Thanks for reply Pietro!!
here is my work and I hope I can get good feed back.
I chose GTR and Adidas three stripes.
and I chose dark color for luxuriness
Mostly I concerned about air circularion
as GTR is.
breathability is as important to shoes as cooling is important for the sports car like GTR.

hello. Barbu, stephen, Jonathan and everyone. thanks a lot for your suggestions. i thought my design had some problems. first, yes, the button is called iDrive.there is the introduce on the bmw web. "More functions, fewer buttons: the iDrive system puts everything at your fingertips.
the M Drive button on the steering wheel.they can be combined freely using".i designed the iDrive system on the shoe which was like adidas HUG system on the t-mac 4.and i didn't design the details and how things will actually work. that is bad. i will be more carefull to present the details on the next project. and about the carbon fiber material . i just wanted that looked like carbon fiber.not real. you can find out there is a new shoe called Nike Air Solo Flight Retro.it looks like all carbon fiber. i hope i can tell all of you more my design. but my english is not very well. i will keep going. including my design and english....HaHa^_^ |

hey guys, good month of work! Thanks for the comments thus far, I knew there would be some mixed feelings about my design. As far as my inspiration goes, I've always been taught that one doesn't have to literally "see" the inspiration in the shoe (or any product that is being designed for that matter). While it may be cool to see that inspiration translated directly onto the shoe (especially with a car theme), there are other underlying theories and directions of inspiration that one could take as a designer and let those influence and help develop their design. There are a lot of great designs out there (footwear and product) where you don't literally "see" the designer's inspiration slapped on there, but when you hear the story behind it, you see their direction and how the design came to be from their inspiration, and it all comes together. Just my 2 cents... |

~ miya zhao:The shape is not good. It looks fat and reminds the wooden shoes in Netherlands. You are supposed to give explanations for your rating so i can understand what i've done wrong. Instead you came up again with some "funny" remarks like last month when you gave me a 4 if i remember well... Try and reach a final and show me how a real shoe look like. PS: Beware of dutch people :))! |

Hi all, good works up there :)
here's my entry...
My concepts are simple, I tried to apply M3 and GTR design language and philosophy onto shoes.
"BMW's design language nowadays is called "Flame Surface". It appears most if we see the side profile of it's car range from 1 to 7 series. BMW's M-cars are formally known for its high performance from normally aspirated engines. While the engine can match higher classified cars, like Porsche, Aston Martin, or even a Ferrari, but the look of M-range cars are not too extreme.
For this concept, I tried to apply the "flame surface" language for Adidas casual lines to meet the M-cars philosophy, High Performance in everyday use look.
The language can be seen in the side profile and its organic lines, while the performance itself comes from the blue adiPrene sole. I also made Adidas' 3 stripes with M-logo colors.
For Nissan GTR, we can see "Muscular Robotic" language, straight lines, robotic details, and its C-pillar profile is quite unique.
This concept is using the same language, and also GTR-logo color combo. The performance comes from the red full length mid-sole.
However, I see both cars have 1 similarity in design, both are "CLEAN" with different approach.
Both are legends and have the same goal, to beat the higher clans."
But probably It's not deep enough LOL :D
Even though I cant be one of the finalist, I'm pretty satisfied though :)
All the finalists are great!!!
All comments are welcome...
thanks
Ciao

Barbu: I can see that you are passionate about your footwear designs, just like everyone else who is a member of the KG community. I am going to give you some criticism which you will hopefully find constructive and use to improve your skills. Here it is: 1) It seems that the 3D program is limiting your design ability. The shapes of your shoes are incorrect (the comments about your bad shoe shape are valid...see pic below), and the designs aren't reaching their full potential. I would suggest leaving the 3D alone for a while and start sketching. If you are looking to pursue footwear design as a career, you are going to need to be able to sketch. From personal experiences, a footwear company would much rather see a lot of quick ideation sketches that are correct in shape and proportion than a mediocre 3D rendering of a single idea. For the time it takes to produce one of your 3D renderings, someone else could have a page or more of proportionally correct concept sketches, which are a lot more valuable to a footwear company. Don't get me wrong...your 3D skills will definitely help, just after you master the other basics first.

(continued) (2) One of my professors told me this on the first day of class, and I have heard it from other people too: "Resist falling in love with your products!" You cannot think that everything you design is going to be the greatest solution there is. It's only going to make taking criticism that much harder. It seems that every time someone tries to tell you a bad point about your design, you get really offensive. Just put it up there, and let it get torn to pieces if it has to. Trust me, you learn faster that way. Lastly, I think some of your comments are uncalled for, like this one- "Try and reach a final and show me how a real shoe look like." I'm not sure if it was meant as a joke or not, but either way it just doesn't sound good. KG is a place to learn and grow as footwear designers, so we should keep it friendly. Sorry for the long post...just my two cents. |

Dragon: your design is a very good starting point. The first thing you should improve is the shape of your shoe, check the attached picture.
As you can see normal shape (red line) is thinner at the forefoot and comes up a little higher at the front of the ankle. This will give your design a more dynamic look and make it seem lighter.
Then you can add some little detail more (stitchings , logos...) to make to complete the design.
Last thing the background you put behind the shoe has to help the shoe to come out of the screen and make it shine! You had to put a white border to make the shoe detach from the darkness behind, but it would have been better to try a different background.
Anyway good stuff, keep working on your skills ;)
Barbu: beside all the valuable points Phil pointed out , I want you to note also that from a functional point of view the midsole you have designed in your cross section is totally flat.
That is VERY bad for your achilleous tendons, normally every shoe has a different thickness at the forefoot and at the heel...check it out on your own.
Second thing you can't finish the outsole in a edgy way just below the middle of your heel bone, whenever you land on the upper (because you don't have rubber there) you will slip on the court and finish with your body upside down.
Anyway your design has potential, but needs to be developed a little more.

Phil I understand what i've done wrong and I accept critics but not of that kind...that is disrespect for other's work and it's not the first time. Ok i'm tired of this...I see I'm never right. Question about that standard shoe shape. Must every shoe look like that? I ask that to know if i have to make them to integrate in that shape. Look at this pic! Ok bye and see you another time...i'm taking a break from here. |

Barbu: I see from where you are coming from here. You are very passionate about your designs and that is great. That shows you really take time and effort to finish and submit your entry. However, submitting an entry and being chosen as one of the finalists in the Artist Series is a priveledge not everybody enjoys. A number of hopefulls in this month's theme, which didn't make the cut, would really appreciate the heat thrown at their designs from other designers as well. They don't mean to put you down. You don't even have to listen to them if you don't want to. Tough love my friend. Tough love. |

Oh and I also meant to ask, i know you've been asked a million times. Admin, how are the designs being judged? Is it more conceptual designs or something for production? Does one person choose the finalists? I dont really mind if the selection process is subjective, random or according to criteria. I just want to know. Thanks! |

Barbu..
Before you get offended just understand in some respects you are right. Not all shoes need to come from the same template. In fact some shoes are more fashion driven rather then performance driven. Before you design a shoe you should certainly know which direction you are going in. If you are going for performance certain things need to be established. Thats where that template comes in.
One major thing that you are overlooking is that shoes are made over lasts, not bare feet. So to compare a foot illustration to shoe periphery is irrelevant. I don't think that particular template needs to be followed exactly. However it does create basic guidelines for proper proportioning anitomically. For example, if you notice your midsole/outsole has a severe undercut in the heel. This is an area that needs a proper amount of rubber and cushion for heel strike. Also your heel height is high for a lowcut which could be fine if you created an achilles notch.
One more word of advise. A lot of people in the footwear industry read and post on this message board. There points are from experience in the field you aspire to. |

Barbu...
this web site is a golden mine for all non-pros in the scope of becoming pro, and for the pros in the scope of rejuvenating their footwear approach thank you all.
second it is all about the attitude:
Getting criticisms and working over, admiting how ever hard the words are that we always need to improve our skills.
KG can be a game as it can be a serious bridge to a job.
now speaking about footwear, YES your proportions are your weakness and yes 3D wont solve or hide this weakness.
The best service you can give to yourself consist to go back to your basic proportions, and work that aspect hard, by hand first, understand different kind of proportions for different sports (for instance from track and field to mountain hiking....believe me there are huge differences....)
So far your shoe proportions are closer to high mountain hiking.
After 10 years of experience, I am still questioning my footwear proportions and volume, and guess why??
because silhouette is the second aspect of a product you perceive once you look at it(the color or color block comes first)
I think you are passionate and mature enough to step down from anger and step forward with beautiful and functional ideas in the close future...your call |
