2006 Artist Series Contest (January): Apple IPOD Nano
The year starts off with another off topic inspiration. Many of you have received cool Christmas gifts this Holiday Season. One of the most popular gadgets on the market is the Apple IPOD Nano. In terms of design, function and styling, the IPOD is as good as they come. The new Nano offers super thin and lightweight design. Using that as your inspiration, design an ultra lightweight performance basketball shoe.

Thanks Dallas!!!

I don't know about Apple brand...I think i will stay with shoes (not a top brand though...), apple logo is even more powerful than JB or Nike. So I don't know.

Matt: Welcome man!!! I think the link for submission is not still displayed, but it should be submissions@kicksguide.com. You have to send there your design before the 31th January deadline . You also need to send a short description (if you want)and your complete Name and Surname. The pic must be a jpeg smaller than 200Kb and maximum size is 800x600 pixels.
I think that's all you need to know...

GUYS DONT GET ME WRONG!!! THERES NOYHING WRONG WITH USING A EXISTING COMPANY AND THEIR STUFF.HOWEVER IF APPLE CALLED ANY OF YOU TOMMOROW AND WANTED TO HIRE YOU TO START DESIGNING FOR A MULTI MILLION DOLLAR SHOE DIVISION OF APPLE.YOU WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO USE A JUMPMAN,HEXALITE,AIRBAG,PUMP,ZOOM UNIT,OR TORSION BAR. THE KG ADMIN DID NOT ASK YOU GUYS TO DO A AIR ZOOM IPOD NANO. THEY ASKED TO DO AN IPOD NANO SHOE. STOP THINKING ABOUT TRYING TO IMPRESS CERTAIN COMPANIES.I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT MORE PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN HIRED OFF THIS SITE WHILE DRAWING NOTHING BUT NIKE STUFF WERE HIRED,BUT NOT BY NIKE. CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG BUT ONLY TWO GUYS MADE IT TO NIKE FROM HERE AND ONLY ONE DREW ALLOT OF NIKE PRODUCTS. GUYS YOU CAN IMPRESS A COMPANY MORE BY SHOWING HOW WELL YOU CAN WORK WITH ANY PROJECT RATHER THAN JUST RELYING ON A LOGO TO SAVE YOU. MAKE YOUR WORK EARN A LOGO DONT MAKE A LOGO MAKE YOUR WORK.

DALLAS: my thought was, who is the "apple" of footwear world? Who's got technology and knowledge but is kinda in a parallel dimension from Nike/Jordan?
Ok, they are just like me (and even you, maybe...)...endorsed by nobody!!! If you know who I'm talking about!

Though, I'm still undecided, Apple is too cool :)

Ade-

really like the energy in your line work. what are some of your thoughts on them? what were you trying to accomplish..or details? I would push the sketch in the lower left with the apple logo in the toe guard and with the circle- maybe try vaird scales of that circle on the shoe. also circle treatments/ maybe some are embossed or cut out or molds..etc. I also like the form you have above the bart simpson ( nice ) the diagnals on the midsole are dynamic and light how the form flows into the heel- would like to see that explored too.

keep sketching an posting-

time to do some class registration..

thanks for the insight dallas, i got to see these up close right now the reflex and rome are my favorites, when they drop? btw could you ask percy what in the world made him consider being on "dancing with the stars"???

pietro, who would be the apple of the footwear realm? we already know nike is microsoft but who qualifies as a design centered underdog? puma? (you could make the argument that it is jordan brand [minus the retroes of course], but i digress)

thanks mark i wish i could get the volume of ideas out that you continually show, i need to work on focusing. with the sketches not really sure where i was going, just following my pencil and letting my mind wander. i was looking at pics of the ipod family thinking "man are these things CLEAN!!!" i never really noticed just how simple and elegant it is, it is a really difficult challenge for a shoe..

arpith what dallas is getting it at, is that sometimes, logos are used as a crutch to qoute:

"GUYS YOU CAN IMPRESS A COMPANY MORE BY SHOWING HOW WELL YOU CAN WORK WITH ANY PROJECT RATHER THAN JUST RELYING ON A LOGO TO SAVE YOU. MAKE YOUR WORK EARN A LOGO DONT MAKE A LOGO MAKE YOUR WORK."

get to work all!!!

Not to go off-topic, but I think Nike took 2 steps backward with the VC V's styling...what do y'all think?

Dallas: I agree with u..too many nike shoes rely on the swoosh...meaning that without a swoosh, it might not be worth a second glance.

My inspiration from this months theme focused more on the uncomplicated elegance of the ipod. In the end, my design will be a functional product which meets the design reqirements...then again its us that vote for the winner not KG admin.

at the end of the day, no matter what brand or logo is stamped onto the side of a particular shoe, the design will speak for itself. there have been countless nike/JB shoes that i refused to buy simply because i wasn't feeling them. so as shoeheads, we should know a good shoe regardless of what brand it is...yet we're all entitled to our own opinions.

Ian: I, too, have been thinking about the VC line as of late. I think Vince has a preference for the zoom and heel shox combo, which would account for the change from the full length shox as in the VC3. As for the upper being completely lackluster, I can't explain that, although I can offer this guess. Maybe Nike saw Vince's popularity falling off due to his attitude and performance sliding in his last days in Toronto, so they decided to let the line become less "cutting edge" and more available to the average shoe buyer than a shoe with a $150 price point. This would lead them to give Vince's line second priority, become less innovative in the design, and drop the pricing. But, with Vince playing the way he is now, they may need to rethink this strategy. That's just my opinion.

Hi
It's been a while since my last visit but no web access at home :(

For my first shoe project, the theme was a little bit hard, but it was a good challenge.
I see there are cool and complex concept, I chose a little bit simply way, maybe too simple...

And I thx KG to organise so interresting theme !

PS : Is there a presentation topic ? To know who I'm talking to ?

then again, at the end of the day, Vince would have approved the final prototype..so maybe he led the designer(s) to go in that direction.

p.s. however, the combination of forefoot zoom air and 6 shox columns at the rear is brilliant!

Ian: I also have the 3 and 4. I loved my bb4s and picked up the 4 because of the zoom air shox combo. It does indeed feel quite nice on my feet. The styling has fallen off dramatically since the 3.Even though the 3 seemed a bit plain or boot like to some people, it still had a little bit of flash to it. I especially loved the red/black/white pair.

Maybe we shopuld be upset with Vince, not Nike.

wow!! this is the forum i remember!!! now lets just add designs and were back.
ian: i agree we were comming through a dark period in footwear.the last couple of years have been ruff.however!!!! nike is back and passing out catalogs with strait fire!!! the new huraches!!!air zoom kobe 1 !!! the new vicks!!! even reebok has been tossing out some new heat with their pump shoes!!! yes reebok!!! adidas is kinda quiet but i guarantee you that the garnett and the mc grady wont be the only fire they got. so fear not things are gonna be real cool real soon!!! shoes are starting to look good from everyone.im not sure what d got going over at jb but im not worried at all.you guys will see shoes are starting to earn logos for sure. the nike catalog is once again very inspiring and its starting to generate excitement like back in the day!!! i just wish they would cut down on some of the re-releases. i dont mind them but hell i just wish they would do like they do with air force ones and let the athletes color and logo old styles. can you imagine what a lebron james version of the air foamposite or kobes version of air zoom 5 or the amare version of the air max uptempo would look like. im sure those guys owned a pair of thoes.
now the vc... im not a fan of them only because im not into shox. i do think in person the uppers not that bad at all.i do think they are playing it safe with the whole shoe over all. and im real excited to hear the lebron may be going foamposite!!! hopefully they will add windows cause i just played in my blue foamposites and sweat 5 pounds off my feet.
THATS MY TWO CENTS ARNAUD I HOPE THE LOW CASE LETTERS HELPED!!!LOL

i remember jason saying over at niketalk that vince did not like the full length shox setup of the 3s which supposedly is the reason why the switch to the zoom-shox setup of the 4s, as many believed at the time the bombers were originally slated to be vince's sig.

"and im real excited to hear the lebron may be going foamposite!!!"

say word! been waiting on some new foamposites. making it apart of lebrons sig line could maybe absorb the $$$ that it takes to produce em'

So the shoe game seems quite interesting in the close future!!!

I'm also a very happy the prices are quite low these times (in the middle of 90's we had many 150$ shoes around, now the average of top shoe is around 125!)

Only exception are Air Jordan that at 175 seems to me quite off da hook...ok they are the ferraris of footwear, but basically it's not the same as a car with 600hp compared with one with just 300(2k5 at 130$ are 45$ below, it's an half shoe-pair!!!!)...I mean you should always be able to ball in them...not just put them under glass to show them to your friend!
Beside that I can say I like the look of the shoe especially in the white/black/uni-blue cw (check Niketalk topic). I think D'Wayne did a good job with those and the inter-changeable heel cartridge is cool and I think useful at the same time!

About the VC line I can say I had the IV, they were quite good to me. the only thing that made me crazy was the upper design that forced me to re-tighten my laces hundreds times since I like the upper glued to my feet and hate internal chafing and slidings.
Style-material wise they were a step (or two) below excellence, but I think the forefoot zoom/heel shox6 combination is a big part of the 110$ cost. So the upper need to be really basic.

Hope to be able to make some sketching for the Ipod shoe soon!!!

Oh, Ade, it's not nike, Jordan, adidas, Reebok or Puma...I've said Endorsed by Nobody...is it clear now?

Ian: nice start. One thing I found a bit bothersome ( to me atleast ) is that it seems as if the front 3/4th view is drawn a bit off centered. Also the 23 seed-shaped perfs are a bit much, especially since this is an ipod theme not necessarily a Jordan one. Maybe getting rid of all the perfs except maybe the one on the toe box, might make the shoe appear cleaner. Just a few things I can think of for now. Cheers

PIETRO: DONT SWEAT IT MAN. MOST PEOPLE THAT YOU MAY HAVE CONTACT WITH IN THE INDUSTRY MAY NOT BE CONTACTING YOU FOR MORE REASONS THAN YOU KNOW. ITS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT WHAT YOU MAY HAVE DOON WRONG.HERE ARE A FEW REASONS:
1. WERE VERY BUSY.YOU WOULDNT BELEIVE HOW MANY HOURS WE CAN END UP SPENDING IN A SEASON AT THE OFFICE.THEN HAVE TO GO HOME AND TRY TO GIVE OUR FAMILIES LOVE BEFORE WERE SHIPPED OFF TO CHINA.
2.WERE ALWAYS TRAVELING AND COME HOME TO A GAZILLION EMAILS.YOU WOULDNT BELEIVE HOW IF YOURE NOT AROUND FOR ONE DAY AND 2 SIMPLE QUESTIONS GO UNANSWERED IT CAN TURN INTO A BUNCH OF LITTLE PROBLEMS OVER ONE SHOE.
3.THEY ARE FAKE AND HAVE NO JUICE.SOME GUYS TALK ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE BUT ARE SO SCARED ABOUT BEING REPLACED BY SOME NEW TALENT THAT THEY JUST LIE AND PLAY GOD. OTHER TIMES IF YOU DONT GO THROUGH THE PROPER CHANELS LIKE LISA OLIVIA, HEAD OF RECRUITING AT NIKE OR JAMES CARNES HEAD OF DESIGN AT ADIDAS,OR LORI CUTLER HEAD OF H.R. AT SKECHERS, YOUR RUNNING IN CIRCLES. PEOPLE ARE IN PLACE TO HELP YOU JUST MAKE SOME CALLS TO EACH COMPANIES H.R. DEPT.AND FIND OUT WHO TO SPEAK TO.THEN IF YOU HAVE SOMEONE IN HIGH PLACES THAT CAN PUT A GOOD WORD IN FOR YOU YOU ARE DOIN WELL.
4.THE POINT IM TRYIN TO MAKE IS EVEN IF YOU MAKE IT EVERYMOVE MADE IN THIS BUISNESS IS NEVER OVERNITE OR TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS IT WILL CRUMBLE ALL DOWN AROUND YOU.KEEP SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT PEOPLE AND PROCEEDURES AND YOU WILL MAKE IT SOONER BUT PROBABLY LATER.

DALLAS: You speak the truth my man. I have been through all that already. I have even been in contact with Lisa Olivia, and she really shoved the reality of the business in my face. She told me basically, but in different words, that I.D. is definately the way to go. She said that Nike recruits from the top I.D. schools in the USA and Europe, not to mention other companies. All this recruiting is for only 2 base designer openings a year. So, me without an I.D. degree, I have a graphic design degree,I was pretty much outta luck there. The advice she gave me is to break in with a smaller company to gain experience, which is pretty much the plan for everyone, I would think. I also like to think I know the right people, or have at least talked to them. I have heard many times the knowing the right people is very important.

I have no worries, though, as I am working on something very exciting that I can't wait to get going on.

JT: I'm just the opposite to u bro...I have a BSc in Industrial Design, but I dont have the right contacts. I believe that I posses enough talent for an entry-level position, but i think being a black non-American played a role in my employment struggles. While I've maintained my dignity n integrity throughout these trying times, sometimes I wonder if going to college was worth it...

IAN: It has been my experience that going to college has definately been worth it. Even if I didn't obtain the right degree. it is still a good thing that I got some kind of design degree. Also, I have even been told that my designs reflect a kind of graphic style that may have come from my graphic schooling. The contacts will come with continued exposure of your work. Even just having your stuff on this sight has given you some indirect contacts. People with some power do check this board, and when the time is right, your chance will come.

Wayne, that stuff's hot, man.

Here's something I put together today. Part of this sketch feels kind of corny right now, but I think it has value as something that could grow in a variety of directions. The idea came from some things Dallas posted on the 18th. Even though he discouraged making the design brand-specific (other than Apple), I though it would be cool if shoe allowed customization via heel midsole tech from any shoe company. Since Apple computers have been a preferred design tool for years, this would allow all the brands to sort of give back to Apple by creating a "Mac-compatible" heel technology for this shoe. The buyer could customize their shoe with their brand choice of "sold separately" heel technology in much the same way that a Mac user can add peripherals and software applications to customize his/her computer.

Though the toe-to-heel Mac history lesson adds an interesting element to the shoe, I easily admit that the colors are ugly. But this is just prelim stuff.

wayne that is some heat kid! the 2nd sketch sticks out to me, need to see that one fully realized. my one critique is strictly aesthetic, the sticthing line weight seems too thick it sticks out to me, it also would add a lil detail to throw some texture on them stitches.

ian, where you from b?

i think generally within creative professions since it is quite competitive, it comes down to personality, contacts, and who you know. i have been told the hard part is getting your foot in the door. by and large the pro know this and that is likely why the take the time out of tere day to hit us with some feedback...

kobe...its gotta be the shoes..

wayne really feel'n the 3rd sketch. I think the sketch/ upper pattern works better than the comp rendering, It is more simple and the lines have a smoother/ consistant flow. I think you can also push more with the outsoles. many of the uppers are exciting and have this fan like movement but then the outsole designs kind of lack this dynamic look. But really bro- since that day you came through- I am seeing huge improvements.

I have some and1 sketches will post if you guys want to see some of the line work there designers have/ what they do.

Ryan- colors- nice how you brought it back. I think the history shown here in your design is working. maybe details in the macs designs from that persiond could be used in the outsole design (keyboard pattern) tower details/ holes for fans-transfer an link it to perfs.. I am thinking..with these being worn..do you think the outside is going to be too busy(so many colors/textures? maybe just have the color in key pops in the lateral side and then have the main strips of colors on the medial? excited to see what cill come up with..

first day back at school-

At 22-19, the Lakers are 3 games above .500 and 7th in the Western Conference..

"In 1986-87, Jordan scored a career-high 37.1 points per game and became the first player since Wilt Chamberlain to top 3,000 points in a season.

Despite Jordan's all-world performance, the Bulls still couldn't break above the .500 mark. They slipped a notch in the Central Division, finishing 5th with a 40-42 record." - NBA.com

this is some work done by some guys at And1- this is the type of line work and sketching they look for.

maybe this could help some guys- notice the views also shown- more than just the profile/ this really helps to do more than 1 view when you are sketching- and when others see your sketches it lets them know how you really understand the form of the shoe and how your design has been thought out in all angles.

Cool posts , Mark ! But is it just me or ...I'm looking at those designs , and I've seen the shoes on real itself . Why it happems that the pics look so much better than the real ones . Is it just the materials they are made of ? Or there is some proprotion\cutting issue that makes the real shoe kind of different ? And probably it's a problem for all the design work - to make the final product as much closer as possiblle to the one it's on the paper ? How is that happens ?

that is it right thurr! great advice...

vents, i think unless your at one of the big dogs there is always going something lost in translation from 2d drawings to 3d product. manufacturing, material costs, development costs it all affects the final product. most of the other players cannot afford or do not care to shell out the cash when it comes to research & development. when i interned at fila your jaw would drop at some of the hot ishh on the walls and on designers shelves, i would ask "what happen to this design" and see how the actual product was so far away from the sketch due to whatever reason, it is a definitely a difficult gig, but it would not be any fun if it were easy...

...I don't think you could say poor execution...the real shoe looks almost identical to the rendering!!!

To be honest in the uprise mid (wht/blue one) rendering the ankle/heel zone seems a little elongated which gives a slightly different shape feel.

The renderings are also very good...I think they have been done quickly but very detailed and clean!

I haven’t posted much and I just recently joined KG, but I have been following the site for quite a while and I genuinely believe KG is a great stepping-stone. Everyone posting here wants to design shoes so there’s no reason not to take it to the next level and go to school. I have a degree in ID and my contacts through school helped me get in to the biz. So I would recommend finding the schools that your design hero’s went to and applying there. That will get you recognized by the faculty and possibly recommended to alumni. It’s part of the schools responsibility to help its students find employment and that network is invaluable. In you portfolio show a genuine desire to be a designer, not just an interest in shoe design, and of course bring all your sketches not just the rendering heat, because a designer is a thinker before he is an illustrator. But the renderings can’t hurt either. I hope this helps those out there searching for an In. best of luck.

Okay, Petrie. I knew we'd hear from you today. I just knew it. I still say that do not like what I know about Kobe's off-court persona (even aside from all Colorado events). But to an 81 point performance, shooting 60% from the field and leading his team to victory... I applaud. I've never seen anything like that.

I have and 1 sketches to add to the two Mark posted but I'm not sure if I need permission from the designer. I'll find out.

Any idea on how to improve my sketching?...other than keep practicing? Should I be using french curves or something? I still can't do "nice" curved lines.

"Now, like Pietro said, show us some recent sketches, dude. And if you can't show us anything, give us a report. What sort of stuff are you working on right now?"

word!

it really is that simple--keep practicing, in my experience for some time it feels like i am not making any progress then something just clicks and i sort of understand. but beyond that challenge yourself and hold yourself to some standard, whether it be line quality, speed, or some other thing you want to improve at.

What Ade said is right- drawings and real shoes are 2 different things. you can't begin to imagine the layers of marketing, development, costing, and design refinement that each shoe goes through regardless of the company. I saw a bunch of hot renderings at Fila too, but hot shoes are expensive to build, especially if you want to retain the heat.
Wayne- haven't heard from you in a while, but the sketches are looking good man...
Ryan- I'm glad Kobe is finally able to show some of his true genius on court. I only care about his game, but the dude is the most intelligent player in the league, I just hope he stops making dumb choices off court so he can be viewed without prejudice...
Pietro- man, I would LOVE to post some sketches, if I could take part in these contests I damn sure would! But since I can't, and usually don't have time anyway, the best I can do is just follow along and pipe in when I think it's necessary. When the time is right, and I get permission, I may put up a drawing or two of something once it hits the market... There is some stuff coming I would really enjoy hearing you guys' feedback on...
For now you can just pick up a pair of the Flight Banger or my new uptempo joint and help me earn my paycheck!
Keep it up fellas...

hello guys

I am new to this board.

i would like to go back to these And 1 renderings as a pretext to give an other aspect that seems to be forgotten by the majority of the brands in the market.

Answer to the question why renderings and real product, mostly in footwear, can look different, partly consist in what Jason explained above.

The other aspect is the last.

Regarding basketball, few companies are using sexy lasts, that melt their shoe range into an attractive, slim , active silhouettes. Volumes are generally big, and there is nothing u can do against it till u question the base of footwear design: the last.

In fact, u can spend your life designing the most beautiful lines, choosing the best materials, developping the best concept and stories, it wont work with a fat ugly volume with no dynamic to lift..... Most of us in the biz experrienced that.

Because u are all free to draw and compete, why dont u question also the global silouette of your proposals, get rid of the existing templates, explore etc... u can approach a product in different ways, the volume is with the color blocking, the first aspect we all perceive.

to sum up, If the product is sexy on the paper, make sure u have the right tested volume to keep your promises.

B-A

Jason, I completely with with your last point on Kobe. I love to see redemption, and I'll pull for anyone who seeks it. And there have been some signs of a new Kobe since Colorado. But only time will tell if it's real. While I'm not a fan, I'm certainly not a Kobe hater. Had I been in Staples on Sunday, I'd have been cheering and wanting to see more. Ok, I hear ya. And here’s some stuff that I can show do to the fact it is not even remotely possible. For starters this concept was equipped for maximum traxion, the outsole wraps up so only a portion of the teeth actually make contact with the green. As it turns out, golfers don’t want to damage the green even for the advantage of more grip, so the aesthetics to not signify a benefit. But I thought the idea was cool.

In regards to retros heres my take. Im 31 yrs old. At the time some of these shoes originally came out. I was either in school or jobless / starving artist / freelancer ( you get the point)....meaning I couldnt afford them. Now with a stable job and some sort of an understanding about what a budget is. I can now buy most of the shoes I coveted during those times, when not even ramen was available in my cupboard! So its not really about tech for me. Its about finally being able to get what I want when I my wife lets me lol

Cheers

Rich

those and1 drawings are pretty tight. but i guess a hand drawing, you can feel more energy than a stale product sitting on the shelf.

I know it is a little gimmicky but it would be done part as a performance show, part as a tribute. It is a combination of the 1, 10, & 20 with 360 Air Max. Any thoughts. It is just a rough sketch.

Hi KG guys.

I'm a Coventry Uni student studying Transport Design/Styling. After a collaborative project with a top sports footwear company I have become increasingly interested in the footwear design industry.

I'm new to this site. Is there anywhere for general chat? I have some unrelated footwear renderings I'd be interested in hearing feedback on.

I'm looking forward to having a stab at next month's brief - in between the piles of uni work I've got!

Good luck to all. Cheers

this is my final ipod-nano-inspired concept in its early stages. notice how its flowing lines mimic the curves and shapes in the apple logo..

p.s. i decided to show it in its raw form first before tricking it out for the final rendering.

PHIL: That is quite extensive work. I think you covered everything. Your thought process and passion really show through in the second one.

The only things I have to say are:
1. What do you do, you obviously have great computer skills.
2. A brand called SPIRA, I do't know if you are familiar with them, actually uses a spring exactly like the one your design calls for. I believe they call it a Wavespring.
3. it seems that the pump works almost opposite of the way the pump works on Reeboks current shoes. You let the air out to stiffen it? Also, if that is the case, would it be easier to use the pump to pump air in and the valve to let it out. I am not sure how the valve would let air in.

This is great work, however. It is some of the most thought out I have ever seen.

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Justin:
Qu. 1. done

2. is spira the brand of shoe or the supplier of the spring? I designed it as a lightweight system and to give he illusion of it not being there - 'keep on your toes'.

3. The valve couldn't be used to let out the air because the air in the chamber is equal in pressure to the surrounding air. So when the valve is pressed, no air would transfer.

The idea is: the 'foam beeds' in the 'pump chamber' move freely when the pressure in the chamber is equal to that of the surrounding air. When the air in the chamber is pumped out the pressure in the chamber is less than that of the surrounding air so the surrounding air exerts a force on the outside wall of the chamber squashing the beeds inside. Subsequently the beeds are squashed together, the air in the tiny bubbles of the beeds is removed, causing them to stiffen up the chamber.

As the valve is pressed, the air in the chamber tries to equalise itself with the pressure of that of the surrounding air so draws in air as the beeds expand and the air re-enters the tiny bubbles in each beed.

Does that explain it? Sorry if it's confusing. That's why i'm not studying english... lol

Ian:
For this minor side project it wasn't really a concern for me to concentrate on exactly what material was used. Only thinking about the properties i would require from the material. I have mentioned using Zytel.

Hope this helps.
