General Discussion
Okay, I've thought for quite a while that it would be a good idea to start a general discussion post here. This is where we can cover a slightly wider range of topics and allow the Artist Series threads to remain focused on the respective competitions and not wander of "chasing rabbits". Come on in for the simple ground rules...

i'm with you on the no deadstocks, christopher. it's hard not to wear or play in any of them. that's what they're made for. i clean 'em with a toothbrush and dilluted dish soap. and i keep the boxes. lets see how this goes:

air jordan xi low ('00, white/red patent)
air jordan xiii (o.g., white/black/red)
air jordan viii (o.g., black/red/white)
air jordan xvi low (black/chrome)
air jordan v retro ('00, wht/blk/fire red)
lebron 2 (grey/royal/white)
air trainer high sc (obsidian/white)
dunk lo (black/red plaid)
air signature player (black)
air jet flight (black/zinc)
zoom flight turbine (navy/silver)
air blacksburg (black)
air max '97 (silver/lime)
nike free trail (black/purple)
air jaq (black/grey/white)
adidas attitude (wht/blue/blk)
adidas forum supreme (wht/red)
adidas stan smith (wht/fairway)
reebok pump fury (JPE)
ice cream boardflip (tan/brown/pink)

and some random vans, nikes and pumas and adidas. off the top of my head. damn. i've never actually written them down. this is since like '97...i know this isn't a whizzing contest, but angelo asked. if i only i had more cash...

Nice Li-Nings, the first ones real nice reminds me of a pair of Nike's I have. The secound one does look like a T-MAc. The third one seems interesting with the ankle strap. Like that one too, has good ideas and nice colourway and they're all relatively cheap. Angelo, I only ggot into this whole "sneakerhead" thing maybe a year ago, not even. SO I dont have that many kicks. Wear them all, pretty much:
AJ 14 white/forest green
AJ 20 East(my favourite J)
AJ 16 OG
AJ 12 OG
Iverson 7,8 and want to pick up the 10
Plus I got a couple of designers Tommy Hilfiger's.
I wear them cause they're shoes, but clean them after each time I wear them usually. For the Jordans even the outsole's sometime.

I've only played in them once, I decided not to use them on the court, only as a casual shoe. Because playin in them really busts them, and I find the 14s the best on the court.

Good job on that one Arpith real nice concept, personally I really like the inspiration and the sketches, but that blue-purple rendering, I don't know... The other colourways ok though. The utsole reminds me too much about the LeBron 4s out sole, or any Nike Free's outsole. But overall seems like a nice marketable shoe. An other thing is the line of the lateral side, by the ankle, is seems unfinished. A question, whats this technology about?

anyone notice the new jordan 22s rear sole portion is very similar to jason petrie's air jordan 1 evolution design??

dunno how to post pics (not a comp whiz).. but just compare the AJ22 pics on niketalk.com with petrie's design on this site...

maybe petrie had some say as to how the AJ22 turned out..

just a thought...

It looks like the knockoff industry took a big hit recently. Shreding all of the products does seem like a huge waste to me though. Can't the materials be reused somehow?

I was at Footlocker yesterday here in Vienna and i checked out the T-MAC 6,which is great, i love it, the design and the whole technical part of the new outsole.

If i couold choose between the Zoom Lebron 4 and the new T-MAC, I´d definitly go with adidas!
The shoes has been manufactured perfactly!

i guess you could look at it look that, it might bring some happiness to some for a lil' while and maybe that in and of itself is enough to make it worth doing but from their perspective one might say handing them shoes amidst all they lack might be insulting; not having sneakers is the least of their worries...think about it you are hungry, you do not have adequate shelter, or clean water to drink, or make enough money to feed your family, and some (knockoff) shoes are going to cause them to jump for joy?

after all, the problems across the globe with inequity & poverty are not going to be solved by nations just dropping off our unwanted goods; just something to think about...

I gotta ask you guys something:

Everytime I´m walking on the street, go shopping or at University I have to look at peoples shoes.
When I see some hot ladies running around I first look at their face and then on their shoe and I think " My god how can such a hot chick run around in those ugly sneaker" or " she looks great in those and they really fit her"

I think shoes just tell you so much about somebody, well maybe it´s just me, but you gotta tell me if you got the same thing

Last week I saw the first girl here in Vienna rocking Air Jordans, she looked really great, but here kickz were even better, she was wearing the XXI, all white with silver. There is nothing better than that:-

Johnny, thanks man, yeah it´s wraps around the lacebed, I´m working on that design right now, since I haven´t had time to do the casual theme design I thought I might as well make my own theme. I chose THE GLOVE !!! Gary Payton, so here´s another sample.

Yeah I´m actually from Bad Aussee, Austria, but I started studying English here in Vienna a couple of month ago, so now I live here too:-)

Yeah been there a couple of times, my Dad has a friend that lives there. I live in BUdapest, it aint far at all. Black yellow yeah those were real nice, although Carmelos and Kobe's PE'S were real nice also. Yeah sure post it up! About the last shoe you posted, I'M not sure if your tryin to create somethin new or just combining the shoes he wore and adding somethin fresh to it. Personally this red white shoe's real nice, but it looks like he 18, 21 and 21PE'S combined into one. But that aint a bad idea to combine the 12s, I think he played in 19s and lets say the Glove. So keep up the good work!:D

Another thing I liked is the nose of the on one of those sketches. Yeah those will be most likely the final J's. Personally I'm impressed real nice on my opinion. One dought is the shape of the outsole under the heel, I'm curious how that's going to preform on the court. There are tons of close pics on kick-fiend.com

JS -- It's is a direct factory sample for Athletic Works, Wal-Mart's own brand. In addition, we also have Starter brand shoes. Starter does about 80 to 90% of their own design. We do the rest, mostly low-end/low-tech.

Many of our shoes, however, are also from "suppliers", none of which you'd recognize by name (they mostly go by initials... LJO, for example). I don't design for suppliers, only direct shoes from factory. But I am involved in the development of the overall line, i.e. the selection process from the vast number of shoes which suppliers send us.

Christoph -- Thanks for your comments. I don't know if they'll still accept your work, but I would just send it anyway. As a general rule for such a situation in life... many times it's better not to ask first. If it's something you want to do anyway, and no-one will get injured or harmed, go for it. You might be surprised how many doors it'll open for you. If you ask first if it's okay, you might be told "no", and have a door shut which might have remained open had you not asked.

Hey, Ryan, it's really nice to see your work. I really appreciate you sharing your design with us.

I think I would go with option 'A', the blue accents sort of frame the shoe, and bring a nice contrast to the dominating white upper. The runner up would have to C, since the blue tone really brings out the contours of the sculpted midsole, whereas the white outsole pods keep the profile from looking too heavy.

Just my 2 kronas.

The shoe will be priced around $14 (Wayne). There is currently a kid shoe at Wal-Mart called the "Charger", which I did not design. This design will be the second version of the Charger, and will hit shelves for back-to-school '07 (late summer).

That is actually the second round of samples. The first sample came back with the older Charger midsole/outsole. That's something we do often. Since opening a new sole mold costs around $2500, it makes more sense to get your upper tweaked to satisfaction, then invest in the sole. Sometimes a decision might be made to discontinue working on a design after seeing just the first sample. If you've yet to open a mold for it, you save $2500.

The first round of samples included two versions. Both were in the black colorway, and the perforated part was synthetic micro-suede. The remaining parts of the upper were patent on one sample, and tumbled "action leather" on the other (action leather is polyurethane-coated leather). Micro-suede shows dirt and dust very badly, even in black. So, since this is a kids shoe, we decided against the buck and changed perfed parts to action leather for the second round of samples, the rest of the shoe in patent.

The second round of samples came in with the new sole. These are what you see in the pictures. The black samples came in first and the white sample, "A", came in about a week later. B, C, & D are Photoshop revisions. By the way, B and D are my favorites, but I've directed the PDM to all of your comments. He'll decide on the colorway.

Thanks for all your opinions. I'm not sure if there's a consensus, but it's been interesting reading.

Wayne, I just went back and noticed your last question about seeing the sample of my first design.

It was a basketball shoe, inspired by the Peugeot 20-Cup. Seeing the 1st sample was an okay experience. Yes, it was exciting, but all the things I DIDN'T like about it were screaming at me. Of course it's funny to me now...

First of all, the factory used an existing stock midsole, and I didn't know they were going to do that, or why they'd done it until someone explained it to me. I didn't like the way the leather looked either, among other things. We got the problems worked out---changed the leather from smooth to tumbled, adjusted the piecing, tweaked the outsole, etc. It has turned out to be a pretty nice shoe, considering it will sell for around $18. It'll be on the shelf for spring---I think late February or early March.

Here's a photo of its inspiration, the Peugeot 20-Cup. But don't get too built up. It's not a fancy shoe at all. It's very sleek and practical.

Ryan: boooooooooooooo! action leather...oh my...i'm surprised I haven't had any nightmares about that stuff. wait, action is real leather? I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. We handle the samples the same way for the most part...they don't really open up too many molds.

lol. the factories will take liberties and cut corners if u let them but it's understandable.

I'm struggling with materials and duty rates... and all that other stuff...is there a book that I could get? nobody has really broken it down for me. books in general..doesn't have to be about materials.

if you get a chance (and have permission), please post that peugeot shoe..I would love to see it.

thanks for the response...haven't checked this site as much as I used to...trying to get back in the swing

Hi Ryan!!!

Nice to see your stuff...in the making...
The design is simple but clean.

I have two questions:
1) How the costs have been lowered changing upper that way?...use of smaller leather pieces?
2) Why the heel counter is so vertical? A smoother-ronded-heel bone shaped heel counter would also have been better for looks making the shoe faster.

Thanks for sharing ;)

Pietro -- Answers to your questions...

1) Yes, smaller pieces allow for a different pattern placement/less leather waste.

2) The last dictated the look of the heel. It passed fit tests. I understand what your saying, but such a change would have altered a fit which was already good.
__________

Wayne, I'm not familiar with any such book, but I hear our PDMs discussing those details frequently. They could write a book I'm sure.

Wayne, I see what you're saying about the sole and the lean-back. Again, I have to point to the last. It was tried on by several people with size 9 feet. I'll be getting a pair in both my possible sizes (12 or 13) within the next couple days. I plan to try them out on the court and will let you know my thoughts.

How do I feel about them? I've boiled it down to this... Designing shoes for Wal-Mart sometimes forces you to churn out designs a little faster than you'd prefer. Tony Hardman is in a similar situation at Sketchers---high volume. Sometimes a design doesn't get the attention it might ideally need. But you do the best you can, and in the end, like it or not, it's a piece of you. It's like extended family... you really like some, you just tolerate others, but you love them all, because they're family.

I'm getting better though... faster thinker, faster drawer, faster designer. After six months designing shoes full time, I can say that I feel much better letting go of a completed shoe now than I did early on. I've also learned it's better to turn in 3 well-done designs than 5 rushed ones.

Basically if a shoe is more than 50% black in overall color, it's a black shoe. And if a shoe is more than 50% white in overall color, it's a white shoe. A team has to be unified in the shoe color they wear. Trim color can vary, as long as it's a team color.

nice scratches, johnny...the one below the colored one on the first of the two postings has a lot of potential, at least the bottom of the upper. the strap on the one to the right of the colored one in that page looks like it could be combined with the first i mentioned. damn, that's kind of hard to follow...but overall, they're nice starting points.

sorry about the size, was actually supposed to be small!

[Edit... Christoph, images post at a standard size of 400 pixels wide on this board. I adjusted your spinning jumpman to its actual size. Just remember how it works next time. ;) -- Mod.]

i don´t know if the strap could be functional, but i like the black mamba from J.S. i also like the way swoosh goes into the outsole, but maybe they need something there (about support). keep working on it, i also think it has some potential!
