Just a point of interest:
How much do you think the popularity of a design depends on the quality of the rendering? Which would you rate higher - a hot design drawn with Crayolas, or a boring design with a hot digital rendering?
I am big on my photoshop and 3D computer modelling (I hope I can show this in a future brief) but wonder how many good designs get written off because they are presented poorly. After all, it's always said it's the idea that counts.
I'm not trying to make a point. I'm just interested in people's opinions.
I find the final rendering stages the most exciting and love to do elaborate presentations. |

JAMIEN - I'm feeling your design but I find the rendering conflicting to look at.
The material below the mesh is shaded to look 3 dimensional but the mesh conflicts with this by being flat. It's hard to tell if it's a 3D shape or flat?
If in Photoshop you use the distort tool on the mesh to give it some perspective and then shade it to give it shape it would flatter your design a lot more.
Hope you don't take this advce the wrong way, but I think this would help show the design a lot better. |

I think Jamien is really capturing the spirit of the iPod. Really, IMO, anything that has a circle with a play, pause, forward and reverse button should not make it to the finals. The point is to distill the iPod down to its essence, extract that and put it into a shoe. When I look at an iPod I see a minimalist solution to complicated problems. I see high technology under a veil of simplicity. I see nothing that doesn't absolutely have to be there. There should be no styling, no design lines. Only function resolved in beautiful ways. This is an extremely challenging design approach. There are some good starts, but I think someone could still fire in a last minute solution. |

T.Murphy, is the upper stucked to the sole or not ?
Jamien, the upper shoe is only made of TPU or there is an inner shoe ? cause TPU is not really comfortable...
Ian, i like your philosophy of the simplicity, but i think the outsole is a little bit thick and make a sensation of an "heavy" sole.
Douglas, very nice render, can you explain your concept ? |

Hey Sol long time no see, hope you doing good.
I'm not sure of wich Thomas u were talking abt, but guess it's me; the square in the outsole is a window to make it lighter and show the gel pocket and its plates at the same time. Didn't want to include any technology..
Arnaud, yes it is stuck to the sole, but as a friend pointed out to me (thx Ludo) the shoe is built a bit like an nano plugged on it's docking base. Thought I could've even pushed the concept further by really having the plug-in concept, a confort sock, pure and light, that you put on a Nano basketball sole, or a Nano football one..
Just thought I'd share that since you made that interesting remark ;) |

Any of you guys fancy posting up some of your idea generation sketches 'cos they're as important and interesting as the final rendering.
It's always interesting to see how people approach their sketching in different ways and with different mediums.
Like car design, the sketches are something people never get to see so can never appreciate it and understand the thought and time put into it. They just see a car. |

Phil: the rendering quality vs concept quality has been debated here quite a few times...
There are guys, like Jordan Brand director D'Wayne Edwards that prefer seeing just pencil drawn sketches or renderings because you can see the purity of the shape and lines while a good colored rendo could hide some poor thought details. Other guys are just more technology oriented and often present only digital made things...
I think I'm just in the middle since I like to finish my stuff digitally (with Photoshop), because it gives me more the idea of a complete job. But I'm trying to reach the same level with markers and colored pencils because I think that the rendering techniques are just a tool and not final target...the more techniques you will be able to apply the easier will be to present your ideas second to the purpouse of presenting them.
BTW it seems that, in the past, here cool renderings always had great votes. But now the KGers are becoming more expert and professional so they seem to better evaluate concept and rendering at the same time.

Hey guys,
I thought I would give you some more information about how I came up with my design. I’ve got through to the finals a few times now but am still looking to improve and would welcome more feedback.
The key idea I tried to translate from the ipod nano to my shoe was an ultra light weight thin design, while using the simplicity and curved lines of the apple design language. I felt that for this reason it had to be a low top shoe. I decided to remove weight from the central area of the shoe by using a perforated and breathable material, following the curvature of the click wheel (see details page). I thought the heel and toe should remain reinforced and being a performance basketball shoe I wanted to maintain ankle support. This led me to the inclusion of the strap using the armband accessory for inspiration. I decided to not use white in the colour scheme as I didn’t want the ipod translation to be too direct however I did include thin white strips on the shoe as another way to relate it back theme. To further remove excess weight I simplified the sole allowing it to only ride up the shoe at the heel and the toe.
I chose the name Quantum as it means the smallest physically realizable unit of something, and also quantum dots are an integral part of nanoscience. Finally the silhouette was a play on the ipod advert.

Man, this month is lookin' good. You guys are definately putting in the work.
I would like to comment on the rendering debate that seems to be brewing. I, myself, prefer hand drawn over computer any day. That's funny, though, 'cause as I type this I am actually learning the Wacom Tablet, which I love so far. But, that is for work. If I could do it my way all the time it would be hand drawn every time. In fact, if you have ever seen any of my designs, they have ALL been completely hand drawn. I've never touched them up with the computer until now, but again that is for work, that is not on my own.
I think using the computer too much can hide imperfections. You get that wow factor with a nicely finished rendering, which may make the untrained viewer think it is fantastic, when in reality, it wouldn't be. Granted, the computer can make some steps much easier, like filling in a harringbone pattern. That takes forever to draw!
My opinion is this: hand renderings show more skill in its purest form. The computer should only be used as an aid. It is necessary, though. It makes it much easier to change colorways for production shoes. |

comp or hand- I think people these days should be comfortable in both. these are both tools of the biz and like anything in life why not try an push limits and learn more. its like in basketball you aint just going to learn how to shoot a jump shot if your a shooting guard, you are going to try and learn other things to make your game TIGHT- so you work on your drive your handles your upps, your D. just like that in the shoe biz step your game up wit all levels-( concept/ thinking is most important/ my opinion- I have seen many people who cant sketch pretty pics but can still communicate it with the factories and the samples come out nice)
AT THE END OF THE DAY ITS WHATEVER GETS THE JOB DONE (communicates your idea(s) and serves the needs of what the client/ memo asks for)
sketching- I think is more important than learning to draw finish "pretty" pictures. I look at drawing and sketching as two different components. I think sketching is a skill that shows thought process and this is valuable in the biz esp for initial concept presentations- gets many ideas out quick. these Final looking renderings many times are just used in the biz for presentations to like foot locker/ footaction/ sales teams etc/ and many times if possible there will be a couple samples to go along with it for the presentation. (sometimes you are not even in control of how your work is presented on the boards/ or on screen presentations/ and when you first are starting out you will not be presenting your work in these meetings)- but this doesnt mean you shouldnt be working on your presentation skills and your skills overall/ even if most likely you wont be doing all this when you get in.

i do not know that much has changed...and that is not a knock on anyone, it is just the way it is. people here are really pushing the boundaries here of what is next, but do not get it twisted EVERYONE loves a pretty picture, even the most seasoned designers can be by a flashy render...
as for the computer vs, hand drawn/render debate, it would be prudent for all to be able to get down with both if you want to maximize your attractiveness to potential employers...
but if you going to put all your proverbial eggs in one basket, you can not go too wrong with the old fashioned analog methods... |

jake eadie you got ten for
1. beauty
2. great shape
3. good render
4. the back view is so amazingly realistic i have fallen in love with it.
5. it is not symmetric
6. those slashing lines look so powerfull
7. the headphone symbol engraved is awesome
8. the sole looks like it wants to MOVE
9. the red flag like thing which i dont understand. it intrigues me.
10. the heel area
11. its hand done.
and the only thing i dint like.
1. the midsole looks "cheap" and not like the nano's exclusivity.
but even that was balanced cos it looks realistically cheap. :D
can you explain that flag thingi? or actually: dont. i'd rather worry bout it myself.
great job.

I just wanted to make a comment on Comp vs. Freehand.
First off I think you need to have to have some handsketching abilitiy to be successful on photoshop and illustrator. Alias or other 3-D programs allow you to get around this. Eitherway as a designer you still need to have a good sense of concept, proportions and excecution. I like seeing hand sketches for the same reason Mark Minor likes them - Proccess.
BTW I do think Illustrator like Photoshop is a great tool for presentation reasons. Illustrator allows you to bang out many colorways in almost no time, as well as create cool offset patterns and graphics. Photoshop can show material usage very well.
Anyways Im new to this site and its great to see the variety of styles and execution. |

Phil: the fact I've said that the render vs concept issue was discussed in the past does not mean that you have to stop talking about that!!! It's an always interesting point of discussion since the things are quickly changing beacuse softwares tend to become more handy day after day, and I think they actually could change the working path speeding it up. Then people opinion could change as well as new experiences are brought in.
So no apologies are necessary, this discussion, luckily, will comeback from time to time!

joe- nice thumbs, did you use pencil first? or just straight pen and marker?
I think working with just pen can be helpful. I believe that when you just draw with pen you mind knows it cant erase so over time with practice all the strokes have to have thought an meaning/ because they arent going anywhere..(bic pens-best because you can ghost in the lines- then come over it darker to define your design)
out of all the thumbs I like the attitude and movement in the bottom right hand corner in the third row ( all white and grey). I think you could explore this more. it is simple and has energy-but now the forms can be more defined. in these next explorations would now work on the proportions and more views-top-both a medial, lateral -outsole..but am feel'n the energy in all of them.
good luck with the entry for this month.

Hey Wayne, nice shoe.
Can you tell me what material do you use for the blue seed shaped part?
Another thing, as your shoe let you see through its upper and cushionning system, you should try to render the background part in perspective to add the depth in your rendering. Using a one point perspective, if you choose a point of view in the center of your shoe, you can use some perspective guideline to create the depth of your shoe.
I don't know if I'm clear but I just want to say that it would be awesome to see the other side of the shoe through the holes.
Hey Benko, yes the Pikolo 59er is doing great. I did submit for this month and so I'm still feeling the suspense of being finalist (as you must do too, I saw your submission on isd-up)

JAKE:From what I can see you have a drawing skills. What I mean by that is your proportions look pretty solid and the shoe looks wearable and like a real shoe. That may sound funny but if you look at some of the other sketches they do not look like a real shoe or like a foot could actually fit in them. So, I would say good work on that part which honestly is half of the battle.
As for the design, I really can't tell what you are trying to do with the lacing or how you can get into the shoe. Next time should show more exploration drawings like WAYNE and/or a Top View so everyone can see your vision. From what I can see it looks pretty good but not simple and clean enough to connect back to Apple's Design Language. Next time make sure your design speaks to your inspiration more. You should be able to see your inspiration in the design more.
I also, think your selection of colors abd color blocking makes the shoe look heavy and not like something Apple would do. I think WAYNE, TOM and JAMIEN did a good job of selecting colors and color blockings that looks like it could be merchandised with an iPod.
I am not sure if you are a student, how old you are or if you are doing this as a hobby but I would say stick with it because I can see you have talent but like with anything you do the more you try to learn, practice and love what you do you will get better.
Good Luck!

Thanks Mista Nguyen ,chnord in da web :)
For the graphic , (the head and the flower)i was trying to introduce an area where you can personnalise the shoes (like the engraved Ipod if you order it in the web) and still nike use the laser technique to realise a lot of model . i just saw a possible crossover between the 2 brands . I probably forget to explain this detail in the explanation i gave to KG.
I'm curious about your submission , are you goin to post it on isd-up?
For the Superbowl, no big deal you know i 'm not from seattle, and this was my fist game . i just live there .. but i'm sad for all the guys i was with when WE lost .. too bad That would have been a great occasion to party a little bit more . , next year perhaps . |

Justin: I was referring to the article..it was the only one I really related to...I've never owned a pair a J's...the whole issuse is about owning/collecting Jordans I guess. The comic was ok..i would have liked some more text on it..not sure if that was your call or not..the drawing of the 21 was nicely done.
I saw this guy wearing the xxi's on the subway today..they look really nice...I want them.
Pietro: did you submit anything for this month? I was waiting to see what you came up with. That shoe with the leopard is kinda wierd but in a good way...I keep going back to look at it.

Thanks for liking my story. It's kinda funny that as it went to press I already had a job, but that still put "artist" as my occupation, since my job is with a competing shoe company. now- I see what is there-before was just a red ?
Min Chul Kim- your proportions on the lateral view seem to be right, but in the medial view the collar/ ankle area seems to be pulled back a bit too far. also seen in the medial view is that a closure to a strap? and why have the jordan logo on the medial and not on the lateral? right now it looks more like a nike shoe-. I think the placement of the nike check and its scale to the shoe's scale looks well done. I think would get rid of the jordan logo- or get rid of the nike logo and put jordan logo on the lateral if you want to make it a jordan shoe.
would work on getting the medial view's pattern to flow more smooth like how you did it in the lateral view. I think now you could also bring in some details-like in the outsole-side wall to help tell your story and bring out more of your inspirations.
what where you inspired by?
I think having a lil more of a description when posting a design would help you get more detailed feedback. also would like to see a top view/ outsole view- thumbnails
I think its a great start.
Joe S- could you give us a lil bit of a description about your design?

whats stood out to me the the color pops ("plastic color panels") and how they worked against the linear straight "tubing." the "tubing" is leather? embossed? stitched an padded?
I also was interested in the outsole side wall - that heel has some interesting forms-
what are your inspirations for these details? you mentioned ipod commercials- that is a fine inspiration but what aspect/ scene or emotions/ etc did you pull from them?
Mm |
joe sattler (77 )

For the ipod commercial inspiration I took a few ideas. First of all- color. I did not want to do simply a white shoe with silver accents. The commercials were more vibrant than that. Also I believe apple was the first to make computers with colored shells. The next aspect was- movement. I wanted to design interesting freeform shapes that created a movement throughout the shoe and led the viewers eye in an interesting way. This is like the dancing movement of the commercials. The final aspect I focused on was- negative space. I wanted the panels to work together visually. I wanted the space around them to be interesing, too. This is similar to the commerial. Because they use silhouettes there is an interesing relationship between the "positive" space taken up by the black figure and the "negative" spaces it creates in the colored backgrounds.
So it pretty much came out as colored shapes. |

I have been looking more closely at running shoe midsoles because these usually have more movement in them than basketball shoes. (the mayfly and kukini come to my mind first.) I took some ideas from them for the heel midsole and then did this overlapping thing because I thought it looked cool. For the tubing I thought it would be a synthetic material, with actual tubes connected together. |

Man , Cubby ... You just break my entire concept for the next month comp !...Love that idea ,man ! I think you could apply more on the personailzed of the shoes ,emphasize the real power of that textile - to allow the user to creat its own style . Try to switch the upper , make a bigger choice in allowing the personalizing stuff on more than just one area of the shoe .Anyway , great thinking , you got 10 from me , the entire concept ... Thats insane that GA has to do his own customizing, and hes using a dry erase marker =/ Man someone at Adidas dropped the ball on that one.
Speaking of All Star kicks. The XX1s are extrodinary! DE I must give you props for creating this well rounded shoe. I love the comfort! The design of the shoe is one of the best ive seen in a Jordan since my fav of all time, the XIIIs. Is the hidden message there for authentication or do I simply have to wait to find out? hah

Air Jordan isn't intended to please everyone in terms of design. But if there is a point that everyone CAN agree on, I think it might be that there's nothing sloppy about the design of an Air Jordan, from I to XXI. I'd just like to know your specific thoughts behind that comment. |

I feel the support, especially around the ankle... its very decieving the but the molded area feels great... and the XXI's also look great with joggers or jeans to rock them in... the zoom kobe's... love them too... the white grey yellow combo looks hot... the lebron all-star is actually one of the first i've seen in stores to carry some sort of graphic, apart from the lazering on the XX's... thats a nice addition to the best lebron shoe made to date... though it is heavier than the jordans and kobes. |

Dwayne,
I cant imagine how busy you are with everything, but i do have a quick question for you. I have a contact at Nike that has offered to show me around the shoe design facilities in Beaverton sometime in late spring or summer...I was wondering how hard it was to set up a tour (with anyone at Jordan), or even get a basic look around...also, i will be graduating soon from Ohio State and i would love to know if Jordan has some sort of intern program or if there is another way to set up an interview for a position...i realize you probably get a hundred requests like this, but if there is any information that you can send my way
(hartings.9@osu.edu ), or just post on here, i'd really appreciate it..... |

Corey Joseph, I'll start with a couple positive thoughts. Your proportion is pretty good. and I like the simplicity. It's not overdesigned. That's good.
Now for the negative...
THE TOE: I know a lot of designers draw the toe turned up like that, as a matter of rendering style. But just looking at that makes my toes uncomfortable. If it helps communicate a design idea, then that's one thing, but that's not the case with yours. No hoop shoe is made like that, so why draw it that way? That's just my opinion.
THE ANKLE: The circle at the ankle looks like a straight rip-off of the medial side of the AJ XXI. There's a not-so-fine line between inspiration and plagiarism.
THE HEEL: The roundness of your heel isn't good for basketball. The heel needs a flatter & wider foundation at the floor for ankle stability.
THE SWOOSH: Nike would never let you present the swoosh like that... jammed between that black perfed opening and the outsole. It's actually the most original idea in the whole design, and I know you were trying to be clever with it but it doesn't look good. No logo should be presented with that sort of optical interference. That's graphic design 101.
OUTSOLE: Not bad, but the outriggers at the lateral forefoot and medial heel need some beef or to veer upward to give them some strength. They look more like little flaps. The one at the heel would likely even get in the way and trip you up when shuffling laterally on defense.
Sorry to be so hard on your design. Just giving you some honest feedback and suggestions for improvement. Don't get mad, get better. :) |

By the way, I was just on Jumpman23.com and they've got the new red Italian suede featured on the splash. There's a new link titled "PERSPECTIVES", with video commentaries from several people, MJ included. The longest one is by some guy named D'Wayne Edwards.
Seriously, good stuff, man. |

Oki here was my interpretation of the theme :
Apple : The iKick
This basketball shoe has been inspired by several theme of the Apple brand.
The whole shoe is designed with straight lines connected with soft radius. The ankle window is looking like a click-wheel and uses mesh to provide comfort and breathability. The chrome parts allow an homogene repartition of pressure between the upper and the outsole.
The colorway is inspired by the first generation of iMACs.
I'm kinda disapointed but I will post it here so I can get some comments.

so I´ll just say I like it ;-)
and dont say "back to reality" amigo, keep on spitting some nice renderings like these, they will always enhance your portfolio..

Yes, Thomas, thanks for mentioning that. I mean no disrespect to KG. I know that a large part of evaluating the submissions is purely subjective. So I don't like to say who should and shouldn't make finals since that isn't my job. I just think Guillaume has a very solid thoughtful design. That's all I'm saying. I'm glad you posted it, Guillaume. And KG, I'm glad you guys do what you do, even when I have a different take on things. |

guillaume, I feel your design. However, other than the round radius at the ankle area, I do not see anything related to the nano theme. They don't look that lightweight due to the midsole. Also, seeing that you only have 1 rendering and 1 angle of the shoe, I don't think it has pushed the envelope enough. Most of the finalists either has a better rendering, or a better idea or at the very least has more details than what you have to offer. Again, it is a close call and I really do like what you did, but I can see why it missed the cut. |

Vents; i'm a bit dissapointed.. it seems less cutting edge than some of your earlier shoes.. or maybe I'm just not grasping the genius of it yet..
And lay off the pastel-colours for your next one maybe..

Good stuff Kyle. The rendering is very good and lots of nice textures that really bring the shoe to life. Its definitely fast looking, but possibly could have simplified the heel to make it more smooth and perhaps more in line with apple's products. Overall, very clean job. |

Most of the time though, especially with Js I always have to wait in lines to cop a pair because in my area theres a large Filipino community and man we all wear size 9s it seems, I can never get anything in my size..man I can only think what im gonna have to do to get the Military IVs :( |

Rich, I believe Dwayne is referring to prototypes. Almost all concepts and shoe samples are a size 9. at least the mens. If you worked for Nike & wore a 9, you would have sooo many footwear samples and shoes that consumers never see.
I wear a 13, and you have to be quick to get those too.
by the way Adidas dropped the Garnett's in all star and black & red with some cool images. The new Force are beautiful too. I think I'm looking for some new ones.
My Lebrons are giving me some issues: 1st the metal rings on the lacing shreds my shoe strings, and I have been slipping alot in the heel area. Anyone else have the Lebron's? |

I managed to wait until all the finalists were up before voting. I really wish I could give some.5's some concepts deserved a little better than say a 7, but maybe not quite on the 8 tier. I think 3 stand a little above, and I have 1 fav.
There were a few deserving guys who didn't make it Douglas, I like your thinking. Ian, and Guillaume. Luvell, I though your preview was hot. After seeing your complete concept; it just wasn't very dynamic to me & your proportions seemed a little off. I think you were close though. Nice looking concept too Kyle...tough job KG.

All this talk of size 9 samples reminds me... I don't think I ever showed y'all the rare sample adidas gave me on one of my T-Mac 4 Artist Series trips. This is a colorway they cooked up for 04 All-Star game. He didn't end up wearing it, instead going with the retail version red on one foot and blue on the other. The unique thing about this sample is the lines on the medial side and the shank plate alternate red and white. And the ebmroidered logo on the tongue is red. These were not available in stores. I have no clue how many samples were made like this. Of course these are size 9. I wear 12.5.
Sorry about the image quality. I left my camera at work today, so I just put them on my scanner.

wow aurelien you have got some skills in rendering! the shoe is a good design too it looks very wearable, a bit blatantly inspired by the nano (materials) . im really loving the shape it looks so real, you know.. some designs are just a bit hard to imagine on a foot.
and as i said - beautiful render (prefer the white one)
i feel the overall presentation (sky blue bg) really jarrs with the good shoe. it doesnt reflect the quality of your design.
one thing i dont understand - the metallic heel will it compress at all for cushioning?
good work.
oh and FIY.. the reason your image dint post first was you had provided a url that included "view?" in it. i posted it without that. the second time it had two or three urls one after the other. hope you get it right next time- can you post a larger image of that white shoe? my old monitor makes it hard to look at dettailing in black.

enrique: its a nice render, but i'm not a fan of the transparent straps - how do they work. i cant see any velcro. also, it brings to mind the unfortunate flaw in the nanos of scratching, and the need for a silicon cover. i am very against the use of an "extra" design element (that is not a part of the product) to protect the original design. the straps remind me of it, probably just me though. |

arpith: Yes I aggree with your oppinion about the transparent straps.
The thing is that, as long as I was finishing the design it seamed to me that I was adding more and more weight to the shoe-design, so I decided to put this trasnparent material to the straps so they would become lighter.
But I had also to bear in mind the velcro system which is behind, but I could make because of a lack of time...so it has been like this for this time, which by the way, was my firt attemp in desinging shoes

Without any disrespect Ariel ('cos for 9 years you've been doing exactly what I aspire to do) but with those 9 years experience do you not think your Nike 'springy' shoe is ergonomically flawed. To me it appears the heel of the foot would be elevated too high to run. The ankle support is too low to hold that colossus sole onto the foot. The toe box is massive! which gives it more of a boot look than a sleek running shoe. And the single column shock would create a questionably unstable heel.
Am interested in seeing more of your designs though as your Bellaco shoe appears a lot better resolved and we are all interested in what guys in the industry come up with.

Ariel: Can you possibly show us samples of shoes that you have actually designed..either at Kappa or Fila? Im pretty sure someone with your experience should have a portfolio and a half full of stuff.
Im just getting the feeling this overload of Nike work you have up is for the purpose of impressing specific Nike heads.
Its still cold here in SoCal...need more heat :)

Probably the only reason you didnt make it is because theres a bit to much going on in the designe, and the theme was light wieght preformance.
but otherewise it looks great. |

Ariel: My designs are somewhere on this site.
I have no story im not in the business and I barely do designs for a living lol...lets see I went to OTIS/Parsons, the year they split from Parsons....I have done a lot of CD covers for hip hop artists like MC EIHT, LIL KEKE and the late DJ SCREW. Trying to get into footwear design, but the road is long and the travel will be fun :)
No one is trying to hurt your feelings with the comments, for someone with 9 years of experience, I would have expected you to be able to take critisizm much better.
I asked you to show the shoes that have already gone to productions because I trully didnt feel the previous designs you posted were up to par with Nike standards. I am not doubting your talent as a designer, I was simply questioning the way you laid it all out. And I think thats what Arpith was saying also... the shoes themselves were pretty good, but the way you presented them looked pretty grade school. Sorry to be harsh man, but we only say what we see here. Take everything with a grain of salt. And relax homie, everythings gonna be alright :) |

Ariel :"Phil, phil, phil, have you been in china in the factories working with prototipes?? cause I do,,sometimes a shoe looks heavy but is not.."
Who wants a shoe that looks heavy anyway? (apart from a goth in a mosh pit) Design is all about psychology.
Visually you want the product to achieve its function.
Like a gun. You wouldn't want to go to war with pink guns. You'd want aggressive coloured one's that emphasise the performance of the gun.
In the same way you wouldn't buy heavy looking shoes to go running.
If you would like to elaborate on any other comments I am willing to explain.
I was trying to be fully respectful with my opinions. |

hey ariel lol your keyboard must be real messed up man.. you misspelt my name twice!
dude, i like the blue kick with the off center zipper.
i dont think you got anything positive from my crit, so here it is again..
when i buy a jordan, i'm looking for a JORDAN and not any tom dick or harry you know what i mean? what makes your shoe a JORDAN and not anything else? that is what you should be communicating effectively.
your nike runner, again, the lack of stability makes me question its credibility as a serious shoe. hey it looks pretty radical, but thats hot only in poor misguided youth. i've also never seen an experienced designer put his name in bold font as a bg pattern. fine, it may be your style, but stil the layout looks immature.
i try and criticize the shoe and not the man who made it. your background info made me expect more, there's no harm in that though.
so here's my crit in brief:
1) poor layout always undermines a design
2) the jumpman looked like an afterthought
3) the nike does not appear well thought out to me.
i'd love to get critism on the design i'm working on currently, after all, i am only a lowly high school student.
i've also put up some stuff on core, hit me up at arpith.siro@gmail.com if you would like the link
i hope you'll get my name right now, its ARPITH and i'm past the stage of witty comebacks about caliban

lol Ariel...good luck trying to find a job with that attitude :)
Arpith only said your designs look immature, because for someone to claim they had 9 years of experience in the industry using that grafitti font and how you laid your designs out...well looked very high school. Maybe we have been spoiled by seeing work from D2lo, Jason Petrie, Tony Hardman, Holler and JT...maybe we have another vision of what to expect from someone who claims to be a "professional" In the end your designs might not be immature, but your attitude sure is..
"You need fries with that?"

Ariel: I think we have a bit of a misunderstanding here...I never doubted your skill as a designer. I was mearly trying to explain to you, how someone might see your work as being "high schoolish"...if you cant handle that so be it, but to call someone names or insult them directly is pretty much uncalled for especially for someone with your experience. If your boss called your new design a peice of crap would you lash out and call him an idiot and call him names? I dont think so..lets keep it professional, because that what we all want to be. Keep in mind most people on these boards are not in the industry or are still in high school trying to find guidance on how to get to where YOU are at. So forgive them for using words like immature to describe your work, for they dont really know any other way to describe it.
This site isnt about trying to find a job, its to showcase your passion for footwear to other people, yes some people have been hired by companies due to the site, but for the majority its not always the case. Some will like your designs some will not and its how you deal with that critisism thats important.
Also I never said I was looking for a job, but by you asking DE several times to email you so you could show him your designs, it sure sounded like you wanted new employment. If thats not the case, forgive me for assuming.
Lets move on and design...
Cheers

2-I don' want to be fighting with not any of you,And if anybody use offensive words on me they're gonna get the same from me as well..
3-lets stop this fight, cause all this people are reading all we're saying each other and maybe they are seeing us acting like two kids fighting for a candy.....
4-I talk to D.E.cause now he is the man (jordan brand designer director)..and who doesn't needs advice from him?? and who wouldn't want to work with him as well??..

Yep, it's gettin too fussy up in here. If you feel like someone is being too rough on you, take the high road. Show your work or be quiet. Turning it into a roil doesn't help anyone. And it's sure not fun for the rest of us to read. It's like listening to two 6 year-old girls arguing.
On the flip side, its best to say EXACTLY what you mean on chat boards, especially when what you're saying is critical. If you know you're already saying something that might be difficult for someone to accept, why make it worse by trying to be cute for others?
And always follow your criticism with some solid reasoning, and maybe a positive suggestion. Don't tear people down, unless it's to make them better.
