A few days ago I saw a kid wearing a hoodie with all over print of shoes on it. Some of the shoes that were included were jordans, nike tempos, adidas kb8. Then I looked closer and noticed that there was also the linework for the Jordan XXI that Pietro Pellicelli designed back in june 2005. It was the 3/4 view to be exact. |

Yes, that shoe is really a copy of my Melo shoe, even details are exactly the same.
I'm not related to them in any way. They just ripped off my stuff. As well as the hoodie. I didn't give any permission to employ one of my designs.
If one of you guys or someone other here at KG could provide me further infos, thanks in advance.
I also can tell that you will see one of my KG shoes on the market SOON, which won't be the Melo...But I will post it first!

it seems tough to stop companies from biting on good designs, even ones in full production...we took a look at Peak's site like a year ago, and most of what they had was straight from the nike and reebok catalogues. |

Check out all of the rip offs they have. The "Return of the King" III is the best. It is a rip off of the Lebron III. The sole is an exact copy. They have no shame. And the huarache rip off is the huarache 2k5 sole and Thomas Le's upper exactly. What a joke!

Does anyone here who owns a pair of AJ XXIs have issues with the lace holders? I know that there was a defect in the lace hoops, but am I the only one to get really bad luck with them?!
Heres the story..
I got the XXIs a few days before release date. Wore them often until one day.. the lace hoop/holder tears apart. I post on here and DE says there is a defect in the product simply return the item to the store to exchange it. Ok, no harm done.. Went to Finishline... no White, Black, Red colorways left...kinda got pissed, but settled for the lows in uni-blue and a pair of mars 4s for my daughter..So I thought everything is all good... NOW last night the lace hoop/holder on the lows comes apart.. I must be the unluckiest guy on the face of this earth! lol Now im reluctant to return the shoe, because I doubt they will have those in stock as well.. Those 21 lows grew on me and Is actually one of my favs..I dont want to lose the shoe nor do i really want a shoe that has a defect...
Anyways im ranting...should I return it in store or to Nike? Do you think Nike will even have them in stock, when Finishline doesnt?
Plus, without a receipt and box ( I wear my shoes, I can careless for the box at times ) im screwed lol They will only give me credit for the amount of the shoe currently and Finishline has it at like 70 bucks....

When it comes to picking shoes, I usually go with bang for my buck. Especially for outdoor use. Price point comes into play when picking shoes for myself. In the $100.00 range I gravitate towards Team Jordans like the B'Loyals or the new High Rise, which im waiting to get. You can also get the DWade 1s currently on sale on eastbay.com for $59 or $69. There are so many shoes out there today that it simply depends on how much you are willing to spend. BTW im shorter 5'5" and heavier 175lbs ( I tell my wife its all muscle! lol ) I normally will play guard, I love to drive to the hoop so my choice of footwear will usually be light and can stand the constant stop and go's of my game. For outdoor balling I currently wear Nike Air Flight Bangers ( Loving the shoes JP! Still cant find that black and white colorway though! haha )

I'm feelin' the jet flight cleat idea...I think Nike should quit making new cleat ideas and use existing basketball and training shoes for cleats...just make a cleated outsole or whatever.
Right now I ball in some ancient Shox Lethals outdoor and Shox Stunners and T-Mac 2s indoor. Two of my favorite shoes design-wise. |

I think I saw the same presentation with Ryan Holler's Jezign concept (which btw I plan on buying soon. Call me kiddish, but I LOVE lights in my shoes, =>) Not positively sure if it was though. Yes, Wayne, I started doing mine like that after I saw a few of Ditullo's presentations. I do it at work too. My boss wanted us to display more of our work on the walls, so a teammate and I started displaying our work like that, from prelim sketch down to final rendering and/or sample photo. It works great because it's so quick and simple to layout. |

So now I finally gotta get something out,
My work is great at K1X, I can tell you that, a pitty I can´t tell you what I´m working on, but it´s great! It´s a lot of fun here, all the people are very nice and there for I gotta say thank you finally KG for beeing able to be part of that site and seeing that miracles really happen, even when you don´t expect it!
This site was the starting point for my passion for shoe design and now beeing able to learn all the things about it at a company like K1X is unbelieveble, I got so many thing to learn and I´m so looking forward to the future to do that.

I'm seein good stuff in there Ben. One thing I dont like all that much, si how the whole shoe seems to point upwards, you kno what I mean? The shapes building it up all extend upward, which if you ask me, which gives it a feeling as it if were a chimney or somethin. But nice sketch! |

I see you have posted on a nike considered shoe. was this an example of how you were thinking of constructing the shoe? I think if you ever get a chance to see that shoe in person there are some interesting construction details. To me on the design will comment more when have more up on it, but initial is that it looks more like a evolution then a revolution. meaning seeing much of the past design language in this one and not much a departure.
interested in seeing more and where you take it. something with a considered/ construction/ environmental story could be something. (keep in mind performance)

Hi Mark,
I originally did this sketch/design before pics had surfaced of the ZK2, but the rumor had come out that it would be a considered shoe, so I decided to incorporate that.
I totally agree about this not being a revolution. This was just something quick that grew out of some doodles, so I didn't put much thought into it being innovative or not. I'm currently working on a much more thorough/innovative design. Once I finish that, though, I might go back and work on this a bit more. I think I might ditch the Kobe aspect of the shoe, I think it would be cool to have a considered basketball shoe all on its own.

what up man!
i like your sketches,the one one the right hand corner on the upper picture with the orange background looks bst, but you gotta work on your shape, i told you that, i know it´s hard, damn when i look at my designs sometimes they make me crazy, a good thing to do is just turn you paper around and hold it against the sun or light and then looks at the shape of your design, shoe whatever, that really helps!!!
K1X is great, Munich is great, man I love it, except the germans, ya they are alright but us Austrians don´t like the germans, especially I don´t but Munich is more likely like Austria!
The work is great, the whole surrounding here is wonderful, talking about shoes and clothing all the time and trying to improve everything! just great and maybe you kkow but you can order or buy other things from Kickz too, for expample I was holding the Zoom Kobe II for the first time in my hands today! man I gotta get it soon, that shoe is awsome!
So I will keep you up to date what´s going on here, hopefully I´ll find some time for the Air Jordan XX3 theme, that is the best!

Thanks for the feedback, for the Gucci, here are some pics, I got ideas from just the shape of the patterns, which you'll probably be able to reconize. Also the straps on the front of the clothes, came up as inspiration and the colours although I didnt colour all my sketches.

Chris: Actually Tim's shape is pretty much on point. The reason I think they look like baby shoes is that overstuffed tounge that is prevalent in all skate shoes. These are all skate shoes that are inspired by BBall players. |

johnny: i skateboard. and personally, i feel there really isnt that much of an importance performance wise for the big toungue. it's mostly a style thing. pick up a skating mag and look how style driven skateboarding is. the big tongue thing is starting to die down a bit. look at some older shoes compared to some now. |

Tim, youre right. There isnt any sort of tech advantage with the fat tongues. When i was younger skate shoes didnt have the fat tongues and and it wasnt really cool looking to tie your shoes tight enough for them to stay on. So I used to roll up some socks and stuff the shoe so that I could keep a good fit and not have to tie my shoes to make them feel snug. It was hard keeping that sock in place when you actually skated in the shoe, so maybe that was a bigger trend than I ever thought and skate companies saw a need for a fatter tongue |

i´m working on a shoe render about Ricky Rubio, who is a very young spanish player.
he debuted on the ACB (Spanish League) at the age of 14!! and he´s actually just 16 years old.
it is a concept about a convertible shoe (hi/lo), using two removable velcro straps that cross on the rear. RR simbol on the rear and "14" on the outsole, using my old concept about the "81" outsole for kobe bryant i posted here one year ago.
I still working on it, so any coments/ideas are really welcome. Thanks!

Here's a sequel I did to JT's And 1 Cornering Mid. After I saw the shoe on zappos.com I thought it was awesome, and I was inspired to do a sequel. I remembered that Justin originally intended the shoe to have a "lace-strap" system (or something like that), so I tried to incorporate a unique lockdown system. The shoe is also meant to be very lightweight.

Thanks Travis! Usually I lay down the main color in marker, which in this case was blue and black. Once I've done that, I use colored pencil to add highlights/shading.

Here are comparison photos of a recent disection of two shoes, the Starbury II ($15) vs. the Adidas ClimaCool Response ($75).
Lest anyone be deceived by the thicker midsole of the adidas, I should point out that sockliner in the Starbury II is thicker than the one in the adidas, making up for most of that difference. This point is not visible at the forefoot and midfoot photos of the Starbury because, regretably, I did not cut completely through the sockliner in those areas. You can see it in the heel photo however. Another difference you can see, in favor of the Starbury, is that it has an extra, super-soft layer of foam cushioning under the heel of the sockliner---not found in the adidas.
The adidas ClimaCool Response is constructed with a combination of PU and PU-coated leather (a.k.a. "action leather"). You can actually see the difference between the two materials in the bottom left image where the upper material is sandwiched between the midsole and outsole---the white fiber of PU on the medial side vs. the grey grain of PU-coated leather on the lateral side.
The Starbury II upper is made of PU throughout and is lined with a slightly thinner layer of foam padding than the ClimaCool Response.
The shoes' tongues are quite different. The adidas has a traditional foam/mesh tongue. The Starbury has a thinner but more modern seamless foam/mesh sleeve (or bootie) which runs forward through the toe of the shoe.
One last point I'd like to make is that I like the cradled design of the heel bed in the adidas ClimaCool Response. Seems it would be quite comfy and stable. However, I have worn neither of these shoes, as they are both sample size 9.
I'll refrain at the point of actually scoring this comparison. You can do that for yourself.

Of course I would, Rich. I'd feel very honored. Thanks for buying it. Does the shoe feel a bit too roomy in the forefoot? That was the only issue I had with them when I got mine. I suggested they fix it but I honestly don't know if they did. I added some Dr. Scholls liners under the factory liner and they felt fine. I played about 6 rec league games in them. I also thought they could've carried the ankle/heel counter padding down closer to the midfoot. |

Here is my current work and first work with my new scanner. Let me introduce it for y'all. It is a Kobe conept with Zoom Air in the heel. The toe is subject to change but is now a Foamposite-inspired thing I don't really know yet I want it to be lightweight and flexible (quick question when the toe is covered with the material is it called double-lasted?). It has a carbon fiber shank plate that comes up the side on the lateral arch for stability. Aiding to the stability issue is the TPU toe strap and connected TPU piece that goes to the heel. Then comes the coolest part. The upper strap is removable. The logo on the back is connected to the heel piece with magnets on the edges (sketches will come). The logo is connected to the strap which can be removed and the logo can be replaced with a normal logo (without the strap). Let me know what you think!

Double Lasted: The use of two pieces of fabric in the upper. One is sewn in the traditional way - either Strobel slip-lasted or slip-lasted, while the other is kept loose until the midsole is attached. Then it is wrapped under the midsole before the outersole is attached, thereby covering the midsole and adding support and protection to the shoe.

Travis, good job, looks better then the Kobe 3, thatsfor sure. I cant really see Kobe doin Foamposite though. And I think the midsole is a bit too thick, would add extra weight which he wouldnt like.....good job though. |

I don't have any relationship with Jordan Brand except chatting with designers here on kicksguide or over other sites.
It's funny because when I posted my shoe, I had received a lot of comments saying leopard print was too much for a Jordan shoe (which is sometime intended just for classic clean style, while i believe there is room for Wild style, given MJ's wild cmpetitor spirit on court).
...so now seeing cheetah displayed over real Jordan Brand shoe (Air Jordan XI low I.E.!!!) makes me even more confident about my ideas ;)

I actually think the leopard print looks WAY better on your design than on those XI IE's, Pietro. The print combined with the patent is way too much for me.
I just wanted to get feedback on my And1 Cornering II design. I've developed it some more since I last posted it.

Ben thats an excellent job. Knowing how old you are and how much more time you have to develop I can honestly say ( if you stay on course ) you will have a very promising career in the footwear industry. Keep up the good work. Im glad to see someone so young be able to grasp what it takes to design a shoe as oppose to creating a pretty picture and also take all the critisisms as well as suggestions and apply them to your product. Good Job again :)

Ben: your Cornering II design looks very good!
I think the only functional downside i can find is the top strap which i believe would be difficult to fix, especially top and bottom row of straps seem to work in a bad angle...I believe the effect of that combination of forces will result in a force that will fold the heel counter like panel that serves also as strap locker.
I also think lock down pressure is a bit too much concentrated on soft parts of the ankle (top ankle, frontal tendons) so you need to cushion it very well.
Beside that the design is very cool and i also like how you have combined different styles for presentation to seek your own way (i.e. zen, justin and even tony's attention in studying each shoe angle - cool outsole too).
My only advice for renderings is maybe to slightly work them with photoshop to improve a bit the contrast (if my screen is correct...).

Rich: Thanks man! Hopefully I can stay on course and keep doing what I'm doing....that's really my goal for the next few years.....and maybe to make the finals in a few more contests ;-)
Pietro: Thanks a lot dude! I did realize the straps would add some pressure to the ankle. That's why I had the booty go all the way up to the ankle. I did not think of the angle of those top and bottom straps...that's a very good point.
I'm glad you caught on to me combining the different means of presentation. I didn't think anyone would. I figured since this was sort of a tribute to JT, I might as well throw in some of the styles of other KG greats.
That's another good point about the contrast. That seems to be something I'm not so good at since most of my stuff is hand-done. Do you have any advice on improving the contrast in ps? I really wouldn't know where to start, and I do think that could help my presentation a lot.
PS: Justin already commented on the 1st version of my design a few pages back....although it would be cool to hear more in-depth thoughts from him. |

Ben: contrast/brightness regulation is very important because it's difficult to scan images just like you have designed them, so a little refinement work is necessary.
The command should be in the "Image" >>> "Modify" menu...i'm not sure because i have italian version which has italian command names...
What i usually do is to work both on lightness and contrast to be sure that background is white and then the colors of design are net and bright like I've designed them...
There is no rule about that, just your own sensitivity which will improve along the way...each time we talk about renderings/photoshop/... we say "you will improve with practice"...and that's the truth.
The more you work with them the more you become good.
So make your experiments and go with what you feel it's better, trying to improve it time after time.
After brightness/contrast you can also play with "color balance" and "hue/saturation" commands which are VERY powerful to obtain colors like you want.
NOTE: picture brightness/contrast also depends on your pc screen calibration, so be sure it is correct ;)
Rendering/presentation styles: no problem, trying different styles is correct, so you will be able to find your own way and you can shift through diff styles easily.

Thanks for that advice Pietro. I actually used the hue/saturation function to render the regional colors for this shoe. It's very powerful and easy to use.
Anyways I'll keep your advice in mind and hopefully it will help get my renderings to the level I'd like them to be at. |

Damn, sorry to hear that Ryan, that was a really nice shoe you did. Ben really nice stuff, opne thing that bothers my eyes are the angles of the little strp pieces or I dont know what to call em on the heelpiece, maybe make the angle a bit different or make the line a bit more curved. Other then that sick job on that design. Hands down, if we compare it to your age, man I'm jelous. Good work, keep it up! |

Anyway I hope things will change in China...the other day they have executed (!) the minister of economy due to a corruption case regarding imitating products...I'm totally against capital punishment, but they seem to start to take care of companies knocking off everything from westerrn countries...we will see...
Thomas: I've saved my own Qyordan (the name was something like that...i believe it is the chinese translation of "Jordan") knock off on my home pc, so I could have saved even yours. Have you tried to look for the pictures here on Kicksguide? maybe in the first "general discussion" topic.

Pretty sad that its most chinese companies who do this. while allot of chinese people, are good designers. Sad there are bad designers/companies who steels designs stuff.
Too bad allot of beginning design student think its best too copy design.
I've been making skins and mods for a game for few years. I learned myself best way to make skins , but allot beginning skinner take my skins for base and edit small things and say they made it.
I really hate it when someone steals design and I will never steal, cause I know how hard it is for designers to make things. To bad allot of beginners think is easy to edit stuff instead of begin from a clean sheet. |

It depends from where you look at it.
first of: it is a chance for you all to see what a drawing on a web site can magically become a product, and the one who drew it, can claim it put some picture in a portfolio....etc... it offers a plus, as somebody considered your idea as a marketing value. the bad point is you didn't have a chance to experience the development of your idea, all the steps u should take from a rendering to a product etc....
second point, If you dont want to be ripped off, then challenge yourself with a more futuristic, difficult to build, piece of footwear and then you will see their impossibility to copy.
I am not wondering why this shoe instead of this other shoe is been knocked off, and it won't stop it until you all stop drawing simple hoops shoes the way they have been built for the last 35 years, I mean an upper over a mid sole over an outsole with whatever plastic thing in between....
I would take this opportunity here to question completely the footwear, something nobody knows how to build it or something that will take these clever copy cats4 years to release it.....that means never.
with that written, I hope i have offended nobody's sensibility this time...........

I donno if it is possible to design a shoe that can not be made, cause mostly if its can not be made it would be a bad design actually.
And if you do design a total new closing mechanism or any new tech probably not the smartest to send in here. Cause they can easily steal it, but best to get a patent for it so you get legal protection. But its very expensive to get a patent.
Probly still best to stick with velcro, laces and other kind of fastners. I can't think would be possible to design a shoe that cant be made. |

your point of view is very interesting and challenging...but...imagine i have a revolutionary idea for making a shoe completely out of carbon fibre or an idea to create smart studs for soccer boots, well, i will never post them here or in other sites.
If i have an idea for a new type of construction, feasible in 5-10 years from now I think I will not post it here.
I think a lot of persons have eyes wide open on here and it's too "easy" to take inspiration from fresh minds.
On the other side I believe this site is a big aid for young designers willing to improve their skills. But you have to know that for getting exposure you risk that your ideas could be used from greedy people.
I also would like to move the discussion on a different theme now.

Best designer in best companies to see their design dropped, while the "retro it all" movement is gaining more and more yards...in the name of pure PROFIT...
In 2003 Tinker Hatfield have said (see Crooked Tongues interview) that at that time it was almost impossible to create new and inovative products having to go through so many hurdles (marketing groups, regional groups...)...his most successful and inovative designs were created putting the ear to the ground and listening to the heart beat of different cultures, countries, neighbourhoods...it was impossible to do that in 2003, imagine today!
To me is a huge shame to see such a big amount of talent (my friend designers own tons of that) so under-employed by companies.
I would like to listen to other voices...Am I the only fool perceiving this???

I understand where you're coming from, Pietro, but I don't agree.
Tinker delivered gound-breaking shoe design at a time when the footwear industry was primed for it. The stars were aligned... The fitness craze/industry was booming, Nike Air was young, and PU and EVA foams were new shoe manufacturing mediums. And there was still a very clear line between fashion and performance footwear, which was swiftly obliterated by Nike.
That environment can never be recreated. It's gone. It's extremely difficult to make anything other than small incremental improvements in footwear technology anymore. So the change-craving market has to rely more on fashion elements than technology. And fashion, being the circular cycle that it is, is going to deliver "retro" trends.
FOOTWEAR DESIGN IS NOT DEAD and it never will be. It's just going through a period that looks a bit gloomy from your/our vantage point. We have a strong bent toward hoop shoes here. Hi-tops for casual wear is nowhere near as popular as it used to be. And though it may never be as strong as it once was, it will likely be stronger in the future.
But if you're a running shoe designer at Asics, Brooks or Mizuno, or if you worked for Puma, you'd laugh your a$$ off at the notion of footwear design being dead.
I know you typed that line as much for shock value as anything else. But it does open an interesting discussion. |

Interesting discussion guys!
Yes, the exciting athletic market that we once knew is now gone. Being a part of sport culture is now more of a commonality than the movement it once was. Leading performance footwear companies are scratching their heads as their hoops and running shoe sales plummet despite many efforts to revive it. The bottom line, as Ryan said, is that "tech" is not fashionable for everyday so much anymore. People got played out after years of this dominating and are looking for something else. The problem is, nobody know WHAT that something else is, so we'll continue to see nonsensical material and colorway "exclusives" until this fad exhausts itself and SOMEBODY has the balls to step up with the next "IN" thing. I don't think anyone will be able to foresee what this "thing" will be- it will just happen magically as Jordan's partnership with Nike.
What saddens me is that BALLS used to determine who was on top and why they were the ones people followed. Nike specifically has now fallen into the trap of FOLLOWING half a$$ companies that deal in trendiness and has left their pride in innovation behind. It seems that the corporate monster they have become as a result of their years of dominance has now left them trapped inside of their own box. They have stood by "performance only" for so long, that once loyal customers now feel cheated by their inability to evolve in any way except by following the current fads to hold market share and selling out on all they stood for to keep dollars coming in. I am talking about Nike/Jordan in particular because of my own feelings for the company AND the fact that they have become the very benchmark by which footwear sales and design is measured.
Granted, the methods by which shoes are made are actually very old, and as Ryan said, difficult to change to say the least. And perhaps a solution to THAT will bring the change. It seems strange though that they haven't experimented with some new and innovative footwear SOLUTIONS for today's society that aren't necessarily sport-related. Just life-related! This applies to all companies I suppose. How come nobody can design a comfortable casual shoe for the blue-collar worker that looks cool and feels good? You can't tell me there's no customer for that! I used to be on my feet walking hard for 11 hours a day. My soles were falling off in 2 weeks and I wasn't allowed to wear athletic shoes. Or what about a casual shoe that just works better with the foot than an Air Force one and has a completely different language than anything we've seen? Anyone seen a snowboarding/ski boot you can walk in without feeling like Frankenstein?

It's a very disheartening time. I hope all of you guys can stay passionate about FOOTWEAR design in general and not just hoops, because the climate is changing and it would be a hell of a waste of talent to box yourselves in. Use your love for hoops shoes to carry you over and find that same love for designing creative solutions to other activities. What do people do? How can the shoe they wear make it better? It's great that we have this forum to share our ideas and thoughts. I like what KG has done in branching out in terms of the contest themes. These are the little things that are creating the next evolution, even though we may not see it now. It's going to be a long haul, my friends but everything comes full circle. Tech WILL make a return, just not in the way you remember it. Be an artist and make the foot better with your creative talents.Keep the faith strong and your minds open! We are the future!

OK Ryan, if you want to properly tell it, it's not a death case...but a DEEP COMA...;)
I live far from the biz and I believe my perspective is almost the same I have had in years, only a bit deeper, so I think my perception is quite correct.
For sure until the passion will be burning inside designers hearts all over the world footwear design will never die!!!
But there are no signals of a trend change and I have to say that in todays market both top range and mid range shoes lack of some creativity.
Sometimes low priced shoes look more interesting than the higher priced one, which shows how much the hurdles for designers become higher and higher when expectations arise.
If you look at upcoming releases, not just nike or jordan, but adidas, reebok...you can see design is stagnating...they have designers 10 times better than me and amazing resources...how is it possible?
I agree with you about Tinker initial designs...everything had to be created, there was room for revolutionize the footwear world.
But HIS words (check interview in Crooked Tongues website, you have to register first) were latter, he was talking of 2003...if it was difficult for him (having such a huge background and personality) to make marketing /managing people accept his ideas imagine an average Joe coming from whatsoever part of the world.
My provocation is kind of a wake up call, and not ato criticise designers for sure.
I'd like to see what people think, I'd like to get other designers involved into this.

the future, obviously is not written, its a consequence.
the situation in the market today, what Pietro calls the frozen creativity (stagnation) isn't due to the lack of talent and commitment, its is due to the objective set by the share holders and the attempt to quantify every little corner of our industry. every shoe should pay back.
nobody can quantify the creativity, the emotion, the smart idea, THE THING that will make a precedent.
Marketing can quantify, with the power of numbers, the philosophy dripping from it the strategies the formulas......etc
but i am positive, because too much of something creates one day its opposite, because human being hasn't changed...

back to your comments Johnny and Pietro, what kind of feedback are you looking for?? the lines of your shoes are beautiful?? what a color blocking?? whoaoo u added a new piece of carbon nice perforations, nice rendering beautiful little window.....I don't think so.
Unfortunately, the position I am in today, doesn't allow myself to post anything more than words, and this carefully, in order to avoid any conflict or non-intentional disclosure.
In the meantime, i have hundreds of ideas like you guys that haven't hit the market still, why? because it is partly frozen.
these ideas might be too old one day...we will be gone one day.
here is the choice: either i am designing shoe with my parents technology (35 years old), either i challenge the most i can my community by producing the "unseen" here or at work
guess what, u might not get money for inspiring copy cats in and out, but you can claim and prove you were the first..... in short either you are the ones who shake the tree either you are the ones waiting for the fruits.

Guys, that's only ,midnight Pacific time....it's not that serious. LOL. KG's site posts all times as Eastern. I am somewhat of a night owl though. That's when my mind works the best: When the rest of society has gone to sleep and there is unforced peace and calm around me. It's like thinking in outerspace ;)
Bruno: I will admit that it can be hard for me to follow your English, but I think I get the gyst of what you are saying. In some ways, CREATIVITY ITSELF used to BE the precedent. People gravitated toward it and embraced it. They were excited by it as I have always been and I am not sure why it has changed for them. But now, sadly, society is composed of billions of sheep who seemingly favor rehashed trends and forced "uniqueness". Or is it that they are making that choice because that is all they have to choose from when they look at a wall of shoes? Which came first? the chicken or the egg? I suppose it goes against the natural laws of marketing and capitalism to have some Balls and put something FRESH and UNPROVEN on that wall to see if it works. But that is not a guaranteed dollar, so nevermind. I think Puma is one of only a few companies doing it. Thank you, Puma. But, in the same Token, I doubt it's translating to big dollars which will probably make it short-lived.
We will undoubtedly look back at this confused time much as we do the 80's and wonder what the hell we were thinking. Neon green crocskin and pink velvet shoes?! "What was I wearing?!!"
But let's not forget what the 80's eventually brought us: The 90's.
Everything happens for a reason. I think we are in a transition focused on materials and graphics that will eventually merge back with tech and bring us some unprecented, and beautiful product that could not have existed before due to the closed mind on fashion from the sporting goods industry. Eventually it will make sense.

I haven't been on here in a while, but I had to weigh in on this one. I feel that we as a society are not satisfied with what we have. We live in a society of instant gratification, but that gratification only lasts for a minute. I feel that some designers (not all) are pressed by owners, marketing annalists, and corporate drones to produce on an unprecedented level. They are run like slaves to try to come up with the next big thing that will make them their next dollar, not the next big thing that is going to be a technological wonder or an artistic masterpiece. If you look at the number of products released today and the frequency in which they are released, it has grown at an exponential rate when compared to 10, 20, even 30 years ago. They have flooded the market with half a$$ed ideas just to rush to get the next item out before their competitors so they can keep growing. If they don't grow in profit, their company shows a loss, their stocks drop, investors sell out, they lose money, and then they fire people because it was "their" design that was the problem. It most times is always about money, and that is not a bad thing. We all want to make money. The problem is when it becomes nothing more than about just money and not about a design that impresses people now, and will impress them through out time. I know that a lot of this is out of designers’ control. Designers don't design because we think that "hey this is a piece of crap, quality wise and artistically, but its what the marketing people said they needed; something different than the product we released two weeks ago, because its lost its now-ness, and we have to grow our company, because the $250 billion dollars we made last year was 2% less than the 10% growth we projected." |

But hey, this is just my opinion. And please don't get me wrong, not all companies are like this, but I feel a good number of them are. I do feel that the market is in stagnation, but I don't feel it is the designers’ faults. There are a great number of factors that have contributed to this stagnation, some of which I stated above.

William the key to a good footwear portfolio is to be able to show your thought process that lead up the final design. As an example..look at Tony Hardmans Jordan submission and you will see what it takes to create a very nice, effect and more importantly professional presentation. One other key thing is for you to truly understand what you have put down on paper and be able to either defend it or find an alternative when asked by the interviewer. |

I have a uni assignment/folio at the moment, which pretty much involves designing some sort of electrical device that aids in a sport, it can help a player, coach, spectator, umpire/ref in either training and/or competition or even just messing around non-competitively. Or even as a health monitor or rehibilhtaion device..
i would like to do something shoe related, as shoes are one of my passions and i know a lot abotut them thus reducing research time... but i am not forcing myself to, so if anyone has anything else please tell me
however it can be for any sport, even something as obscure as chess, or croquet.
i was just wondering if anyone has been doing a sport and thought "it would be really useful if i had a ..... now" or if anyone has any ideas that would really help a sport.
something like the nike+ kit, where the shoe can link to an ipod to motivate as well as track run distances, calerioes, speeds etc really helps promote running and gives great feedback.
it is a tough one because i dont want anything that gives a major advantage, ie shoes that make you jump higher in bball or anything that cheats the sport or makes a skill in the sport redundant!
if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
