Artist Series Contest (September): Air Jordan XX Mock
Thanks to Sneakerhead NL, we have now seen the early sample version of the Air Jordan XX. The laser etched designs and straps at the ankle are bound to stir emotions among sneaker ethusiasts. Whether you like the new design or not, this is your chance to create YOUR version of the shoe. What would you have done if Nike handed you the pen to come up with the Air Jordan XX?

Hey Dwayne, out of curiousity, who did you vote for, and if you did vote, why did you choose their design? I think you mentioned De Castro's design before but not sure. Also, congrats to De Castro. Nice work man; keep it up!

thanks dwayne, really appreciate that. like i said i've got a sketch book to record all the madness inside my head but wasn't sure how to present some of the more finished articles I have hand drawn. Will try out the board size you suggested. Also thanks for the tip on drawing size, I knew I was probably drawing too small but avoided the issue. No excuses now though, thanks again chief.

Whaddup KG, I'm fresh outta college with a degrees in illustration and design and I've been trying to get into the sneaker design game ever since. I tried to bag up internships with all the big dogs with no avail. While looking for other ways to get my work out there, I just stumbled upon this awesome site. I think it's a really great thing to know that there are indeed many, many more people like me who have all had the dream to design kicks for a living. Anyway, I know that it's too late for this month's design, but I was wondering how I can post my designs on here. I'd love to get all your feedbacks. If there's anyway sombody can help me out, it would be GREATLY appreciated. PEACE.

Jake: Geez I don't really know cos I finished up school 4 years ago... Have things changed? And which part of Australia are you from? I'm from Adelaide so... I don't know how your system works, that is, if you're from another state. But have a keen eye on detail, knowledge of materials... start drawing!! Sketch WHENEVER you can.. don't listen to the teachers and sketch during lectures classes etc. ( not to the extent of flunking buddy... ) Um start developing your own individual style cos that'll help. As far as getting in... I actually applied for Monash years ago. They required you to show up with a portfolio of your work but I couldn't make it... I was in the Singapore army. Fantastic fun that ;P Try and build up some accolades in your art studies. Wish I could be more help Jake.

Eric: i think it is just evolution, as new techniques emerge the old ones get pushed aside a little bit. if you can believe this, the old--old school guys thought that markers where bad because people were losing the art of rendering with watercolors & traditional painting methods. then add that to the trend that companies seem to be placing importance of 3-d modeling, and people change their skillset. DE, it is good to see you posting again, one thing i would love to see i am pretty sure others would like to as well, is the renderings of released shoe models. do you think you could show us more like those 18.5s below?

Hey Dwayne you're a champ thanks for all the positive comments! I'm sure you've helped and inspired many a designer on this board. I know this might seem delayed but, I gotta agree with you when you say hand drawn renderings are a lost art. If you can put forward an idea with sketches instead of a computer-aided rendering, then why not? I'm currently in an ID course in Australia and the stress is on being able to deliver quick (stress on QUICK), clean, and precise sketches. I know the public votes for the winner on this comp, and therefore I think that somehow the better presented a design=higher votes. It seems cosmetic, and I'm not taking anything away from anyone cos you're all great, but if a person has drawing skills to flex, where is the credit that comes with it? Ah well. My Shaq concept ( if selected) is gonna be Photoshopped slightly. Yes, I've buckled under the public's power.

jimi: I am not exactly sure what you are asking me but here are somethings to think about. 1.When designing a shoe you should consider drawing it at 11 to 11.5 inches long. The reason why is that all shoes are sampled up in size 9 and if you measure a size 9 shoe it is about 11 to 11.5 inches long and this will give you a better idea of how your shoe will look in actual size. 2.To continue with my first point when you are designing a shoe in actual size PLEASE put a shoe in front of you so you can study all of the little details like the shape of the shoe down to how the stitching is applied. Most of the people who post don't pay attention to the details of making a drawing come to life. 3.When we present shoes at Nike we post them on black 11 x 17 or slightly larger presentation boards that you can find at your local art store and the sketches are in actual size of a size 9 shoe. Hope this helps... D

dwayne One thing that I have been wandering since I started getting involved with the artist series, is how would you expect to see work presented in the physical world? I create these designs using markers and scan them in to send for the comp but then I'm not sure what the best way to display the physical drawings is. Is it a case of mounting them on an a1 sheet / board? If you have the time to answer this query I would be really appreciated. Also must say how much I love zens work, your tmac is still my favourite but the level of effort you put in is so admirable and the quality of your overall presentation, from sketches to final design, is something I aspire to.

Man, I hope EVERYONE is looking at how Zenith gets down. I am REALLY impressed Z. For all of you out there trying to become a footwear Designer pay attention to how Zenith gets down. All of that he posted is about the same amount of work that go's into every JORDAN and Nike shoe. Zenith has done a great job of tell you the story of how he gave birth to his shoe. A+ on that Z. I am sorry I have been gone for a while, I have been working really hard on trying to finish the AJXX1. If you thought Zenith put in a lot of work on his shoe when I am finally finished with the AJXX1 it will be 10 times more work than that or more but all you guys see is the final result. Trust me when I say there is a lot of work that go's into designing and finishing a shoe. For example me and my team just put in 28 hours straight to get designs done! Yes, 28 hours! It takes time and dedication and I can tell a few and I only mean a few of you have it and Zenith you are one of them. I got your info. and I will contact you to answer any more questions you may have. Good Job! D

Wow! Nice work Zenith! Very cool progress. But I got to say, I don't feel the Air Jordan mystique in them. Nice rendering and good sketch studies but I just don't see Air Jordan. However, I see it more as a really cool Michael Vick signature shoe. It looks heavy on the layers and the bottom 3/4 back pers. rendering needs perspective tweaking. I'm diggin those exploded views though, that was sweet! Think "Less is More, unless More IS More." PIETRO: Somebody better hire this guy! You've got some mad passion with the skills to backit up! Good luck to you, man!

Bravo!!! ### I post a couple of quick sketches I did today to escape from Shaqs obsession...It's a concept for Air Jordan XXSE, starting from the original pics ### Ciaooooo
