| 2005 Artist Series Contest (March): FreeStyle - All Star Inspired Okay, so the All-Star Weekend in Denver has just ended. Most thought it was quite mild, especially compared to the hoopla from last year's event at LA. In March, we are having a freestyle competition that is All-Star inspired. That could mean the usual red white or blue or the 3 pt contest, slam dunk contest, or any superstars... It's a Freestyle, you design it, however you want to! Due Date: 3/20/05 |

I love to design basketball shoes but i've got nothing more than my pencil and paper. I know that most, if not all the shoes in the artist series competition have been designed with the help of some sorta computer program. what is this software that you guys are using. And where can i get it. thanks! |

Is it possible to get a little heads up on what the theme will be for next month since I have a deadline for my assignment and I would REALLY, REALLY, REALLLY like to bang out a good design. I' extremely appreciate any help in can gimme on this, Kg! |
| Tony Hardman Moderator Artist Info Reply | 10:00:00 PM Tuesday, April 12, 2005 Look, if the submissions WERE judged on these criteria, it would only help to strengthen the skillset of everybody participating, by making you all more well-balanced designers/thinkers/artists. Just my 2... |
| Jimmy Washington (135 Reply | 2:29:00 PM Tuesday, April 12, 2005 Amen ADE!!! Let's all not get things twisted. This is another avenue in which all of our work can be viewed by the world. Believe me,...I'm not doing this for my health. I wish to be a shoe designer someday. I would say the majority of us here hope & pray our work is being viewed by major shoe companies & designers. We're all individuals, which means we all have opinions. I wouldn't have a pulse if I agreed about everything in this world. I also second guess some monthly selections, but that's just my opinion....that's all. It's no strike against the KG staff. It's just like selection Sunday in the NCAA Basketball Tourbey. 65 teams get in, but we all belly-ache about the teams that were left out. That's the nature of the beast, so we have to live with it. I'll just go back to the drawing board & perfect my skills....that's all I can do. |
| ade otabor (411 Artist Info Reply | 12:55:00 AM Tuesday, April 12, 2005 yes this is a fan site, but i am not asking that submissions should be judged against professional guidelines but even amatuer competitions have these types of criteria. one does not have to be a designer to critique in this manner. i would be lying if i said i did not care about being recognized but that said that is not why i participate here. i think it is great what kg is doing for designers here, providing a forum for people to showcase and track their progress of work, we already know there are people in the professional industry taking note of what is going on in this forum, so yes i enjoy the opportunity that this provides. not trying start any trouble, just trying to provoke some thought about the matter with some suggestions |
| ismael lafarge (4) Reply | 9:37:00 PM Monday, April 11, 2005 ade, i'm agree whit your idea of how the works should be judged. but this is a sneaker fan site, not a pro-design site, i don't know if somebody at KG work as a pro-designer. so, i think that your idea it's not applicable here. this discucion it's puttin' harder whitout reason through the months. it's my opinion ( and just that) that we'll be enjoy the opportunity that KG give us month to month to let fly our imagination. i know that this is the dream of all of us get the final cut, it's a great show window, but i think that we should take the things a little bit calm, and work everyday for our dream that is design kicks at the pro level. personally i never send a sudmision becouse i don't finish my work before the deadline, but ervery moth i start again and try to give my best effort to make it. and i think that the time that KG gives to the develop of the month theme it's correct. much respect to all. p.s.: sorry for my "to much academic" english:) |
| ade otabor (411 Artist Info Reply | 1:26:00 PM Monday, April 11, 2005 sorry if i misunderstood, yes when all other aspects are equal past work could become a consideration but i hope it is one of many other considerations. i do not envy the staff on this board who have to choose out of the 80+ submissions, it is no easy task and there will always be those that feel they should have been chosen. but i also think there should be some consitency on how and what we designers are judged on, like one of the 1st things is 1) craft---how well and complete the actual rendering is done---and being honest i have to say that we are getting away with bad craft, sloppy renders with ill added photoshop shapes over them. 2)originality---how innovative or fresh is the idea--this is much more subjective but that is one of the things i love what goes on here, every month i see more than one dope concept so no qualms there 3)illustrating the concept---by this i mean showing how this design works/would work, i this is important because it lets people know you that you have done more than drawn a pretty picture, you have given actual consideration to how this thing could work. now i realize these are shoes and some things are a given but when you propose a new solution words are not enough, you have to show it. 4)presentation---how the design is displayed---pretty self explanatory i think, this can sometimes make or break a design but this is secondary to the actual design. if there was some criteria that could be agreed upon i think there would be less of a slighty feeling among people. much respect to all participants. oNE. |
| KG Admin Artist Info Reply | 2:55:00 AM Monday, April 11, 2005 Never had it mentioned that work is chosen based on improvement. But rather, improvement can get you to a level that will allow you to make the cut. Also, past work DOES make a difference in who's chosen because their work will get more votes when staff's evaluating (assuming everything else is equal). Consistency pays off here. Those who constantly pump out quality work will get rewarded, regardless whether you like it or not. |
| Jimmy Washington (135 Reply | 9:54:00 PM Sunday, April 10, 2005 Good points Ade. Spoken like a real pro! |
| Brian Moughty (378 Reply | 8:52:00 PM Sunday, April 10, 2005 ^ Good post..I agree.. Basically I think whoever submitted it shouldn't matter, and there work in the past shouldn't matter....All that matters is that the top designs should make it...not looking at the names who submitted it and the past....flat out the top designs of the month.... |
| ade otabor (411 Artist Info Reply | 6:29:00 PM Sunday, April 10, 2005 looks like i missed a good discussion, just to throw my 2 cents in: i think there is much to be appreciated & respected for those designers who show increasing improvement in these monthly competitions, it shows that they put in the & time to increase their skill set...but i do not see why improvement should/would beat consistency i seriously doubt that some of these finalists entries look better than what zenith submitted.(no i have not seen his entry this month but knowing the quality of work he has continously put out, i find it hard to believe that he could not make this cut) i look at it like this---someone could improve 10000%---and i will give mad props for that but that does mean i will overlook better work. i am not trying to degrade anyone's efforts (because my stuff need ALOT of work) but improvement does not necessarily equal good work. i do not think people are here to get e-props, i believe people are here because they love designing shoes and want to improve and share our ideas about footwear. |
| Jimmy Washington (135 Reply | 12:31:00 AM Sunday, April 10, 2005 I appreciate all of the explinations. I just thought the timing of Brian's post & KG's post was interesting. I dig everyone's prespective when designing shoes. That's what makes this site great. Everyone has submits interesting shoes & I couldn't imagine what KG goes throught when selecting finalist every month. I will continue to submit my renderings when time premits & give props to those who make the cut. |
| KG Admin Artist Info Reply | 12:07:00 PM Saturday, April 09, 2005 No problem Brian. Just to let you know, most of the Finalists you see took many months before making the cut. They continued to improve in the beginning despite not making it. If you could see the amount of submissions we see, you'd be amazed at how some of the designers have improved in the past year. While it's great to have air time and be recognized for your hard work, those that have done it with consistency & improvement over many themes will obviously have a slight priority over those that are not. Speaking of which, the current top ranked artist Zenith Chance barely missed the cut list this month... so even the best of them may not get on. |
| KG Admin Artist Info Reply | 11:59:00 AM Saturday, April 09, 2005 P.S. there will always be those that will miss the cut every month that 'could' or 'should' be deserving. We can only pick the best ones that we can. If everyone makes it, it'd diminish the Finalist appearance of those that really deserved to make it. Also, keep in mind that there are also of those that didn't follow the guidelines established for submission or meet the deadline. Finally, there are also those that cheat, inflate votes, and other rule infractions that we know about that you do not. In another words, we filter out the messy parts so that the readers will have a better web site experience. We definitely appreciate your concern and opinion, but there's more than meets the eye behind the scenes =) |
| Brian Moughty (378 Reply | 11:56:00 AM Saturday, April 09, 2005 ^ KG I dont mind that you put mine up, I probably would have anyways...Thanks Jimmy- Everyone has their opinions, and I just felt like I couls have made it over some..I didn't mention names or anything...you said it yourself you question some of them... |
| KG Admin Artist Info Reply | 11:53:00 AM Saturday, April 09, 2005 On the contrary, we are not putting down ANYONE's work. In fact, we have ALWAYS posted entries that didn't make the final cut in the past in the chat section. Jimmy, if you would look at last year's Artist Series, you'll see that we put up ALOT of work in the chat when requested or barely missed. Also, we did not just put up Brian's but Tony's as well, we simply edited his post so that the picture will show up (it wasn't before). The only issue with putting up renderings that don't make the Final cut in the chat is that we'd end up doing that for everyone which is way too much (on avg, over 80 submissions a month). The reason we put it up is because we thought it was quite good. Again, if you look at past chats, we've put up honorable mentions, those that barely missed the cut...etc. Not sure where your hostility is coming from. |
| krydo design (69 Artist Info Reply | 9:51:00 AM Saturday, April 09, 2005 My appologies, Eric. I just scanned the comments and posted. It was Brian who questioned the judges and those who had made the finals. Mea Culpa; but not a big deal either way...I wasn't mad, I just think his comment may not be the wisest way of handling the issue. But, once again, I was errant. |

| Jimmy Washington (135 Reply | 10:58:00 PM Friday, April 08, 2005 Seems like the admins are calling out Brian. If possible, I would like to know why an admin. would post Brian's entry here in the chat section? I can't speak for anyone else, but I also question some entries from time to time. That doesn't mean I should put down those who were selected. I simply don't think it's professinal to lash back in this manner. Brian, you shouldn't shoot down the work by those who made the cut. This is KICKSGUIDE & the employees make the final decision on who makes the finals every month. We should show love to those who's work is posted. |
| krydo design (69 Artist Info Reply | 4:31:00 PM Friday, April 08, 2005 Tony- Nice looking concept. Eric, I don't know if it's the best idea to start putting down both the administrators and the other finalists. I'm not saying that you did or didn't deserve to make the finals...but then again, I'm not the one who makes that decision. Regarding your request, I don't think it'd be all bad if the KG admin made the theme one month only hand-drawn submissions...but until they do, I don't think most will leave their computer out of the process...afterall, we're interacting on a digital medium. |
