I dont think its that out of the ordinary to use a mouse when rendering on the computer. I use to do it all the time. I know T.Hardman uses a mouse only. I only switched to a tablet when Mr. Holler suggested I start using one as its quicker to use in most cases. |

This concept is rendered in under 20 layers. So far, the last ten shoes that i've drawn have an other than ordinary sole spplication. I started and will continue for the rest of my life to draw the foot first, then draw the ground line, then put a shoe on the foot. It helps me to know where the bones are and areas to be under tension. I'll be posting more soon since I really enjoy designing shoes.

For this one I decided to show how I go from blue pencil to mechanical pencil. Then the gray markers come out to make some decisions on what the lines are telling me. And then it is scanned of course and openned in Photoshop. About 28 layers later and I decide to stop. Yes, I could go on with much more shading. To find out if it's rendered correctly you must step back away from your computer screen about 8 to 10 ft. and see it if makes sense or does it look flat. This one is inspired by Hummel soccer shoes co.

This next concept is similar to the other but slightly different since it was done on a Wacom tablet. Again I must say that there is much more to do on both designs but this stage is far enough for me to understand the entire direction. Putting the color pallette's together is a tough job in itself. I usually take notes from new fashion on what color combinations are modern and hot!

Nice work on that design Nick. Clearly you put a lot of thought into this one. I still feel a little confused with how functional this design would be. The heel is typically a main strike area during a stride and depending on how the foot lands on a certain surface it could really hurt an ankle. I think that that form for a prosthetic is very different because you don't have to worry about the ankle. Overall I think this is well presented and thought out. I like how you give room for the toe to move as well. Nice job |
Nick Huber (154 )
Artist Info
| 3:37:00 PM Monday, March 09, 2009
John: I have to say im a bit confused about what you mean in regards to the ankle. the carbon fiber acts like a spring so it first absorbs the impact then it returns the energy making for a quicker and more energy efficient stride. We think of carbon fiber as being a super stiff material but the reality is it has give and can function as a spring.

Hmmmm... Well Nick I thought about it some more and it is starting to seem more clear now that you explained it. I guess I thought that you couldn't take the prosthetic and make it into two surface areas without affecting stability. Still some nice work. |
Gabriel Smith (24)

Interesting concept Nick H. There are alot of issues that you still haven't quite figured out. From your 3/4 view, you decided to allow one carbon fiber piece to go through the other. There are clearance issues which would cause a rubbing noise if you were running and turned at any stride and a click noise from the release of the shoe from the ground. I also have seen and own enough shoes to tell that you derived your design (midshoe - toe) from the Nike 180 Air max. Not sure what year in the 90's but the pair I have are in Orange and Blue. You are on the right track but a shoe design in this revolutionary direction deserves alot more thought. Thanks for displaying, thats what the sketch workshop is all about. |

This last shoe took me one day of modeling, one day for texturing and 3 days for rendering...but after months and month of practice and understanding of 3ds max. No tutorial will teach you faster than another human. I've been lucky to spend campus time with people that already had knowlege of 3ds max. It takes patience, nerves of steel and logic. |

Please. Yes, you do want to know 3d programs, but in the time it takes to do one complete shoe. You can render 50 by hand. Practicing shadows and highlights are very important. Sometimes I put a pair of shoes under lights to reproduce what shadowed look I'm going for. |

This is something I haven't done in awhile. I miss it a lot and I miss the competitions a lot.
This concept revolves around the idea of a "free" basketball shoe. Somewhere along the lines of a 10.0, with certain outsole cuts that give the shoe flexibility but not too much that there is limited stability. It would feature a nike free inspired midsole and outsole, padded ankle upper, and more once I start to render the textures and materials used by Nike.
Please let me know what you think, respects to you all, keep up the awesome work |

Colin, I see 2 potential problems. The last image you posted was a GIF. Stick with JPEG, and make sure it's RGB color format. But the first 2 images you tried to post, both JPEGs, had spaces in the file name. Don't do that. Remove the spaces or replace them with dashes or underscores. For instance, these options are okay...
filename3.jpg

This option is not...
