I started working on this month's theme but I then decided against submitting. I suppose this is my retire. Anyhow, here is some of what I did so far, perhaps someone will find inspiration in the image.

Karabo: Is it necessary to spend hours rendering with pencils? hmmm...I don't really have a good answer for you...for myself, I would say no but others may say something else. Spend time with variously techniques...eventually you will have your answer as to which is "best".
Thomas: no. nothing has happened unfortunately. I just think it makes more sense for me to focus on my portfolio(which I haven't even started). I enjoy these contests but I don't think I can progress the way I want to if I continue with them. I don't know man...most of the original NT alum has either landed a job or disappeared...but I'm still here..waiting to be discovered? lol. That has to stop. Wish me luck. |

Wayne: I think you are making a good decision. The boundaries and time limits that KG is putting on your projects is keeping you from going all the way (with your concepts) IMO. However, if I were you, I would take some of the things you have posted on this site and develop them individually into more finished works. Many of them are already nice foundations for you to work off of rather than starting from scratch. Perhaps you can even use some of the feedback you recieved to change directions or improve them with your own perspective. You have been doing this a long time, and if you have the patience, I feel like your time will come soon. If you need anything let me know. Best of luck! -TH |

karabo, the sketch is good, i think you understand what you want to do, the only thing that stick out to me is design intent. what i mean is that some things are not really clearly defined, which is cool for a sketch but it can be good to start to indcate a lil' higher level of detail so not only if/when you look at this sketch next week you still no what in the world you were thinking about that design when you initially thought it up but another person can put it toghether want you are doing...
"I want to know if it is necessary to spend hours rendering with pencils? or just do couple of sketches"
i say a combination of both, because depending on your audience each can be necessary. the sketches are for yourself (and possibly other designers) while you "figuring" what you want/need to accomplish. the "pretty" stuff is really imo to further get your point across with an accurate (or somewhat stylized) representation of the design for clarity of and/or add some additional qualities. plus it gives you the "mileage" necessary to gain more confidence in your abilities...
say it ain't so, wayne...but you have to do what you feel is necessary. i think you could participate but instead of looking at the theme as the culmination, you could approach it as the starting point?
"However, if I were you, I would take some of the things you have posted on this site and develop them individually into more finished works. Many of them are already nice foundations for you to work off of rather than starting from scratch. sounds like a good plan...

My work so far. I abandoned the motorcycle idea (see page 1) and went with a theme that was everywhere about a month ago. DaVinci. This shoe was inspired by his work entitled "Vitruvian Man". The straps symbolize the arms and legs and the "flap" represents the circle around the man. The shoe utelizes Air Max 360 for cushioning. The flap can be replaced and will be offered in different colors to specialize it for the consumer. Any thought??

Karabo, nice sketch overall. The proportion is there, and I think U have some nice thing's going on.
Not knowing your background, but I would say spend some time really looking at how athletic shoes are constructed. This helps us understand the different components and how the molds and such fit together.
I like the character of your signature, maybe you could translate some of that feel into the sketch. |

Wayne -- I totally agree with what Tony said about developing some of your past designs. Perhaps, however, you need not declare your retirement from KG Artist Series, but simply compete when you can, and when you can't don't sweat it. There have been many months during which I started a design for KGAS, only to have life interfere with the time it took to finish the design, so I didn't compete and didn't worry about it. I would suggest just take it month by month. Sometime you might get a great idea very early on and have plenty time to fully develop it. That being said, I think it's important to acknowledge that designing a shoe for your portfolio (to be seen by industry professionals) can be quite different than designing a shoe to win KGAS (where flashy presentation and a polished rendering can score well if with a not so great design). So I guess that's another point of agreement I share with Tony... Your portfolio will certainly benifit from you concentrating exclusively on your portfolio.
Wayne, I am definitely available for feedback on your designs if you want it. Get focused and get it done! We're all pulling for you. |

On this point : "That being said, I think it's important to acknowledge that designing a shoe for your portfolio (to be seen by industry professionals) can be quite different than designing a shoe to win KGAS "
I've recently showed my portfolio for an interview with a french athletic brand, for a footwear designer job, (that's why i won't compete for this month, i was refreshing my portfolio) and they were very enthousiast when they've seen all the projects that i've done for KGAS. I think these projects have made the decision for my future hiring.
So the projects done for KGAS, could be a good input in a portfolio, to show a creative side of a personality or your knowledge in terms of footwear materials (especially for junior-rookie job). It's sure it may need technical drawings or sketches to show that you understand how a product is manufactured. (I've said that for Wayne (but i think he already knows these details) or for others guys here)
Wayne, i really think you deserve to find a job in the footwear business, each of your submissions prove it, and i hope it'll come soon ! |

Karabo: I would say, just work on finishing off the edges. The shapes look like the color just comes to an end. Adding a bit more shading and highlighting around the toe and heel will help give your shoe more of a rounded look. |

Everyone - I just wanted to post my submission for last months them, Lebron VS Kobe. I wanted to get some feed back and see what everyone thinks. The inspiration is pretty self explanatory. I have had this idea since the first Kobe's came out. I would have named his first shoe the Obi 1 Kobe's. This theme gave me the opportunity to design my own Obi 1 Kobe's, the Jumphi Master. As with Kobe, King James became Darth James, lord of the Slam. I just really wanted to have fun with this one. I designed Lebron's shoe after the mask of Darth Vader and Kobe's shoe after Obi Wan Kenobi's robe. The air pads are colored to match each ones light saber. What better rival to use as inspiration than this? May the Force be with you.
Thanks for any comments.

I RENDERED IT LATER IN PRISMA BUT I WANTED A LEATHER PATTERN SO I TRYED IN PHOTOSHOP BUT NEVER GOT THE PERFECT MATCH FOR THE SOLE. TO MAKE A PERSONAL COMMENT: I HAVE BEEN DESIGNING FOOTWEAR SINCE THE 6TH GRADE IT HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE HOBBIE I AM JUST HAPPY THAT I CAN FINALLY SHARE MY DESIGNS TO A LARGER AUDIENCE. TO COMMENT ON INDUSTRY : TO BE HONEST I FEEL THAT THEY HAVE LET US DOWN I DONT THINK THAT THEY WORK AS HARD ON THE DESIGNS OF THESE SHOES AS THEY SHOULD. THEY JUST PUT A NAME ON THEM AN EXPECT IT TO SELL. ALTHOUGH THEY DO MOST OF THE TIME I JUST WISH IT WAS LIKE BEFORE WHEN I WOULD GO TO THE MALL AND BE UNDECIDED ON WHAT TO GET BECAUSE EVERYTHING WAS DESIGNED SO WELL. THE INDUSTRY HAS CREATED A LOVE OF MONEY AND NOT CREATIVITY. I RARELY BUY SHOES NOW BECAUSE THE SELECTION IS SO UNDESIRABLE THAT IT WOULD LOWER ME TO SPEND MY MONEY ON "THAT". MY COMMENT ON FELLOW DESIGNERS: I AM A STRONG BELIEVER IN THE MOLDING OF A DESIGNER IT TOOK ME TIME TO BE GOOD AND I AM STILL NOT WHER I WANT TO BE NOR ARE MOST OF THE DESIGNERS HERE. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS AND CRITQUES ARE THE BEST WAY TO HELP A DESIGNER (WITHOUT TEACHING THEM) BECOME BETTER THE MORE YOU GIVE THE MORE YOU WILL GET OR LEARN SO I JUST SAY DO YOUR BEST AND NEXT MONTH DO BETTER. ///THAT IS ALL/// |

JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW I DESIGN MY OWN LINE OF SHOES FOR MYSELF (NO COMPANY) AN BEING THIS WAY I HAVE MY OWN LOGO AND TRADEMARKS. AND SINCE I AM LIKE THIS I FEEL THAT EVERY OTHER COMPANY OUT THERE IS MY COMPETITION SO I FIND IT VERY HARD TO PUT ANOTHER COMPANYS LOGO OR SYMBOL ON MY DESIGNS SO I DONT DO IT (ALTHOUGH I MAY HAVE TO FOR THE JORDAN XXII THEME). SO DONT LOOK FOR ANY IF I CAN AVOID IT I WILL. I FEEL THAT I DESIGN WELL ENOUGH TO CREATE A DESIGN THAT LOOKS GOOD WITHOUT THERE SYMBOLS. BUT IF I GET HIRED INTO A COMPANY ALL THAT WILL CHANGE BUT UNTIL THEN //I WILL NOT LET ANY COMPANY OUT DO ME// "NIKE" FOOTWEAR DESIGN IS A WAR OF IDEAS AND TECHNOLOGY AND THE COMPANY WITH THE BEST DESIGNERS WIN. BEING SO EVERYONE HERE HAS A GREAT BATTLE IN FRONT OF THEM IT IS UP TO YOU HOW THE OUTCOME WILL TURN OUT. FOR ME I PLAN TO WIN. |
chris carraway (125 )
| 9:15:00 PM Monday, June 26, 2006
OK PAUL I WILL POST IT IN A MIN. PLEASE NOTE THAT I DID NOT CREATE A BACKGROUND NOR IS THERE A NIKE OR AN ADIDAS SYMBOL ON THEM I IS JUST A QUICK DESIGN I DID THAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. BUT I FEEL THAT IT IS STILL GOOD AND IT WOULD SELL. IT HAS AN ADIDAS FEEL BUT A NIKE STYLE I FELT THE MIX OF THE TWO WOULD BE BEST. |

THIS DESIGN CAN BE MODIFIED IN MANY COLOR-WAYS THATS WHAT I LIKE. Everyone - Please comment on my designs posted earlier, I really would love some feed back. I mad the March Madness competition, but haven't qualified since. I would love some advice and words of encouragement. I have been kind of discouraged. I felt like my work has improved dramatically since my first qualifying design, but I have made the last two comps. I am just looking for any words of wisdom that may help me get better and bring my hopes back up. I didn't have time for the Jordan comp, but I will definitely have a design for the Wade competition. Thanks for any advice, comments, encouragement, etc.

Yo Chris: I feel ya man, but one thing I have learned here is that its more than just about winning. Its the feedback you get from your peers. Yes its nice to be a finalist and even win a few of these KGAS', but take Mark Miner for example. He didnt win one comp. He was , I think, a finalist with the LeBron theme, but now hes working at Adidas. That my friend is the ultimate victory :) So show us what you got. love the bravado, just hope your designs can back it up, but if you do stumble dont worry. You have lots of people here that can show you the way.
