the shroud made of? Leather?
IMHO the shroud looks like it might actually hinder the ankle movement due the height? Unless the material is a stretchy fabric.. in which case just ignore what I've just typed.
Just make sure the production uses a good velcro.. Even the ones in Lebron 20.5.5. were weak, they'll get loose during wear..>_<
12:08:00 PM Thursday, September 06, 2007
The 20.5.5s were terrible velcroe wise, I actually took mine back and exchanged them for , I'm not sure what, 3s maybe, but they always became undone while playin ball.
5:20:00 PM Thursday, September 06, 2007
Thanks for the comment Brian! I was thinking the shroud would be made of leather, but maybe if I made the part of the shroud that covers the lacing system out of elastic, it would allow the foot to flex freely. Thanks for the idea!
I just want to clarify one thing that I think I didn't make clear. There is actually no upper materials under the shroud and strap, just a mesh booty and lacing system (the system would lace up the booty for a tight fit, and then the shroud and forefoot strap would provide more outer stability). I could see if there was more leather underneath that it would be very heavy and bulky shoe, but I don't think the shoe would be very heavy with just a booty underneath, do you guys?
Brian Lee (37)
6:21:00 AM Friday, September 07, 2007
Hi Ben, your welcome.
Personally I prefer a basketball shoe with a good ankle support, but then again since the trend seems to be pointing at a lower cut and more flexible materials.. oh well..perhaps the tight fit of the booty and shroud would help?
I thought that if you use leather for the shroud, wrinkles will be unavoidable and in worst case scenario.. the leather would eventually stretch. Unless you use suede leather (just to avoid wrinkles).. but even then it would eventually start to scuff.
Just booty underneath? Kinda reminded me to the Zoom Flight (got 1), I think that shoe was considered to be one of the lightest ball shoe to come out, Leather w/ booty underneath. So if you're doing the shoe the way you mentioned, it could be even lighter!
I designed a boot using the 2 locking mechanisms as well, however since it's a design for combat boots, I can easily place the strap right above the ankle. The 2 straps each have 2 rollers attached to them, so upon lacing up, the 2 straps will experience a greater pull, strapping tighter.
Weight wasn't the most important issue <grin>.

Hey guys, I've been playing around with ideas on how to build upon the successes of the Shox technology. Ideas ranging from different more fluid configurations to adjusting the give of the columns on the fly. Any constructive feedback welcome! Later_

Hmm that would be cool. It needs to be made lighter in weight, it cant race with Air max 360, zoom air etc. The responsivness isnt too good either if you ask me. Plus make the shox shoes a bit more slim.
1:40:00 PM Thursday, September 13, 2007
seems like shox has become increasingly responsive over the years, but that could be just me because i've grown since 2000...

lol Wayne. Im not gonna lie, Im a 12.5 on that list. Its not totally my fault. People think I can't shoot the three, so they back off and test me. So I will take the shot, and for the most part end up missing. Eventually I'll get hot who knows.
11:41:00 AM Friday, September 14, 2007
After a while everyone will make the 3s.

this is a rendering i'm working on... still in process as you can see.. I need help though. How do i turn this rough sketch into a clean computer rendering on photoshop? could anybody explain this for me?
Also if there's anything to C&C, feel free to do so.

If you want to do it with digital stuff, then you should use a program that works with vectors, to do the outlines, then finish it off with some PS. Or you can trace the lines in PS as well. But I'§M not good with that kinda stuff so hopefully someone else will help. BUt you can also do it by hand, which I prefer. A simple BIC pen is perfect for tracing. Then some good quality markers to add colours. Hmmm you migth also want to check proportions, cause those aint totally on point.
2:09:00 PM Tuesday, September 18, 2007
Yeah it doesnt work for me either. Check it out at michaelditullo.com, then tuorials I think and then click on proportions.

I have an idea for a new contest:
BMW Concept CS!
BMW's design language brings to mind: Edginess, Agression, Sharpness, Creases, Cutting Edge Design, Edges sharp enough to Cut, Avant Guarde, Exceptional Quality, Superior Performance, Flame Surfacing, Sculpted, and best of all(or worst of all if you hate BMW), BANGLE!
No matter what adjectives you use to describe BMW's style, it still amounts to one of the most forward-thinking independent brands of today's, and tomorrow's, automotive industry. Yes, Chris Bangle has revolutionized the auto giant for better (or worse if your one of the haters) and BMW's language has just reached a higher, more sophisticated dialect with the Shanghai Auto Show release of the super-sexy Concept CS!
There's been the Ferrari F430 contest, the Mercedes SL contest, now it's time for the BMW Concept CS contest! Bring BMW styling to the footwear industry - but your own 'twin kidneys' or 'bangle but' on a caliente shoe design!

I have many new ideeas for next contests...like...a shoe for a music band...here's my submission! :)) UUUUU YEAAAAAH! A BIT OF MY TIME FOR THE GREATEST BAND EVER!

The one which you placed the foot inside is better. But the first one had a toebox which was too big. EVen compared to the shoe you posted underneath it.
RAgfael, fix up the shape and try secthin on clear papaer, that'll make the design a lot more visible!

Fransergio, nice rendering, great job with PS.It looks a bit too long compared to the height for a sneaker. Other then that great ides! Is the midolse in the heel, feature anythin or is that just a design element?

... So I went about it to do one myself. Just thought I'd show you guys. Just did one to put on my KG work I'm putting in my portfolio, just so everyone knows I didn't actually work for Nike etc. and clear any confusion lol.
Anyway tell me what you think. Very simple and quickly done. But it does the job...

Hi everybody,
two years after posting the original design here on Kicksguide, I'm really happy to introduce the Hops "Ol Skool" shoe.
Hops is a new company based in Australia and will be launched November 2007. Matt Kaipuke, the founder of Hops, contacted me 18 months ago to design their first shoe, and since he liked my Albatros concept very much, we decided to use that design.
As you can see below we have also developed a Lo cut version which is still a performance basketball shoe, but it also winks at casual customers.
The whole process has been amazing because both of us were starting from zero; along the way we had a lot of things to learn and little problems to solve. Our great passion and chinese manufactuer's experience allowed us to finish the job in best way.
I'm also very happy to say I've been able to follow my design without any compromise; so the shoe will feature, among other things, the "medial wing" which already was the performance cornerstone of my design back in 2005.
Oncourt, I'm pretty sure you will be impressed by the "ol skool"!
For more info visit: www.hops.net.au
I'm really looking forward on getting your feedback and questions.
6:12:00 PM Thursday, October 18, 2007
you got my support P! great design. how does it feel on your feet. and how does it feel seeing something you designed in your hand? congrats on a job well done.
6:42:00 PM Thursday, October 18, 2007
Thanks Luvell.
When I've got my first sample I was spechless, mixed emotions, from one side I was mad happy, from the sneakerhead/professional eye side a few things were not like I've thought. Early samples are like a preview of what the shoe will be, so since it was my first time I didn't know what to expect next.
Then along the development, design, materials and performances improved step by step reaching, and sometimes exceeding, my expectations, it was the best part of all!
On court I think they are very good. They are quite lightweight but stable and well cushioned. The outsole grip is very good and they shine in lateral moves ;)
Well, I'm the designer, so I can't say bad things...but the feedback we are having from our testers is very good too.

Thanks Jake!
...Melbourne is the place!
