people. use underlays. its not cheating, but your proportions will be correct. |

Amen Nick!
I totally used to think it was cheating but then I realized it was quite a bit easier and I didn't have to worry about messing up the shape. |

Yeah, I totally see what is going on. I have simply went back to sketching the human foot, instead of this awkward stylizing of the human foot and in the process familiarize myself again with the subtle shapes of the foot and how it works. |

What do you guys mean by underlays? I can shade elements of the shoe using the dodge and burn tools without much trouble but i have issues with making the overall shape "pop" sometimes. I'm not sure if underlays have anything to do with that but I'll take any help I can get |

Jason -- An underlay is a layer of material which lays under another layer in shoe construction. BUT, what Nick is referring to, in his March 23rd comment, is a template. It can be an outline guide in the shape of a shoe or a photo of an actual shoe. It helps you to get your proportions correct. Here's one that has been passed around for years, originally provided by Jason Mayden, from Jordan Brand. I've used it several times. Download it and print it whatever size you want to work.
There are also some good ones at http://michaelditullo.com. Go there and click on TUTORIALS and then PROPORTIONS.
Lastly, if you'd like to use actual shoe photos, I recommend images from www.holabirdsports.com. They take their product photos from outsole plane level, which is perfect for use as a template. They also photograph their high-end basketball shoes from about every angle you'd want. Check out the LeBrons when you get there. |

Okay thank's a lot! I've actually been using that template along with the ones provided on futuresole for all my renderings. I thought maybe they were referring to some shaded template of a shoe somewhere that gave the shoe its basic shape that you could just put a layer style on in photoshop or something.
And thanks for that website. I've actually been looking for one like that so I could get a better concept on the shapes from different angle. That'll be great! |

Looking for thoughts... I tried to bring in the elaphant look with the tusk design. I also wanted the shoe to seem big and powerful.
Some materials/colors:
elaphant print
varnished leather
translucent sole
white leather
red/black stiching

not sure if it would turn out too cheesy, but it looks like you could use a little ankle support, and the form and texture of the elephant's trunk could work. like a band or strap up top. just a thought. |

Not bad John. I can see that you traced Sindri's Air Zoom JP as a base for your shoe. But I suggest you try to further the sketch more so it doesn't resemble Sindri's design. Cuz as of now, that toe and the tall tongue is very similar. So keep furthering and maybe you'll find something cool and new come out of it.

yeah Sal, i assume you draw manually, you could use templates off the internet, or even maybe pictures from magazines, place paper over it, then familiarize your hand with the general shape of the shoe, you don't have to get it right all the time though, good luck! keep us posted about your sketches. |

Archie your designs are great. Clean them up and enter them in a contest already:) I'm working on a smooth sleek looking shoe, what if for a strap i used magnets would that work? I feel that velcro may take away from its design. |

@John
Hahaha.. thanks, I have submitted some here, well, I have yet to be a finalist, that's the problem, I can doodle, but loose interest in a design quickly, too quick to clean it up, either that or I move on to do something else ... Thanks John!... Magnets? Didn't a Jordan have magnets? I'm lost for what edition it is. In my opinion, the problems I see is primarily the tensile resistance, as quick as they can fasten, it is also as quick as they can get loose. I suggest having a number of magnets placed in opposing faces/ different axes in the different faces of the shoe to counteract the tension, also consider the shape of the magnets in relation to where the shoe bends in natural movement, folds in the upper material could loosen the magnets, just my two cents... if you ask between velco and magnets, i'll go with velcro, simpler and i guess cheaper, but you're doing a concept shoe, so go with whatever you like :D good luck! |

John: Those straps are way too small. They wouldnt be able to take a lot of the stress that would be put on them. It would only cause the strap to either break or continuosly come loose from the velcro.
Also a brief description of what your intending to do would be good so that we know what your trying to do from either a material or a technological stand point.

@Johnny
I used to draw designs manually with pencil and paper, then scan, then color the rendering on PS. Now I do it all on the computer. I got myself a pentablet (saved up a long time and its well worth it). I draw shoes on Corel Painter then quick rendering with the airbrush. You could also do it on PS but I like the option of other coloring mediums on Painter. I can't seem to find a copy of Sketchbook here, so I got Painter instead, does the job well. I hope I answered your question. |

@ john
the general shape of the shoe looks... fragmented, for a lack of the word. The overall massing looks bulky and ununified, predominantly on the achiles/heel side. I suggest you view works from other designers, try to study the lines and strokes of their designs. Rendering wise, I can assume that you invested quite an amount of time and judging from your other works, you definetly improved! Add a little toning and shading and your work will surely pop-out. Hope this helps! See you around! |
