Tony, I had done many shoes that only had one thing in common, the puma identity somehow. Nike owns basketball so I thought to do some basketball shoes for Puma that would push the rules of the norm. It is low for basketball but would assist in running, pivoting and especially looking good on court. This new rendering is taller bball like, which is in the first stages of it's rendering life.

I think the transformation is credited to converse being under the wing of nike... or so I think I did read and understand right an article I read somewhere... but I think I do agree in a way that Converse is still yet to establish an image/signature in the performance shoe category... archie...unfortunately, i'm not good enough to give you rendering tips or for sketches, but the instep looks a little funky on the color rendering. seems like the ankle should be pulled forward a bit. the colorway isn't bad, considering they tend to release lebrons in a super-limited "dunkman" colorway. just my two pennies... |

Johnny,
Your improvement is amazing, great work! I really like both of the designs you posted most recently. One thing I would comment on is the messy backgrounds(the black boxes. They are a little distracting. Maybe next time try to tie that shape or background into the shoe a little more. Maybe its a complementary color or a simplified line similar to one on the shoe. Keep it up! |

Kelvin: Your perspective and rendering ability look very good from what you've posted, and your idea for the cushioning system looks interesting as well. The top and bottom views do look a little bit out of proportion. It's a bit difficult to judge from the photograph, though. It would help if you could get a hold of a scanner or take a clearer photo. |

Matt i too am new here, do not be distracted with all the bells and whistles yet. Perfect the approach you take with the concept. I like to think of it as shadow boxing. Try to let the shoe design battle on its own terms. Let itself guide you. Not to sound too metaphysical about it, Let the lines do the work for you. Your eye will tell you what works best! |

Adam, you have some decent ideas, but your proportion is off on ALL of your sketches. This is common, so don't get discouraged, and don't feel like using a template or tracing over a photo of a real shoe is bad. I still do it occasionally just to take the guesswork out. I have some slightly more technical templates I prefer to use (I design more running shoes than basketball), but this is an ideal one that's been posted here lots of times before. Print it out and put it to good use...

Stephen, yes, that's a design I did for Athletic Works before I left Walmart. It was sampled but never bought, because it was a little too pricey to produce at the needed price. So it did not and will not reach retail. I'd do the toe differently if I had a chance to rework it, but I still like the rest of the shoe, especially the colorblocking options it offers (bottom left).

Thanks for the proportion help. I do agree with the heel to ankle angle. Except in aggressive skates the upward slope of the toe is inside the boot. The lift occurs with the internal sub-boot and with the inner liner, there are many after-market liners with varying lift. Also the soul-plates are more symmetrical, the backslide plate groove is located towards the front of the arch of the foot. Thanks for the insight though! |

Not feelin' those diamond cutouts on the CB4, Titus. In the 3 ideas above, I see a premature amount of attention to Illustrator/Photoshop renderings. Sketch, sketch, sketch, dude! Work on proportion first, then work on killer ideas thrown down a lot quicker; each idea feeding into another. Get into a flow. You want to end up with a page full of quickly drawn ideas representing an evolution. Build... add to, take away, create! |
Titus Ares (101 )

thanks, ryan. yeah, aesthetically, the diamond vent cuts just don't fit, you're right. i should be more meticulous with every detail and shape that goes into the shoe and make sure it all flows well.
i did it more just so i would have something to work with on illustrator and then PS. can i get a professional opinion on the rendering and linework aspect of the design? i mean, if you right click a pic, and copy/paste the url found in 'properties', you get a better res image. going from that, what do i need to improve on? i mean, be brutal, because it's the only way i can get better. otherwise, i'll just keep thinking i'm on the right track when i could be going in an entirely opposite and wrong direction.
thanks for any insight and guidance you can provide, ryan. i appreciate folks in the industry that are always willing to teach and give advice. |

Yeah dude, I saw them..and I like the streamlined simplicity of it. Avar did an awesome job with the form. It's like the huarche 2k4 all over again. I mean, it's simple but the lines flow so well and the form is just nice to look at. My only gripe is that is doesn't exude Kobe-ness. I mean, it's a sig shoe, but I don't see Kobe's personality or lifestyle in it. When MJ came out with a shoe, you would get this feeling of deja vu because they always drew inspiration from something MJ was feeling or into at that point in time. I mean, tinker didn't beat you over the head with obvious allusions to a Ferrari or spit fire, but it was there, like a word on the tip of your tongue that you couldn't get out. Kobe's line has none of that...just technology and fabrics/patterns and his logo, but nothing that screams "this shoe is for Kobe!".
The low cut was a ballsy move too, but it's been done with the AJ 3 and zoom bb trash talk already. |

Titus, I was not aware you are as skilled with pencil/pen/marker as you are. Those sketches are very nice. So I take back some of what I said yesterday. I same "some" because you can never exploration-sketch too much, in my opinion. As far as computer rendering skills go, you seem well on your way. You appear to have a good general grasp of all the skills needed. You just need to keep working with what you already know, and sharpen up. |

Yes, I agree. Did Eric Avar design it? I wasn't aware of that. Well I guess the flywire still has its limitations in relation to design flexibility. It's a good flywire shoe, I'm seeing a flywire+battlegrounds uptempo shoe. |

yeah, flywire and lunar foam are looking like the new technology for indoor shoes. not so sure about the durability of either material for outdoor balling though, but then again, who's brave (and rich) enough to actually ball in $125+ basketball shoes outdoors? |

Hey RYAN HOLLER. this is how a skate is built! Each part of the liner is a reflaction of the SKATER. Now if you could check out Aggressivemall.com or Revolution.com, these will make the process more relivent. If not! ^^^ i learned so much from this site. everyone is helpful. check out the post, try and imitate the steps on a silhouette of a shoe, and keep at it until your shoe gets form and shape. do that first, and when you feel like you've got the shading down, THEN throw on some colors. |

here's an example...
colors are cool, but don't work on them too much because you need to define all the shapes, curves, nooks and crannies of the shoe with shading and such. otherwise it looks really flat.

here's the same shoe after working on the little details like highlights and shading.
it helps if you know what you're making...i mean, you don't need to know everything about your shoe, but you should know what material it's made of so you can draw it accordingly. 1-piece uppers are usually relegated to materials like foamposite, while leather and suede are combined from panels and parts.
but the most important thing is learn how to shade your stuff properly. it gives it that volume that makes things pop off the page.
there are tons of cats way more talented than me that are on this board, but this is how i go through the process.

i think i like the sketches better than the actual render right now...can i get a better pic of the sketches?
some parts of the shoe (the strap) look flat, whereas some parts (the red panels), have a definitive lightsource, which looks like it was done with one of the preset PS tools. while it looks nice, it implies that those panels are pointy.
i would suggest checking out core77, the footwear scetion. they have a thread called 'sketch-fu'. there are some awesome demos and tutorials there for you if you want to get better at PS. |

When I start to draw any shoe now a days, I always start with blue pencil. It helps me to plan and build many options before deciding what connections look best. This concept is an idea for having magnets replace laces.

Chris, as I looked at this design a couple more times today, a couple issues kept jumping out at me.
First, the piece of the midsole that wraps up around the forefoot really interrupts the flex area of the shoe. The result would likely be separation from the upper or some ugly creasing (probably both). Forgive me fore drawing over your design, but it's just a suggestion. I admit it kills the cool organic quality of your midsole, but it could also make the shoe look a little faster/meaner. Of course there are more subtle changes that could solve your problem, but I figured I'd just go for it.
Also, notice the length of your vented gills (especially the lowest two) don't leave much material on each side to actually hold the shroud down. Perhaps if your gave all 4 of them a quarter turn and had them splay outward as they go up, it might look pretty cool, without compromising the strength.

Thanks Ryan! I really appreciate you taking the time to look at my design and sketch over it.
R.Kuchinsky made the same observation with the flex issues, and I had posted this quick revision sketch on Core...very similar to what you have sketched. I'm gonna make the adjustments to the gills too, and post the new render later tonight.

I dont think its that out of the ordinary to use a mouse when rendering on the computer. I use to do it all the time. I know T.Hardman uses a mouse only. I only switched to a tablet when Mr. Holler suggested I start using one as its quicker to use in most cases. |

This concept is rendered in under 20 layers. So far, the last ten shoes that i've drawn have an other than ordinary sole spplication. I started and will continue for the rest of my life to draw the foot first, then draw the ground line, then put a shoe on the foot. It helps me to know where the bones are and areas to be under tension. I'll be posting more soon since I really enjoy designing shoes.

For this one I decided to show how I go from blue pencil to mechanical pencil. Then the gray markers come out to make some decisions on what the lines are telling me. And then it is scanned of course and openned in Photoshop. About 28 layers later and I decide to stop. Yes, I could go on with much more shading. To find out if it's rendered correctly you must step back away from your computer screen about 8 to 10 ft. and see it if makes sense or does it look flat. This one is inspired by Hummel soccer shoes co.

This next concept is similar to the other but slightly different since it was done on a Wacom tablet. Again I must say that there is much more to do on both designs but this stage is far enough for me to understand the entire direction. Putting the color pallette's together is a tough job in itself. I usually take notes from new fashion on what color combinations are modern and hot!

Nice work on that design Nick. Clearly you put a lot of thought into this one. I still feel a little confused with how functional this design would be. The heel is typically a main strike area during a stride and depending on how the foot lands on a certain surface it could really hurt an ankle. I think that that form for a prosthetic is very different because you don't have to worry about the ankle. Overall I think this is well presented and thought out. I like how you give room for the toe to move as well. Nice job |
